  • Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Starts up rehab assignment

Ort (elbow) began a rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Worcester, striking out one batter over a perfect inning of relief. Ort has resided on the injured list since July 7 with right elbow inflammation, but he looks like he'll have a chance to rejoin the Boston bullpen before the regular season comes to a close. Prior to being shut down with the injury, Ort posted a 6.26 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 23 innings. If reinstated, Ort will likely be relegated to low-leverage work out of the bullpen.

  • Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Placed on injured list

The Red Sox placed Ort on the 15-day injured list Friday with right elbow inflammation, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Ort's placement on the IL frees up a spot for James Paxton to return from paternity leave. Ort holds a 6.26 ERA and 1.57 WHIP through 23 innings this season and will be eligible to return July 22.

  • Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Likely to serve as opener Wednesday

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said after Tuesday's loss to the Marlins that Ort will likely be the team's opening pitcher for Wednesday's game versus Miami, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Ort worked as the opener June 19 for the Red Sox, and he went 2.1 innings against the Yankees while allowing two runs in the first game of a doubleheader. The right-hander will likely get a chance to go through the Miami lineup one time before giving way to the rest of the Boston bullpen, so he doesn't project to have a chance at qualifying for a win.

  • Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Exits in third as opener

Ort allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out four over 2.1 innings as the opener in Boston's 6-2 win over the Yankees in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader. Ort allowed a couple of hard-hit balls, including a two-run home run, in the first inning then settled down and managed to give the Red Sox seven outs on 32 pitches. The reliever was called up to open Sunday's matinee after Saturday's game was rained out. He took the roster spot of Tanner Houck (face), who was placed on the 15-day injured list, but it's unclear if Ort will remain in Boston.

  • Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Back in majors

Ort was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Ort will rejoin the Red Sox's bullpen as a result of Kutter Crawford (hamstring) landing on the 15-day injured list Friday. • Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Faulty support

Ort allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one over one inning during Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh. Ort was partially victimized by shoddy fielding. He allowed a leadoff double to Jason Delay, who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly that wouldn't have happened without the fielding miscues. In between, there was a poor decision by first baseman Triston Casas, and another one by outfielder Masataka Yoshida which was compounded by third baseman Rafael Devers failing to cut off a misguided throw to plate. Ort's allowed four runs over five innings for a 7.20 ERA, which is an improvement on his spring ERA of 9.58.

  • Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Activated Saturday

Ort (personal) was reinstated from the restricted list Saturday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Ort was unavailable for Friday's series opener in Toronto due to his vaccination status, but he'll rejoin Boston's bullpen now that Canada no longer has a vaccine requirement for visitors. Over his last five appearances, the right-hander has posted a 9.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in four innings.

  • Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Earns first career save

Ort allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday against Baltimore. Ort successfully worked around a two-out single to maintain a two-run lead and tally his first career save. He's had a few stints with the Red Sox this season, with his most recent beginning Aug 29. In 12.1 innings since, Ort has maintained a 2.92 ERA with a 14:8 K:BB. It's unclear whether he will get more save chances prior to the close of the campaign, but it is worth noting that Matt Barnes was likely unavailable after throwing in Boston's previous two games.

He's made just one major-league appearance but will join Boston's bullpen after Michael Feliz was designated for assignment Friday. Although he pitched in high-leverage situations in the minors, it's not yet clear whether he'll have similar opportunities in the big leagues.

  • Red Sox's Kaleb Ort: Sent back to Worcester

Ort was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The right-hander joined the Red Sox last Friday, but he did not make an appearance during his four games with the club. Martin Perez's (illness) return from the COVID-19 IL pushes him back to Worcester for the time being, but he could rejoin the big-league roster should Boston need to add an arm during the final three weeks of the regular season.
