Player Outlook
Alika Williams was drafted 37th overall by the Rays in the 2020 draft, primarily on the basis of his athleticism and slick fielding. He progressed fairly quickly through their minor league system but became dispensable due to the team's impressive number of middle infield prospects and depth in the majors. As a result, he was flipped to Pittsburgh in exchange for Robert Stephenson in early June and eventually made his big-league debut in late July. His sample in the majors (112 PA) followed his scouting report closely, as he struggled to make consistent contact (31.3 K%) and hit for little power (.050 ISO) while also not so much as attempting a stolen base. Some skills did carry over, most important of which was his glove, as he managed three defensive runs saved across 301 innings at shortstop. Oneil Cruz will return healthy in 2024, which means the position is blocked in terms of a starting role. However, Williams could stick on the roster as a utility infielder thanks to his ability to also play second base.

  • Pirates' Alika Williams: Looks to be on Opening Day roster

Williams is expected to make the Opening Day roster after Liover Peguero was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Ji Hwan Bae (hip) is also sidelined and could be headed for an injured list stint to begin the regular season. That leaves Williams as Pittsburgh's projected primary backup in the middle infield. His primary asset is his glove, so even on days when Williams is in the lineup, he doesn't project to have much fantasy appeal.

Nick Gonzales will fill his roster spot leading into the final week of the 2023 campaign.

  • Pirates' Alika Williams: Sitting Sunday

Williams is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers. • Pirates' Alika Williams: Getting look at shortstop

Williams went 2-for-3 with a double Tuesday against the Tigers. Williams has started four of the last five games at shortstop, pairing up with Liover Peguero to make up the Pirates' middle infield. That leaves Nick Gonzales as the odd man out for the time being, though Pittsburgh has shuffled playing time at the positions regularly this season. Williams is regarded as a big-league player primarily for his defense, and he has three hits through the first 12 at-bats of his big-league career.

  • Pirates' Alika Williams: Heads to bench Sunday

Williams is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Williams will take a seat for the series finale after he started at shortstop in each of the past three games while going 1-for-9 with an RBI. Though Nick Gonzales and Liover Peguero will draw starts at the two middle-infield spots Sunday and appear to be the Pirates' preferred options at the positions for the time being, neither player has produced well enough yet to run away with an everyday role. As such, look for Williams to stay involved and occasionally poach starts from one of the two players while he's up with the big club.

  • Pirates' Alika Williams: Getting call to majors

The Pirates will call up Williams from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Acquired from the Rays in June for Robert Stephenson, Williams has been raking to the tune of a .305/.384/.531 batting line with seven homers and three steals through 36 games with the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate. The 24-year-old can play both shortstop and second base, and he could get opportunities at both spots in the Pirates' struggling infield. He was the 37th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft but mostly underwhelmed during his time in the Tampa Bay system. He hit .237/.314/.417 in 42 games earlier this season with Triple-A Durham prior to being traded.

The 24-year-old has slashed .237/.314/.417 with five homers and three steals for Double-A Montgomery this season and has just a .714 OPS at the level for his career. Williams was the 37th overall pick in 2020, but scouting reports that suggested he would be a glove-first shortstop have so far proven accurate.
