  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Makes Opening Day bullpen

Naughton has been informed he will be a part of the Opening Day roster for the Cardinals, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Naughton was in a battle with several arms for one of the final spots in the bullpen, and he's come out on top. The left-hander had mixed results in the Grapefruit League with a 4.82 ERA and 7:3 K:BB over 9.1 innings, but his ability to go multiple innings as a former starter likely was the determining factor. Naughton is unlikely to pitch in a role that provides much fantasy relevance in 2023.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Mixed results in spring

Naughton has allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings through five Grapefruit League appearances.

Naughton was on and off the Cardinals' major-league roster for much of 2022, posting a 4.78 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 31:7 K:BB across 32 innings. He started three of his six appearances, but his path to staying in the majors this season is in the bullpen since the Cardinals have a surplus of potential starters. Naughton remains unlikely to challenge for a high-leverage role, so he won't be a factor in most fantasy formats.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Makes wild-card roster

Naughton will be on the Cardinals' wild-card roster, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Naughton was sent to the minors Sept. 21, but he'll rejoin the Cardinals ahead of the NL Wild Card Series against the Phillies, which begins Friday. The southpaw held left-handed hitters to a .163 batting average in the majors this year, which factored into the decision to include Naughton on the roster over Genesis Cabrera.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Returns to minors

Naughton was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old was called up by St. Louis on Sept. 10 and allowed one run over four frames during his brief time on the active roster. Naughton was optioned to Memphis but will remain with the big-league club as a member of the taxi squad.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Called up by Cardinals

Naughton was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.

Naughton spent just over two weeks in the minors and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and no walks while striking out four in four innings over three relief appearances following his demotion. However, he'll rejoin the Cardinals' bullpen after James Naile was sent down Saturday.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Sent to Triple-A

Naughton was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Friday.

Naughton has been up with the big-league club since late June, but he'll head back to the minors after recording only one out in each of his past two outings. The 26-year-old has a 5.14 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 28:6 K:BB over 28 innings this season.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Converts first big-league save

Naughton pitched a perfect 11th inning to earn the save in Thursday's 3-2 win over Atlanta.

Naughton was shaky in his previous stints in the majors this year, but he's allowed just one run, two hits and three walks in seven innings across six appearances since his June 24 recall. With the Cardinals exhausting their top high-leverage arms earlier in Thursday's contest, Naughton got the call to protect a one-run lead, and he delivered. He now has a 3.98 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB across 20.1 innings, and he's added a hold and an 0-2 record through 15 appearances (three starts). The southpaw likely won't contend for many high-leverage chances, but he's building up some trust with his recent success.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Back in big leagues

Naughton was recalled by the Cardinals on Friday.

Naughton has already spent four separate stints on the major-league roster. His numbers haven't necessarily justified a permanent stay, as he owns a 5.40 ERA in 13.1 innings of work, though his 1.8 percent walk rate at least demonstrates strong control. He'll replace Drew VerHagen in the bullpen, who hit the injured list with a shoulder issue Friday.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Heads to minors

The Cardinals optioned Naughton to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

Naughton was sent packing to clear a spot on the active roster for Jack Flaherty (shoulder), who was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his season debut Wednesday against the Pirates. After getting called up from Triple-A on May 30, Naughton made three appearances -- two as an opener and one out of the bullpen -- and gave up five earned runs over four innings.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Roughed up by Rays

Naughton (0-2) allowed four earned runs on five hits with no walks or strikeouts across 1.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Rays.

Naughton wasn't stretched out to be a starter, so he wasn't likely to pitch deep into the game even if he was effective. However, that wasn't the case, as he allowed three doubles in the first frame to account for three earned runs. Naughton is likely to get one more turn through the rotation thanks to a doubleheader, though Steven Matz's (shoulder) impending return could cause Naughton's role to shift in the near future. He has primarily served a multi-inning relief role with St. Louis this season and now has a 5.54 ERA with a 12:1 K:BB across 13 innings.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Starting Wednesday

Naughton will start Wednesday's game against the Rays, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

The 26-year-old hasn't pitched since covering 2.1 innings as an opener May 30, but he'll make another start Wednesday in Tampa Bay. Naughton has yet to pitch four frames in any appearance between the majors or minors this season, so he's unlikely to pitch deep enough Wednesday to have a chance at a victory.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Yields one run as opener

Naughton allowed one run on two hits as the opener in Monday's win over the Padres. He struck out four across 2.1 frames.

