Rays' Wander Franco: Tallies late homer
Franco went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Thursday against the Tigers.
Franco added an insurance run in the eighth inning with a solo home run off Mason Englert to put the Rays up 4-0. While he was otherwise quiet, the performance was reassuring after he battled a quadriceps issue late in spring training. After managing only 344 plate appearances in 2022, Franco will look to put together a full season of productivity this season.

Rays' Wander Franco: Batting second Opening Day
Franco is starting at shortstop and batting second for the Rays in Thursday's opener against the Tigers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Franco recently required an MRI for soreness in his right quad, but the imaging came back clean and he's ready to roll for Opening Day. The young switch hitter and his teammates will be going up against Detroit lefty Eduardo Rodriguez.

Rays' Wander Franco: Swings in batting cage Monday
Franco (quadriceps) posted a video on his personal Instagram account featuring him swinging off a tee in the batting cage Monday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports.
Franco's ability to take swings while he manages what he's described as right quad tightness is another sign that the 22-year-old is trending toward being available for Thursday's season opener versus the Tigers. Before locking Franco into weekly fantasy lineups, however, managers will want to confirm that he is in fact in the starting nine when Tampa Bay releases its lineup a few hours before Thursday's 3:10 p.m. ET first pitch.

Rays' Wander Franco: Feels ready for Opening Day
Franco said Monday that his sore right quadricep has responded well to treatment, and he expects to be ready for to go for the Rays' season opener Thursday versus the Tigers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. "I feel good, thank God, and I'm ready to start on Thursday," Franco said.
Elaborating further on the nature of his injury, Franco added that he believes his quad issue is more along the lines of tightness than a strain, and after a few more days of treatment, he should be ready to handle an everyday role at shortstop. The 22-year-old won't be available for Monday's Grapefruit League finale versus the Yankees and will finish the spring season with a .300/.417/.700 slash line to go with two home runs and a stolen base in nine games.

Rays' Wander Franco: 'Favorable' outlook after MRI
Manager Kevin Cash said Franco's MRI results on his sore right quadriceps were "favorable," and the shortstop could be ready to play in the season opener against Detroit on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The 22-year-old won't play in Tampa Bay's final exhibition game Monday and will prioritize rest and treatment over the next few days. Even if Franco isn't cleared for Opening Day on Thursday, at this point it doesn't appear he'll require a trip to the injured list to begin the campaign.

Franco (quadriceps) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Franco was scratched from the lineup before Saturday's Grapefruit League contest against Boston with right quadriceps tightness. The infielder's absence was deemed precautionary, but Tampa Bay will have the 22-year-old undergo further imaging to ascertain whether he's dealing with any structural damage. If Franco is forced to miss time to begin the season, Taylor Walls would likely see the majority of reps at shortstop in his absence.

Franco was scratched from the lineup for Saturday's game against Boston due to right quadriceps soreness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Franco was listed as the designated hitter but didn't come up to the plate for his first at-bat. The Rays are calling his removal precautionary, so Opening Day still seems to be in play, but the young shortstop's history of quad problems make the issue more worrisome than it might otherwise be. A strained right quadriceps cost him nearly a month in 2022, and he had a pair of brief absences earlier that year due to minor issues with the same muscle.

Rays' Wander Franco: Replaced before first at-bat
Franco was listed as the Rays' designated hitter Saturday against the Red Sox and was expected to bat second but was replaced prior to his first at-bat of the game, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The reason for the change of plans is not yet clear, but it's possible Franco is dealing with some sort of injury. He hasn't looked as though he's playing hurt this spring, slashing .263/.364/.526 through nine games.

Rays' Wander Franco: Entering 2023 full healthy
Franco entered spring training fully healthy, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
Franco was limited to only 344 plate appearances in 2022 due to a combination of quadriceps and wrist injuries. Frustrated by being sidelined, Franco focused his offseason work on durability with the goal being to remain in the lineup more regularly. While he had a disappointing 2022 campaign, Franco still managed six home runs, eight stolen bases and a .745 OPS in the partial year.
