Player Outlook
When healthy, Casey Mize has looked like a solid MLB pitcher. However, an elbow injury cut his 2022 campaign short after only two starts, and then he missed all of 2023 due to Tommy John surgery. Back in 2021, Mize posted a 3.71 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 118 strikeouts across 150.1 innings in his first full season as starter for Detroit. The 26-year-old should have a rotation spot locked up heading into 2024, though the Tigers will undoubtedly limit his workload, and it's fair to expect some rust. Mize was drafted first overall back in 2018, so the talent is certainly there, and fantasy managers will be keeping a watchful eye on how he looks early in the season. However, the best bet for now is to temper expectations and probably not count on Mize for consistent production right away. He's still only made 39 starts at the MLB level, so even if he wasn't returning from a major surgery, the young righty would probably be a volatile option anyways.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Earns first win

Mize (1-0) allowed five hits and three walks over six shutout frames Sunday, striking out four and picking up a win over the Twins. Mize worked out of a few jams in the scoreless outing, including a bases-loaded threat in the first inning. He's given up three or fewer runs in each of his four starts this season and has produced back-to-back quality starts. Mize dropped his ERA to 2.95 with a 16:6 K:BB through 21.1 frames. His next start is lined up to be at home against the Royals.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Delivers quality start

Mize didn't factor in the decision Tuesday against the Rangers after he struck out six and allowed two runs on five hits and no walks over six innings. It was an impressive performance from Mize, who kept the defending champs scoreless until the fifth inning, when Texas scratched across two runs on four hits. The right-hander generated just seven swinging strikes but still produced a season-high six strikeouts. After missing all of last season while recovering from Tommy John and back surgeries, Mize appears to have settled in through three starts with a 4.11 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 12:3 K:BB in 15.1 innings.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Solid in no-decision

Mize allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over five innings during Tuesday's 5-3 win at Pittsburgh. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. The right-hander didn't have his best stuff, as he generated just seven swinging strikes on 83 pitches, but he limited the damage to a pair of runs. Mize looked less rusty than in his season debut, which is encouraging after he missed the entirety of 2023 while recovering from Tommy John and back surgeries. He tentatively lines up to face the defending champion Rangers in Detroit early next week.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Logs no-decision in 2024 debut

Mize allowed three runs on five hits across 4.1 innings and did not factor into the decision in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Mets. He gave up two walks and struck out four. Mize was originally scheduled to start Tuesday, but that game was postponed twice due to inclement weather in New York. That may have thrown off the righty's normal routine, as he wasn't particularly sharp in his 2024 debut. This was also Mize's first appearance since April of 2022 following a lengthy recovery from Tommy John and back surgeries, so some rust was to be expected. The 26-year-old has plenty of upside, but the Tigers will likely exercise caution with him this year. Mize is tentatively set to take the mound again Tuesday against the Pirates.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Tigers-Mets postponed Wednesday

Mize and the Tigers won't face the Mets on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather at Citi Field. The interleague matchup has now been postponed for consecutive days and will be made up as part of a doubleheader Thursday. Expect Mize to start at least one of the two contests.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Tuesday start postponed

Mize and the Tigers will not face the Mets on Tuesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Tuesday's game will be made up Thursday afternoon, which was originally a scheduled off day for both teams. Mize's first start of the season will likely be pushed back to Wednesday, moving Tarik Skubal's next outing to Thursday.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Wins spot in rotation

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch announced Friday that Mize will be a member of the club's season-opening rotation, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. The right-hander hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2022 as he spent last season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but he pitched well enough during spring training with a 2.35 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 15.1 innings, though he did walk nine batters. Mize lines up to make his first start of the season Apr. 1 or 2 against the Mets with Tarik Skubal, Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty scheduled for the opening series versus the White Sox.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Still vying for rotation spot

Mize has pitched well this spring but is still competing for a rotation spot to begin the season, Matthew Ritchie of MLB.com reports. Mize, the former No. 1 overall pick, seems likely to snag a rotation spot if he's fully healthy in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. However, the Tigers are being cautious with him, which could explain why they're not trying to put too much on the righty's plate. Reese Olson and Matt Manning are also in the mix for Detroit's final two rotation spots, with Tarik Skubal, Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty all locked in as starters.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: First MLB appearance in 22 months

Mize gave up two earned runs on one hit and two walks while striking out one over 1.2 innings Tuesday in the Tigers' 6-4 win over the Blue Jays in Grapefruit League play. Mize tossed 35 pitches (17 strikes) in his spring debut, which also marked his first official MLB game in 22 months following a prolonged recovery from Tommy John and back surgeries. The 26-year-old's fastball topped out at 97.3 miles per hour and averaged 95.8 mph, a couple ticks up from his average over his two starts during the 2022 regular season. While the velocity readings are encouraging for Mize, sharpening his command and control will be the greater concerns for him as the spring unfolds. Mize isn't assured a spot in Detroit's Opening Day rotation, and even if he does secure a starting gig, he could be piggybacked by another pitcher early on during the season as the Tigers look to manage his innings in 2024.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Hopes for busy spring

