  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Could win final bench spot

Lopez is projected to secure the final spot on the Blue Jays' bench for Opening Day, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Toronto already has plenty of versatility on the infield with Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio all but locked into roster spots, but Lopez would provide added flexibility. The 24-year-old has only 11 big-league plate appearances over the last two seasons, but he slashed .297/.378/.415 through 91 games with Triple-A Buffalo in 2022 while playing second base, shortstop, center field and left field, and he's stolen double-digit bases in each of the last four minor-league campaigns. Lopez isn't hurting his chances of breaking camp on the 26-man roster either, going 7-for-15 to begin his spring with a 2:2 BB:K.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Left off wild-card roster

Lopez did not make the Blue Jays' 26-man wild-card roster, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. Lopez is not on the postseason roster after he went 5-for-8 with three RBI in Wednesday's doubleheader against the Orioles. His absence from the wild-card roster is not surprising considering he only appeared in eight games with the Blue Jays this season.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Back from rehab assignment

Lopez (oblique) was activated from the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday, Mitch Bannon of SI.com reports. Lopez opened the Triple-A campaign on the shelf with the oblique injury but has now joined Buffalo after a five-game rehab assignment with Single-A Dunedin. He had a .289/.347/.405 slash line with two home runs, 25 RBI, 36 runs and 15 stolen bases in 43 games at the Triple-A level last season, and he could be in the mix for a big-league promotion should the Blue Jays require infield depth later in the year.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Rehabbing at Single-A

Lopez (oblique) began a rehab assignment at Single-A Dunedin on Saturday and has gone hitless with a walk and RBI over eight plate appearances through two games. Lopez is eventually expected to advance to Triple-A Buffalo, where he currently resides on the 7-day injured list after hurting his oblique during spring training. The 23-year-old possesses a spot on the Blue Jays' 40-man roster and when healthy, he should be one of the top candidates for a call-up if the big club requires an extra infielder at any point.

In stops at Triple-A Buffalo and Double-A New Hampshire, Lopez hit a collective .315/.379/.437 with five home runs and 22 stolen bases across 508 plate appearances.

During his first stint in the big leagues, the 22-year-old Lopez appeared in one game and struck out in his lone plate appearance. He'll assume an everyday role upon heading back to Buffalo.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Officially recalled

Lopez was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo prior to Tuesday's game against Washington, Mitch Bannon of SI.com reports. It was announced earlier Tuesday that Toronto was planning on calling Lopez up ahead of Tuesday's game, and now the 22-year-old has officially been added to the 26-man roster with George Springer (knee) landing on the IL. Lopez should provide the Blue Jays excellent flexibility in a utility role, as he's played all three outfield positions as well as both middle infield spots in the minors.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Bound for majors

The Blue Jays plan to promote Lopez from Triple-A Buffalo ahead of Tuesday's game against the Nationals, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Toronto likely won't confirm Lopez's call-up or announce a corresponding transaction until shortly before Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. ET opening pitch, but the 22-year-old will presumably fill a utility role while he's up with the Blue Jays. Between stops at Buffalo and Double-A New Hampshire this season, Lopez has slashed .324/.398/.451 with three home runs and 12 stolen bases across 359 plate appearances. He's logged time at second base, shortstop and all three outfield spots in 2021, so he could be a candidate to pick up reps while Cavan Biggio (back) is on the injured list and with George Springer (ankle) day-to-day.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Protected from Rule 5 draft

Lopez's contract was purchased by the Blue Jays on Friday. He hit .324/.371/.425 with five home runs, 20 steals and a 12.8 percent strikeout rate at Low-A in 2019 and should open the 2021 season at High-A or Double-A.
