Alexander started at shortstop and went 1-for-4 in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Cardinals.
Alexander returned to the lineup after missing two games due to a hamstring. He was moved up to second in the order, as a couple of Arizona regulars were getting a breather. Alexander also committed his fourth throwing error of the season (minus-7 outs above average), although the fielding issues haven't impacted his playing time or offense. Alexander is hitting .316/.371/.915 with four doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI over 62 plate appearances.

Alexander (hamstring) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest in St. Louis.
Alexander tweaked his right hamstring Sunday and has now missed two straight starts. He was reportedly available off the bench Monday, so it shouldn't be long before he's ready to return to the lineup. However, with a team off day coming Thursday, the Diamondbacks might elect to hold him out until Friday. Kevin Newman will be at shortstop again Tuesday.

Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Available off bench Monday
Alexander (hamstring) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals but said he will be available off the bench, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
Alexander's early exit in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Giants was attributed to a right hamstring cramp, and the Diamondbacks don't seem to believe the rookie is dealing with anything significant a day later. He noted that he's not dealing with any structural damage, but because Alexander is still experiencing some discomfort in the hamstring, he'll get a day off Monday to continue healing. Kevin Newman will pick up the start at shortstop in Alexander's stead.

Alexander enjoyed the best game of his young career, hitting his first career grand slam in the eighth inning. Alexander bopped his second home run of the season in the second inning and has hit safely in four consecutive games. He's been the primary fill-in at shortstop since Geraldo Perdomo injured his knee. In the six games since the injury, the righty-hitting Alexander has started five, four against lefties and one against a righty. The lefty-hitting Jace Peterson, who started the one game Alexander didn't, is around and could see action against right-handers. Kevin Newman could also see action in short, but that would counter the organization's desire expressed during spring training to give its prospects consistent at-bats.

Diamondbacks' Blaze Alexander: Regular role could await
Alexander is expected to see regular starts at shortstop due to Geraldo Perdomo's (knee) expected placement on the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday's game in Atlanta, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
According to Piecoro, Perdomo tore the meniscus in his right knee Wednesday and needs surgery, which will likely keep him out for at least one month. The righty-hitting Alexander had already been a mainstay in the lineup versus left-handed pitching early on in the season, but the rookie should get the opportunity to face same-handed pitching more frequently while Perdomo is on the mend. Along with Alexander, utility men Jace Peterson and Kevin Newman -- the latter of whom is expected to be called up from Triple-A Reno -- will be candidates for added reps at shortstop. Alexander posted an .865 OPS with eight home runs and two stolen bases over 73 games at Reno last season and has gotten off to a strong start in the big leagues, slashing .278/.350/.444 through his first 20 plate appearances.

Alexander's fielding error led to an unearned run as part of Atlanta's two-run ninth inning that tied the game and set up the loss in the extra frame. With primary shortstop Geraldo Perdomo (knee) unavailable, the lefty-hitting Jace Peterson started against a righty and was replaced by Alexander against a lefty reliever. A platoon appears to be the pattern going forward for as long as Perdomo is sidelined. An expected MRI on Saturday should present a clearer indication of Perdomo's status.
