The Nationals optioned Abbott to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Abbott has pitched well this spring but nonetheless finds himself on the outside looking in for a roster spot. He figures to serve in a swingman role again for the Nationals this season.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Stuck with fifth loss
Abbott (0-5) took the loss in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out six. The 27-year-old will head into the offseason still looking for his first career win in the majors. Abbott tossed 48 of 88 pitches for strikes, and he finishes the season having served up 12 homers in 48 innings for the Nationals (2.25 HR/9) to drive his 5.25 ERA. He's unlikely to seriously compete for a rotation spot in 2023 unless Washington deals with another rash of pitcher injuries.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Start rained out
Abbott won't make his scheduled start Monday against the Mets as the game has been postponed due to inclement weather, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The two teams are now set to play a doubleheader Tuesday, with Abbott slated to start Game 1, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com. Paolo Espino is in line to take the mound for the nightcap.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Fans seven in fourth loss
Abbott (0-4) took the loss Monday, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits and three walks over five innings as the Nationals were routed 8-0 by Atlanta. He struck out seven. The rookie right-hander got little help from his offense or defense, but Abbott also did himself no favors by serving up homers to Matt Olson in the fourth inning and Marcell Ozuna in the fifth. Abbott has a 5.59 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 16:9 K:BB through 19.1 innings in September, and he'll likely make one more appearance this season against the Phillies over the weekend.... See More ... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Saddled with third loss
Abbott (0-3) took the loss Monday as the Nationals fell 5-2 to Atlanta, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over four innings. He failed to strike out a batter. The 27-year-old righty actually produced 11 swinging strikes among his 69 pitches, but he couldn't put away any Atlanta batters when it mattered most. Abbott hasn't looked great since shifting back into the rotation, allowing seven runs in 11.1 innings over three starts in September, but the Nats' lack of alternatives will likely keep him in that role the rest of the way.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Lasts three innings in start
Abbott did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over three innings in a 4-3 loss against the Orioles. He struck out three. Abbott got the start Tuesday but could not capitalize as he needed 72 pitches to get through three innings, surrendering two runs in the process. He has been much more effective working out of the bullpen this season, posting a 2.00 ERA over nine innings in relief compared to a 5.19 ERA through 26 innings in six starts. He owns a 4.37 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 35 innings in total this season.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Strikes out five Wednesday
Abbott allowed a run on five hits and no walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Wednesday. Abbott was solid, but Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo home run to account for the lone run on the right-hander's line. Abbott pitched two scoreless innings of relief over two appearances since the start of the month, most recently Sept. 4; therefore, he was likely to face at least some restrictions. He still threw 88 pitches (56 strikes) and fared well against a division-leading club. Abbott carries a 4.06 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 29:13 K:BB through 31 innings into his next outing, which tentatively projects as a home start versus the Orioles next week if he remains in the rotation.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Makes return to majors
The Nationals recalled Abbott from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday. Abbott was demoted to Triple-A last week to clear a spot in the rotation for Cade Cavalli, but Abbott will end up reclaiming a starting role after Cavalli was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right shoulder inflammation. Since the Nationals plan to shut Cavalli down for the next two weeks before he's even cleared to resume throwing, Abbott could be in line for multiple turns through the rotation. Abbott, who owns a 4.74 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 24.2 innings with the big club this season, will be available out of the bullpen Wednesday against the Athletics, but he's expected to slot into the rotation at some point during this weekend's series with the Mets, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Sent to minors
Abbott was optioned to Triple-A Rochester after Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Mariners, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. The 26-year-old was shifted from the rotation to the bullpen over the weekend and fired two scoreless frames Tuesday against the Mariners, but he's now headed back to Triple-A. Abbott was demoted to make room on the big-league roster for prospect Cade Cavalli, who is scheduled to make his MLB debut Friday versus the Reds.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Allows two runs
Abbott did not factor into the decision against the Cubs on Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking one over six innings. Abbott threw 57 of 83 pitches for strikes across six frames for his first quality start of the year. Abbott has been a mixed bag since becoming a starter for the Nationals. He shined in his starting debut earlier this month, lasting five innings and not allowing a run, but is next two starts resulted in 10 earned runs over 7.2 innings, so turning in a quality start is a good sign that the young righty may be figuring things out. He will take a 5.16 ERA into his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Crushed for seven runs
