Player Outlook
Tylor Megill technically didn't make the Mets' Opening Day roster in 2023, but he was immediately needed as an injury fill-in for Justin Verlander and wound up making 25 starts by the end of the season. The results were underwhelming, with Megill holding a 4.70 ERA and watching his strikeout rate plummet to 18.5 percent and walk rate rise to 10.2 percent. While he has above-average velocity, Megill's fastball was by far his most-used (55.7 percent) and least-effective (48.6 percent hard-hit rate, .408 xWOBA) pitch last season. There should be a little positive regression there in 2024, but Megill has yet to show the ability to be both healthy and effective over long periods of time. He'll probably have to compete in spring training for a spot in the Mets' rotation.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Confirmed for rotation

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza announced Wednesday that Megill made the club's season-opening rotation, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The 28-year-old entered camp in competition to be the Mets' No. 5 starter with Kodai Senga (shoulder) set to begin the season on the injured list, and Megill delivered a solid showing during spring training with a 3.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB in 15.2 frames to win the job. The right-hander got stretched out to 76 pitches in his previous Grapefruit League start over the weekend and should begin the campaign with a full starter's workload. Megill made 25 starts for New York last season and had a 4.70 ERA 1.58 WHIP and 105:58 K:BB over 126.1 innings.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Keeps building up Monday

Megill allowed one run on three hits over four innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He struck out two without walking a batter. Aside from a second-inning solo shot by Tim Anderson, Megill looked sharp once again as he built up to 61 pitches (36 strikes). With Kodai Senga (shoulder) beginning the season on the IL, Megill appears ticketed for an Opening Day rotation spot, and he's earned it with an impressive 15:2 K:BB over 12 spring innings.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Dazzles against Yankees

Megill struck out six and walked two over three scoreless, no-hit innings during Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. The right-hander came into the game a favorite to secure the rotation spot opened up by Kodai Senga's shoulder injury, and Megill looked the part against a New York lineup that featured mainly younger players like Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells and Everson Pereira. Megill did plunk Oswald Peraza with a pitch and threw just 29 of 49 pitches for strikes, but he got some big whiffs with his new splitter. The 28-year-old right-hander has allowed only one run through his first eight spring innings with an impressive 13:2 K:BB.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Favorite for fifth starter role

Megill has emerged as the favorite to win the Mets' No. 5 starter job, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. The 28-year-old right-hander added a splitter to his arsenal over the winter, and so far the results have been encouraging, as Megill has allowed one run over his first five Grapefruit League innings with a 7:0 K:BB. A pitch that can generate more whiffs could be crucial for his fortunes -- after posting a strikeout rate north of 25 percent in the majors in 2021 and 2022, Megill saw that number drop to 18.5 percent last year. The Mets have a hole to fill in their Opening Day rotation due to Kodai Senga's shoulder strain, and while Jose Butto and Joey Lucchesi still have a chance to make their case for the No. 5 job to start the season due to Senga's expected absence, it appears to be Megill's to lose.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Solid spring debut

Megill gave up a run on two hits and struck out three over two innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. After a shaky first inning that saw him plunk Brendan Donovan to lead off the game before uncorking a wild pitch, Megill breezed through a 1-2-3 second frame. The right-hander came into camp looking to win the Mets' No. 5 starter role, but Kodai Senga's shoulder strain has opened up a second spot in the Opening Day rotation. Megill endured a rough 2023, but he worked on adding a splitter to his arsenal in the offseason and could offer more strikeout upside than the likes of Joey Lucchesi and Jose Butto, his main competition in the rotation battle.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Could secure rotation spot

Megill will be among the competitors for the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation following the injury to Kodai Senga (shoulder), Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Jose Quintana, Sean Manaea, Luis Severino and Adrian Houser appear locked into the first four spots, leaving Megill, Joey Lucchesi, Jose Butto and Max Kranick to fight for the final one. Megill offers arguably the best upside of the bunch, but he struggled in 2023, collecting a 4.70 ERA and 105:58 K:BB over 126.1 innings.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Notches ninth win

Megill (9-8) picked up the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Phillies, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 7.1 innings. He struck out seven. The right-hander saved his best performance of the season for last, as he hadn't worked more than six innings in any start this season. The quality start was Megill's sixth of 2023, but half of them have come in his last six outings -- a stretch in which he posted a 2.55 ERA and 31:12 K:BB through 35.1 innings. The impressive finish to the campaign should make the 28-year-old a favorite to secure an Opening Day rotation spot with the Mets in 2024, provided the team doesn't engage in another winter spending spree.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Start pushed back following rainout

Megill's next start will be pushed back after Friday's game between the Phillies and Mets was postponed due to inclement weather, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. The two teams will now play a doubleheader Saturday, with Megill presumably getting the ball in one of those contests. It will be the second start in a row against the Phillies for Megill, who yielded three runs over six innings in a no-decision his last time out.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Punches out six in no-decision

Megill did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out six. Megill was cruising through five scoreless innings before running out of steam in the sixth, and his potential scoreless outing was undone by a J.T. Realmuto three-run homer. The 28-year-old righty has struggled to the tune of a 4.92 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 98:56 K:BB over 119 innings this season. Megill, who has gone at least five innings in five straight starts but has just one win in that span to show for it, is currently scheduled to make his last start of the year against the Phillies at home.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Stuck with tough loss Saturday

