  Martin was claimed off waivers by the Brewers and was assigned to Triple-A Nashville on Sunday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Martin was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks last week and will now make his way to the Brewers. The right-hander made just two appearances at Triple-A Reno prior to being DFA'd, and he allowed three runs on three hits and three walks over three innings.

• Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: Dropped from 40-man roster

  Arizona designated Martin for assignment Sunday. The Diamondbacks selected infielder Kevin Newman's contract from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move, with Arizona making room for him on the 26-man active roster by placing shortstop Geraldo Perdomo (knee) on the 15-day injured list. Once one of the more prized young arms in Arizona's organization, Martin is now 28 years old and hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2022. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 and required another major operation last spring, when he had a procedure to address a right lat tendon avulsion. Martin ended up missing the entire 2023 season, and though he's been healthy to begin the 2024 campaign, he's been lit up for three earned runs on three hits and three walks over three innings between his first two relief appearances at Triple-A Reno.

As Jackson notes, this will cause Martin to miss months and not weeks while he recovers from the injury, and surgery cannot be ruled out at this time. The right-hander was diagnosed with shoulder soreness initially, but imaging revealed the tear. He'll begin the season on the IL, and likely won't be able to help the Diamondbacks until sometime this summer, at the very earliest.

  Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Martin is experiencing discomfort in his right shoulder and will undergo further testing Thursday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Martin fell to his knees in pain immediately after throwing a pitch in the fourth inning of Wednesday's game against the Brewers. It was originally speculated to be an arm/elbow injury for the 27-year-old righty, but a shoulder issue is now confirmed. A better idea of how long Martin may be out for should be gleaned from his test results.

Martin, who topped out at 97 mph Thursday, has been impressive early in camp, fueling hope the Diamondbacks can salvage something from the pitcher that was seen as the centerpiece of the Zack Greinke trade four years ago. When the right-hander was acquired along with three other players from Houston in 2019, Martin was a starter coming off Tommy John elbow surgery. Subsequent injuries delayed his Arizona debut until 2021. He has had middling results in both the minors and majors since then, but he's embracing the bullpen role, which may be the best thing for his career at this time.

  Martin (0-1) took the loss Saturday versus Atlanta. He allowed four runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in four innings. All of the runs against Martin came via the long ball. He gave up solo shots to Matt Olson and William Contreras as well as a two-run blast also to Contreras. Prior to Saturday, Martin hadn't allowed a homer at the major-league level this year. The poor outing raised his ERA to 4.84 and his WHIP to 1.66 through 22.1 innings. He's added 21 strikeouts and 12 walks in seven appearances (two starts), though his spot in the rotation remains only tenuously in his hands. He should be considered likely to start until Zach Davies (shoulder) or Tyler Gilbert (elbow) can return, which likely means Martin is tentatively set for a home start versus the Rockies next week.

  Martin allowed a run on four hits and five walks with one strikeout in four innings, taking a no-decision in Sunday's loss to the Nationals. Martin made his first big-league start of the season, but he had trouble finding the strike zone. He threw only 36 of 71 pitches for strikes, though he was able to effectively limit the damage with some help from his defense -- the Diamondbacks turned a double play and picked off Victor Robles on a stolen base attempt. Martin has a 3.93 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 15:11 K:BB through 18.1 innings in six outings (one start) with Arizona this year. It's not clear if he'll stick in the rotation going forward, but he lines up for a road start in Atlanta next weekend if he gets another start. Martin likely has a path to remain a starter at least until Zach Davies (shoulder) can return, which isn't expected to be until August at the earliest.

  Martin could be an option to enter the Diamondbacks' rotation after the team designated Dallas Keuchel for assignment Wednesday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. The right-hander has a 5.10 ERA over 12 starts (60 innings) at Triple-A Reno. Martin had been a candidate a month ago for the rotation, but Arizona went with the veteran Keuchel, who eventually logged a 9.64 ERA with 27 hits and seven walks allowed over four starts (18.2 innings). With a decreasing strikeout rate and increasing barrel rate, the Diamondbacks pulled the plug on Keuchel and are expected to look at one of their young hurlers at Reno, including Martin, who was the key piece in the deal that sent Zack Greinke to Houston three years ago. The right-handed Martin has pitched well in back-to-back starts, most recently firing eight shutout innings for the Aces one week ago. The organization may also consider lefty Tommy Henry, who has a 3.55 ERA over 18 starts (96.1 innings) at Reno.

  Martin struck out a career-high 13 batters and walked one over 5.2 innings for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. Martin's posted four excellent outings over his last five starts for the Aces, making a strong case to be considered for the open the Diamondbacks' No. 5 starter job. The right-hander has mixed in a curveball more effectively, Arizona assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "I think the curveball gives him a little bit more separation (from his fastball and slider), a little bit more depth," Sawdaye said. "(Earlier this season), he would throw it every once in a while, but he didn't really want to throw it that much. Clearly, now he's throwing it more and it's giving him a little bit more of a swing-and-miss pitch." The Diamondbacks haven't named any starters yet for this weekend's series against the Tigers, but manager Torey Lovullo plans to use a fifth starter during the set. Martin should be a considered a longshot with Dallas Keuchel the most likely candidate.

Forced to warm up on short notice, Martin walked two and gave up a single to the first three batters faced, and the first two runners eventually scored. The right-hander settled in after that, providing critical relief and allowing Arizona's bats to impact the game. It was the fourth time in five outings that Martin has thrown two innings or more.
