  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Secures rotation spot

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch announced Friday that Olson will be a member of the club's season-opening rotation, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Olson posted a 4.12 ERA over 107 innings as a rookie last season and cemented his rotation spot during spring training with a 3.68 ERA and 14:4 K:BB in 14.2 frames. Tarik Skubal, Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty are set to start in the three-game, season-opening series against the White Sox, lining up Olson to pitch April 1 or 2 versus the Mets.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Pitches better Tuesday

Olson tossed three scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta. He allowed two hits and struck out four.

Olson pitched well against an Atlanta lineup that featured a few of the team's regulars. The young righty came into the contest having allowed four runs across his first 3.2 innings this spring. Olson is locked into a battle for one of Detroit's final rotation spots, with Matt Manning and Alex Faedo presumably in the mix as well.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Allows two runs again

Olson allowed two runs on four hits across two innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox. He struck out three.

Olson allowed two runs for the second straight time in Grapefruit League play, though he cut back on the walks after allowing three free passes across 1.2 innings Saturday. He also showed better swing-and-miss stuff after not recording any strikeouts in his last start. The righty is in the mix to start for a rebuilding Detroit team in 2024, and if Olson can keep the walks in check, he may be able to take a step forward in his second MLB season.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Struggles in spring debut

Olson allowed two runs on a hit and three walks across 1.2 innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees.

It wasn't the smoothest spring debut for Olson, as he struggled with his command, throwing only 16 of his 39 pitches for strikes and issuing the three walks. The young righty posted a 2.9 BB/9 in his rookie season last year, an area he'll look to improve on in his sophomore campaign. Olson should get a chance to start this season, though the Tigers did add Jack Flaherty and Kenta Maeda in the offseason, which makes the rotation more crowded.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Narrowly misses quality start

Olson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against Kansas City. He struck out seven.

The 24-year-old allowed just one unearned run, courtesy of his own throwing error, through the first five frames Tuesday. He surrendered his only earned run on back-to-back hits to start the sixth, and despite punching out the next two batters, Olson was lifted after 5.2 innings and 92 pitches, much to the dismay of fantasy managers in leagues that reward quality starts. After surrendering six earned runs to the Cubs on Aug. 22, Olson has held opponents to fewer than three tallies in six consecutive outings, posting a 1.51 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 35:13 K:BB across 35.2 innings. During that same stretch, the right-handed rookie has lowered his season-long ERA from 5.29 to 3.99, considerably increasing his fantasy draft stock for the 2024 campaign.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Keeps rolling Wednesday

Olson (5-7) earned the win Wednesday over the Dodgers, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings.

Olson was sharp, keeping the Dodgers off the board until Max Muncy's solo home run in the sixth inning. Through four outings in September, Olson has allowed four runs across 25.2 innings, posting quality starts in each appearance. He's now at a 4.13 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 96:31 K:BB through 98 innings over 20 outings (17 starts) this season. He's projected for a favorable home start versus the Royals next week.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Another strong outing

Olson (4-7) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and four walks over six innings against the Reds. He struck out seven.

Olson didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning, when Jake Fraley singled to open the frame. The right-hander then surrendered a solo homer to Spencer Steer two batters later but was still able to get through the inning and earn his fourth win of the season. Olson has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in three consecutive starts to open the month, going at least six innings on each occasion. He's also recorded at least seven strikeouts in three of his last five outings.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Quality start ends in defeat

Olson (3-7) took the loss Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk over 6.2 innings against the White Sox. He struck out five.

Olson was locked in a 0-0 pitcher's duel with White Sox starter Mike Clevinger through six innings but blinked in the seventh when a two-out, two-run homer by Yoan Moncada chased him from the game. After struggling to the tune of a 5.29 ERA over his first 68 big-league innings, Olson has begun to put things together with a 1.50 ERA in his last three starts spanning 18 innings. He'll look to continue this momentum in his next start, currently scheduled for a home matchup against the Reds.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Seven scoreless in win

Olson improved to 3-6 Saturday, allowing four hits over seven scoreless innings in a 10-0 victory over the White Sox. He struck out one and didn't issue any walks.

Olson needed just 79 pitches to cruise through seven innings unscathed Saturday, scattering just four singles in a blowout victory. Detroit handed him a 4-0 lead before he took the hill, and the 24-year-old clearly pitched to contact, as he managed only one strikeout in the outing. In the rookie's two starts following his rough outing against the Cubs on Aug. 22, Olson has allowed just one run and posted a 0.97 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB across 11.1 innings. He is currently slated for a rematch with the White Sox at the end of the upcoming week.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Strikes out 10 but takes loss

Olson (2-6) allowed one run on three hits across 4.1 innings and took the loss Monday against the Yankees. He walked four and struck out 10.

It was a mixed bag for Olson, who needed 100 pitches to retire only 13 batters. However, the rookie also recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts and limited New York to just the one run, which kept the Tigers in the game until the bullpen faltered. Despite not completing five innings, it was a step in the right direction for Olson after allowing 10 runs over his last two starts (7.1 innings). The righty will look to keep this up and go a bit deeper in the contest during his next outing, which is currently penciled in for Saturday against the White Sox.

  • Tigers' Reese Olson: Six earned runs in no-decision

Olson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Cubs. He struck out seven.

The rookie right-hander stymied Chicago's offense through the first three innings, but the floodgates opened in the fourth when Dansby Swanson and Jeimer Candelario both launched two-run homers. Two more runs were charged to Olson after he was removed with two outs in the fifth, and Olson's failure to complete five innings prevented him from earning the victory. The 24-year-old tossed a gem against Minnesota on Aug. 10, but has allowed 10 earned runs across 7.1 innings in his two starts since then.