Megill (8-8) took the loss Saturday as the Mets fell 3-2 to the Reds, giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out two. The right-hander came one out short of his fifth quality start of the season, tossing 56 of 97 pitches for strikes in a solid effort, but New York wasn't able to supply Megill with much run support. He's allowed three runs or less in six straight starts with a 3.13 ERA, but his 1.55 WHIP and 28:15 K:BB through 31.2 innings over that stretch suggest he still has some work to do to lock down a rotation spot for 2024. Megill's next outing lines up for a road series next weekend in Philadelphia.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Tosses five scoreless frames

Megill allowed two hits and four walks over five shutout innings in Sunday's win over the Twins. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. Megill faced some issues with his command but was able to work around a couple of threats to turn in five clean frames. He was locked into a duel with Minnesota's Pablo Lopez, and the Mets weren't able to break the scoreless tie until the ninth inning. Megill has allowed three or fewer runs in five straight outings, posting a 3.12 ERA during that span and lowering his season mark to 5.03. His next start is currently projected to be at home against the Reds.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Picks up eighth win

Megill (8-7) earned the win Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Mariners. He struck out six. Though Megill managed to claim his eighth victory of the season, he fell two outs shy of a quality start and served up a pair of home runs. Megill also struggled with control, walking a pair of batters and logging a hit by pitch. Over his last four appearances (21 innings), Megill owns a 3.86 ERA to pair with a 24:9 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to take on the Twins for his next start.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Impressive in no-decision

Megill did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings against the Rangers. He struck out eight. Megill turned in quite a performance against a formidable Rangers offense, allowing just one run in the sixth inning while logging a season-high eight strikeouts. The 28-year-old right-hander had struggled to a 6.86 ERA in his prior four starts since rejoining the Mets' rotation earlier this month. Overall, Megill sports a 5.29 ERA with a 1.68 WHIP and 82:47 K:BB across 20 starts (97 innings) this season. He'll look to build on Monday's performance in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend against the Mariners.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Shaky in Tuesday's loss

Megill (7-7) took the loss Tuesday as the Mets fell 3-2 to Atlanta, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five. The right-hander limited the damage despite being in constant trouble, as Atlanta had at least one runner in scoring position in every inning Megill worked -- something exacerbated by the four wild pitches he was charged with. Since rejoining the rotation in August, he's stumbled to a 6.86 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 16:7 K:BB through 19.2 innings, but the Mets don't have many other options. His next turn comes around early next week for a home start against the Rangers.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Nabs seventh win

Megill (7-6) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks over five innings against the Pirates. He struck out five. Megill allowed the leadoff man to reach base in each of the first three innings, with the latter coming home to score on a Bryan Reynolds home run. However, the right-hander was still able to get through five innings of work despite also matching his season high with four walks. It marked Megill's first win since June 16 against the Cardinals, though he still holds a 7.20 ERA through three August starts, along with a 11:5 K:BB.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Coughs up six runs

Megill (6-6) yielded six runs (five earned) on nine hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against Atlanta. Megill looked solid through three shutout innings before Atlanta broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth. He's been tagged with 22 earned runs over his last 22 frames, driving his season ERA up to 5.64. The 28-year-old has allowed at least four runs in seven of his 17 MLB appearances in 2023. Megill is lined up to face the Pirates at home next week.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Draws another start

Megill is scheduled to start Friday's game against Atlanta at Citi Field. He'll pick up a second straight turn through the New York rotation following last week's trade that sent Justin Verlander to Houston. After returning from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday to make his first appearance for the Mets since June 21, Megill took a loss against the Orioles while giving up five earned runs on nine hits and zero walks over 4.2 innings. He now sits on a 5.45 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 61:39 K:BB in 76 innings over 16 starts with the Mets this season, and those poor ratios should mostly keep him off the fantasy radar outside of NL-only leagues.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Joining rotation Saturday

Megill will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to start Saturday in Baltimore. Megill will join David Peterson as new members of the Mets rotation after the team traded Max Scherzer to the Rangers and Justin Verlander to the Astros within the past week. Since being optioned to Syracuse on June 22, Megill hasn't done much to inspire confidence that he'll emerge as a fantasy-friendly option as he makes his way back to the Mets. Over his six starts at Triple-A, Megill has posted an 8.67 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 14:11 K:BB in 27 innings.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Likely to rejoin rotation

Megill will likely be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to take Justin Verlander's spot in the Mets' rotation, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. David Peterson is set to take over for Max Scherzer, who was dealt to the Rangers this past Saturday, and the Mets will probably then turn to Megill as their other fill-in starter after moving Verlander to Houston on Tuesday afternoon. Megill, 28, carries an ugly 5.17 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 58:39 K:BB in 71.1 innings (15 starts) this season at the major-league level.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Optioned to Syracuse

The Mets optioned Megill to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday. After surrendering five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks over just 2.1 frames Wednesday against Houston, Megill will head to Triple-A in order to get back on track. Megill was scheduled to pitch Tuesday against the Brewers, and there's been no word yet on who will replace him in the rotation.
