Expectations for Alejandro Kirk were high as he was coming off a season where he improved offensively and defensively. His defense got even better, but Kirk's batting took a couple of steps back. He continued to fan at a low 10.7 percent clip, but Kirk's average exit velocity dropped three mph while his hard-hit rate fell seven points to a career low 38.3 percent, only 33rd percentile. Kirk's power, and especially run production plummeted. His struggles at the plate cost Kirk playing time as he was used as the designated hitter only 17 times, compared to 50 the prior campaign. He hit the ball harder for the final three months of the season, so there is optimism for a rebound, but he's still going to share catching duties with Danny Jansen. Kirk's excellent contact rate yields a solid floor, but the playing time upside anticipated heading into last season is on hold.

    Kirk is expected to move to the bench for Tuesday's game against the Yankees and will likely lose out on starts to Danny Jansen (wrist), who was reinstated from the injured list Monday, ESPN.com reports. Between wins over the Rockies on Sunday and Yankees on Monday, Kirk reached base seven times, but he's still put together an underwhelming .200/.293/.220 slash line through 58 plate appearances while operating as the Blue Jays' primary backstop so far this season. Though Jansen remained on the bench Monday, he's on track to make his season debut Tuesday and looks poised to handle the larger portion of a timeshare behind the plate with Kirk. Jansen is the more polished defender of the two, and though Kirk has an All-Star appearance and Silver Slugger on his resume, he's been a slightly below league-average hitter since the start of the 2023 season (91 wRC+, .301 wOBA over 480 plate appearances).

Jansen has been diagnosed with a small fracture in the pisiform bone of his right wrist. The Jays are hoping he will miss just a couple weeks and can return early in the regular season, but that seems like a best-case scenario for a guy who's dealt with plenty of injuries.
