Rivera was surprisingly in the lineup against right-hander Dustin May, as Arizona manager Torey Lovullo benched primary third baseman and left-handed hitting Josh Rojas because of recent defensive inconsistency, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Rojas is working on technique with infield coach Tony Perezchica and may be held out of Thursday's series finale against left-hander Julio Urias, which means another start for the righty-hitting Rivera.

Rivera and Ketel Marte both homered in the fourth inning, which was enough for Arizona. It was Rivera's sixth home run in 30 games with the Diamondbacks. He's typically in the lineup against left-handers, a role which fits his profile considering his .882 OPS against LHP this season compared to a .651 OPS against righties.

Rivera put Arizona on the comeback trail with his sixth-inning solo shot. It was his first homer and second hit in three games since he was traded from the Royals last Monday. The righty-hitting third baseman has started twice in the team's last five contests, though the Diamondbacks have yet to face a southpaw since he joined them. Rivera owns a .238/.290/.413 slash line with seven homers, 23 RBI, 28 runs scored, nine doubles and three triples through 221 plate appearances this year. The versatility of regular third baseman Josh Rojas could afford Rivera slightly more than just a short-side platoon role.

The Diamondbacks recalled Rivera from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.
Rivera was playing at the Triple-A level when he was acquired from the Royals on Monday, but he will get a chance to show what he can do with his new club immediately. Diamondbacks' Emmanuel Rivera: Expected to join MLB roster
Arizona general manager Mike Hazen said Rivera is expected to report to the major-league club, but the logistics of that have yet to be determined, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Rivera gives the lefty-heavy Diamondbacks a right-handed hitter that will likely "see a lot of starts against lefties," either at third base or designated hitter, according to the general manager. Rivera has hit well at Triple-A -- a combined .291 average with 22 home runs over 330 at-bats in 2021 and 2022 -- but is batting just .243 with seven home runs over 288 at-bats in the majors. The minor-league numbers are inflated, given that his home park in Omaha is beneficial for right-handed batters.