Abbott (0-1) allowed seven runs on seven hits and five walks over 3.2 innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Phillies. Abbott never really found a groove Sunday as he gave up four homers in the short start, including three in the fourth frame. It was his second MLB start of the season, and he'd allowed just one run in nine frames with the big-league club before the rough outing. The 26-year-old righty saw his ERA climb to 5.68 with an 11:8 K:BB on the year. Assuming he stays in the rotation, Abbott is projected to face the Padres at home next week.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Pitches well in first start
Abbott did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Mets, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out three and walking two over five innings. Abbott was called upon to start for a thin Nationals rotation and rose to the occasion, throwing 51 of 76 pitches for strikes across five frames. It was his fourth appearance of the season and his first as a starter. He pitched sporadically in relief twice in July and once in June. The righty has allowed just one earned run across nine innings this season for the Nats, and will take a 1.00 ERA into his next appearance.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Still in line to start Tuesday
Abbott remains in line to start Tuesday's home game against the Mets, even though he appeared out of the bullpen in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Cardinals, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Even though he was named a starter for the series against the Mets in advance of Sunday's contest, Abbott surprisingly entered the game in the ninth inning with the Cardinals holding a five-run lead. Abbott struck out two over the 21-pitch scoreless inning, which manager Dave Martinez clarified afterward was something that the right-hander asked to do in lieu of throwing a traditional between-starts bullpen session. The impromptu relief appearance shouldn't affect Abbott's workload Tuesday, but the fact that he hasn't pitched more than 4.1 innings in any of his outings for the big club or Triple-A Rochester this season means he likely won't work deep into his upcoming start.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Recalled by Washington
Abbott was recalled by the Nationals on Saturday. He has given up one run while striking out four in three innings over two MLB appearances this season. Abbott will presumably pitch in low-leverage situations out of the bullpen, but he could also be an option to serve as a spot starter. He's started eight of his 12 appearances at the Triple-A level between the Nationals' and Cubs' affiliates this year.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Back with big club Sunday
The Nationals recalled Abbott from Triple-A Rochester ahead of Sunday's game against Atlanta, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Abbott is back with the Nationals three days after he was returned to the minors upon being designated as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader with the Mariners. He covered two frames in relief in the first game of the twin bill that day and should be available as a multi-inning option Sunday behind starter Erasmo Ramirez, who won't work deep into the contest in what will be a bullpen day for Washington.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Joins big club for doubleheader
The Nationals recalled Abbott from Triple-A Rochester to have him serve as their 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader with the Mariners, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Abbott is up with the Nationals for the second time this season and will be available for both ends of the twin bill before heading back to Rochester on Thursday. His lone appearance with the big club came back on June 19, when he struck out a batter in a scoreless inning of relief against the Phillies.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Headed back to minors
The Nationals optioned Abbott to Triple-A Rochester following Sunday's 9-3 win over the Phillies, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. MLB teams won't be able to carry more than 12 pitchers on the 26-man active roster beginning Monday, so Abbott's demotion will bring the Nationals down to the maximum allotted arms. He made his team debut Sunday, striking out one over a scoreless inning to finish out the game.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Cory Abbott: Designated for assignment
Abbott was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Saturday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Abbott began the season at Triple-A Iowa and will now lose his place on the 40-man roster after Mark Leiter's contract was selected by the Cubs on Saturday. Abbott has allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six in six innings in his first two starts in Iowa this year, and he'll likely remain in the organization if he goes unclaimed on waivers.... Cubs' Cory Abbott: Sent to Triple-A
Abbott was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Friday. Abbott was likely always a long shot to break camp with the team after a poor debut season last year. In 17.1 innings, he stumbled to a 6.75 ERA and 12:11 K:BB.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Cory Abbott: Surrenders two across five frames
Abbott didn't factor into the decision during Friday's 4-3 loss to St. Louis, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings. Making his first big league start, Abbott pitched well to every Cardinal batter other than Tyler O'Neill, who tagged the righty for two solo home runs, and enjoyed his best outing all season in what is likely his final appearance of the campaign. The rookie concludes 2021 without a decision in 17.1 innings featuring a 6.75 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 12:11 K:BB.... See More ... See Less