The Tigers haven't discussed any specific workload restrictions on Mize for spring training or the regular season as he returns from Tommy John surgery, MLB.com reports. Mize added that he hopes to throw "as much as they let me" in camp, though the Tigers will certainly take a cautious approach. Even if a specific innings limit isn't announced for the regular season, the team will surely be careful then as well, considering Mize last took an MLB mound in April of 2022. The righty's career high for innings in a season is 150.1, which he recorded back in 2021, and it would be safe to assume that somewhere around that number will end up being his maximum in 2024 if he's able to stay healthy. Mize can be an impact pitcher when on top of his game, but it might take him a little while to shake off some rust, so fantasy managers will need to be patient.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Reaches agreement with Tigers

Mize signed a one-year, $840,000 contract with the Tigers on Friday to avoid arbitration Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Mize's deal also includes a $3.1 million club option for 2025, though he would remain under team control if Detroit declined to pick up the option. Mize sat out all of last season while recovering from a Tommy John procedure, but he's been deemed healthy and should be ready to go for the start of spring training. The 26-year-old right-hander holds a 4.29 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through 188.2 career big-league innings.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Clean bill of health

Mize is considered fully recovered from elbow and back surgeries and will enter spring training at 100 percent, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. We last saw Mize in game action in April of 2022, as he underwent both Tommy John surgery and back surgery in the summer of that year. The right-hander has proclaimed himself "ready to go" now, though, and will attempt to show the Tigers in spring training that he should break camp as a member of their rotation. Considering Mize didn't throw an inning in 2023 and just 10.2 frames in 2022, his workload figures to be monitored closely in 2024. It's possible the Tigers could choose to ease him back into things with some starts in the minors at the beginning of next season.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Bullpen session on tap

Mize (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Mize was pulled off his throwing program Aug. 30 due to elbow fatigue. He's now scheduled to resume throwing off a mound and could face hitters again shortly afterward. However, there is still no guarantee Mize makes it back to Detroit's pitching staff before the end of the season.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Could throw again next week

Mize (elbow/shoulder) is aiming to resume his throwing program early next week, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Mize experienced some shoulder fatigue while tossing live batting practice Wednesday, but it shouldn't be too much of a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. That said, the 26-year-old right-hander could run out of time to make it back to the majors before the conclusion of the 2023 regular season.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Faces hitters again Wednesday

Mize (elbow) threw his second round of live batting practice Wednesday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Mize appears to be close to beginning a minor-league rehab assignment and should be able to make a few appearances for the Tigers in the closing weeks of the 2023 season, whether in a starting or relief role. The 26-year-old right-hander required both Tommy John and back surgery last summer.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Checks out fine after live session

Mize (elbow) reported no issues after throwing a 20-pitch live batting practice session Saturday, MLB.com reports. "It's good to have a hitter in the box again," said Mize, who will look to throw more pitches in his next session in a few days. The 26-year-old faced hitters for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery and back surgery last summer. According to manager A.J. Hinch, Mize looked "exceptional" during the session, with the right-hander sporting a fastball that hovered around the mid-90s and also mixing in sharp-breaking curveballs. Mize could need at least a couple more live sessions before getting cleared to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. He could have a chance to pitch in the big leagues before the season ends Oct. 1, but if that comes to fruition, the Tigers may deploy him as a reliever or as an opening pitcher rather than a traditional starter.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Set to face live hitters

Mize (elbow) is set to throw live batting practice Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. It will be his first time facing live hitters since he underwent both Tommy John and back surgery last summer. Mize is hoping to make a few appearances for the Tigers before the conclusion of the 2023 campaign, though the clock is obviously ticking.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Scheduled for bullpen session

Mize (elbow) is scheduled to throw his next bullpen session Wednesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Mize continues to keep a potential 2023 return in his sights as he continues to build his arm strength back up. The starting pitcher will remain relatively constrained during the bullpen sessions for the time being as he tries to finish his recovery from June 2022 Tommy John surgery.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Throws another bullpen session

Mize (elbow) is scheduled to throw his next bullpen session Saturday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Mize threw is first bullpen session July 28 after undergoing Tommy John surgery last June. He only threw fastballs in that session, and it remains to be seen what he will throw in his next one. It is still a possibility that Mize returns before the end of the season, but he is running out time to get fully stretched out in 2023.

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Throwing off slope of mound

Mize (elbow) will throw off the slope of the mound Wednesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. It will be the first time Mize has thrown off of any kind of incline since he underwent Tommy John surgery last June. The right-hander had a bit of a hiccup when he had to be shut down a while with back soreness, but he's back on track now. A late-season return remains possible.