The 26-year-old southpaw worked through two scoreless frames before he was charged with a run on Jurickson Profar's RBI single off of Andre Pallante in the third. Naughton is sporting a 3.09 ERA with a 12:1 K:BB through 11.2 frames with St. Louis this season. If he gets another turn in the rotation, it would likely be this weekend in a road matchup with the Cubs.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Officially starting Monday

Naughton was called up from Triple-A Memphis and will start Monday's contest versus the Padres, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Naughton will return to the major-leagues to make his second start of the season and seventh appearance overall. He has produced a 2.89 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with eight strikeouts over 9.1 innings with the Cardinals in 2022. With Steven Matz (shoulder) potentially returning soon, Naughton may just make one start before returning to Triple-A, but time will tell.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Joining rotation Monday

The Cardinals plan to call up Naughton from Triple-A Memphis and have him start Monday's game against the Padres in St. Louis, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

St. Louis will have to move a player off the 26-man active roster to clear a spot for Naughton, who is poised to rejoin the big club after a week-and-a-half-long stint in the minors. Between his 13 outings in the majors and at Triple-A this season, Naughton hasn't pitched more than 3.1 innings, so he'll likely have a strict cap on his pitch count Monday. Whether he sticks in the rotation beyond Monday may hinge on the availability of Steven Matz (shoulder), who resumed throwing Sunday and could be ready to return from the 15-day injured list in the first week of June.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Back on farm

The Cardinals optioned Naughton to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

Naughton's stay with the big club lasted just one day after the Cardinals designated him as their 27th man for Tuesday's doubleheader with the Mets. He appeared in relief in the Cardinals' 3-1 loss in Game 1, striking out one batter over 1.2 scoreless innings.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Called up as 27th man

The Cardinals recalled Naughton from Triple-A Memphis and designated him as the 27th man for Tuesday's doubleheader with the Mets, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Naughton won't be in line to start either end of the twin bill, but he'll at least provide a multi-inning option out of the bullpen behind Miles Mikolas and Steven Matz, who take the hill for Games 1 and 2, respectively. The 26-year-old southpaw has made five appearances (one start) for St. Louis in 2022, working 7.2 innings while giving up three earned runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out seven.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Sent down Saturday

Naughton was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.

Naughton made five appearances (one start) during his time on the major-league roster, and he posted a 3.52 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 7.2 innings. The southpaw will head back to the minors after Drew VerHagen (hip) was reinstated from the injured list Saturday.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Struggles in spot start

Naughton (0-1) was tagged with the loss Tuesday after pitching 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out two against the Orioles.

All of the damage against Naughton in this one came in the form of home runs. He gave up a two-run homer to Cedric Mullins in the top of the third inning and then a solo shot to Tyler Nevin in the fourth frame. The earned runs were his first surrendered this season, though he was put in a tough spot, starting on two days' rest. Overall, Naughton has a 4.26 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with four punchouts over 6.1 innings this season. With Adam Wainwright (illness) expected to return soon, the 25-year-old will likely return to his regular bullpen role without making another start.

  • Cardinals' Packy Naughton: Getting spot start Tuesday

Naughton will serve as the Cardinals' starting pitcher in Tuesday's game against the Orioles, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

St. Louis held out hope that Adam Wainwright would be ready to clear COVID-19-related protocols and make his scheduled turn through the rotation Tuesday, but he ultimately wasn't able to do so. As a result, Naughton will move from the bullpen to make the spot start, but don't expect him to work deep into the game. He'll be pitching on two days' rest after facing two hitters in Saturday's game against the Giants, and he hasn't topped three innings in any of his appearances in the majors or at Triple-A Memphis this season.
