Player Outlook
Drey Jameson, coming off an impressive four-start run late in 2022, competed for a starting job during Spring Training but lost out to Ryne Nelson and began 2023 as a multi-inning reliever in the majors. He pitched as both a starter and reliever, but it was out of the bullpen where Jameson popped, posting a 2.81 ERA over 32 relief innings. The right-hander, who was sent down to the minors in May, rediscovered his slider there and shined out of the bullpen after being recalled. Everything changed in July, when he felt something in his forearm, which eventually turned out to be a ligament in his elbow. Jameson put off surgery, hoping to pitch again, but the right-hander was eventually shut down and underwent Tommy John surgery in September. As such, he's unlikely to pitch in 2024.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Placed on 60-day IL

The Diamondbacks placed Jameson (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Saturday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Manager Torey Lovullo said Thursday that Jameson isn't expected back until 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in September, so Jameson's move to the 60-day IL is simply procedural. Jameson's roster spot will be filled by Randal Grichuk, who signed a one-year deal with Arizona on Saturday.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Jameson (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Giving the timing of the procedure, Jameson seems doubtful to return to a major-league mound before the 2025 campaign. The 26-year-old right-hander pitched to a 3.32 ERA and 37:18 K:BB over 40.2 innings (three starts, 12 relief appearances) this season with the Diamondbacks.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Shut down from throwing

Jameson (elbow) has had his throwing program interrupted by arm tenderness, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Jameson chose to rehab his strained UCL rather than have surgery to repair the issue. He was hoping to return at some point in 2023, though this development has almost certainly closed the door on that possibility.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Moved to 60-day IL

The Diamondbacks transferred Jameson (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Saturday. Jameson landed on the injured list Friday with right elbow inflammation, and his move to the 60-day IL ensures he'll be sidelined through early September. Tyler Gilbert was selected from Triple-A Reno to fill Jameson's spot on the 40-man roster.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Continues scoreless run

Jameson allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over three scoreless relief innings in Thursday's 6-1 loss to the Rays. Jameson was part of a bullpen crew that logged seven scoreless frames after starter Brandon Pfaadt allowed six runs in two-plus innings. For Jameson, it was his fourth consecutive scoreless, multi-inning appearance, and over that stretch he's given up seven hits and one walk over 9.1 innings with 10 strikeouts. The right-hander has a 2.61 ERA out of the bullpen since being called up from Triple-A Reno in late May. The Diamondbacks are expected to be in the market for starting pitching, but until they land one, Jameson has a path back into the rotation. He's thrown 20.2 innings over eight relief appearances, so it wouldn't take long to stretch him out.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Logs scoreless relief outing

Jameson struck out one over two scoreless and hitless relief innings in Sunday's 12-3 loss to Cleveland. Jameson gave the Diamondbacks length after starter Zach Davies was removed during the fourth inning. It was the second consecutive appearance in which Jameson threw multiple innings following a short outing from a starter -- he cleaned up for Ryne Nelson on Thursday. Jameson has been used as a long reliever since being called up May 27 but has made spot starts for Arizona and five starts while at Triple-A Reno prior to his current stint with the D-backs. While Arizona appears to be cruising atop the NL West, the back end of the rotation is shaky. Outside of Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, the team's starters have a 6.18 ERA over 43 starts. If manager Torey Lovullo is contemplating change, Jameson is already in house. The right-hander has a 3.45 ERA over 15.2 innings (six relief outings) since returning to MLB.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Bullpen role expected

Jameson will throw out of the bullpen for Arizona, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. The right-hander was called up Saturday when the Diamondbacks sent Brandon Pfaadt to the minors. A rotation shakeup loomed as Zach Davies was activated from the injured list to start Saturday. That transaction coupled with the Pfaadt demotion signaled an easy one-to-one-swap of Davies and Pfaadt. However, things got murky during Saturday's game when manager Torey Lovullo brought starter Tommy Henry in as a reliever, which led to speculation about Jameson entering the rotation and Henry going to the bullpen. Lovullo cleared up matters following the game, noting that the left-handed Henry will remain in the rotation and pitch Wednesday -- he faced four batters and threw just 10 pitches. Jameson is expected to serve in a multi-inning relief role.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Back in big leagues

Jameson was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Saturday. Jameson made three starts and three relief appearances early in the season, winning two games and saving another, but he was optioned in late April despite recording a 3.71 ERA. His 16.0 percent walk rate was high, and while he cut that mark down to 8.9 percent across five Triple-A starts, he also posted a 5.79 ERA. His promotion Saturday comes in the same set of transactions as Brandon Pfaadt's demotion but also Zach Davies' return from the injured list, so Jameson may have to settle for a relief role for now.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Optioned to Triple-A

Jameson was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Monday. He'll cede his spot on the 26-man active roster to Tommy Henry, who who was called up from Triple-A in advance of his start Monday against the Royals. Jameson has labored in his last two starts, lasting just one inning in his most recent outing Sunday. He should join Reno's rotation to work on his efficiency. Though Henry is filling Jameson's spot in the rotation for now, prospect Brandon Pfaadt could eventually occupy the spot if Henry falters in his return to the big leagues.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Yanked after one inning

Jameson (2-1) allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in one inning Sunday, striking out one and taking a loss against the Padres. Jameson needed 43 pitches to get through a disastrous first inning and didn't even get the opportunity to go back out. The Padres batted around the lineup, and most of the damage came on Matt Carpenter's two-run double. Prior to Sunday's outing, Jameson had allowed just four runs through 16 innings this season. He saw his ERA jump from 2.25 to 3.71 alongside a 16:12 K:BB. Jameson's next outing is currently scheduled to be in Colorado.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Solid in second start

Jameson did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Cardinals, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out three. Jameson continues to provide valuable innings on the mound for Arizona. The 25-year-old has acquired two impressive wins and a save on the season, posting a 2.25 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 16 innings between the rotation and bullpen. While he did not factor into this decision, Jameson limited the Cardinals' batters to two runs on four hits before being relieved in the fourth inning. He figures to get another start in the upcoming series with San Diego while Zach Davies (oblique) remains sidelined.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Sleeper pitchers for Week 4 (April 17-23)

Drey Jameson's return to the starting rotation went without a hitch, other than him lasting only four innings, but he'll be better equipped to take on more in his second and third outings. Those will come against the Cardinals and Padres, neither of which makes for a favorable matchup, but Jameson has the upside to make good anyway.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: May get multiple starts

Jameson may make multiple starts as a fill-in for Zach Davies, whose oblique strain is expected to take "several weeks" to heal, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo described Davies' injury as "more than a (Grade) 1," with a Grade 1 strain being the least severe. Jameson excelled in his first start as a replacement for Davies, shutting down the Brewers over four scoreless innings last Wednesday. His next expected start is Tuesday in St. Louis. Jameson pitched as a starter in spring training -- he eventually lost out on the No. 5 job to Ryne Nelson -- and should be able to build up higher pitch counts and get deeper into games.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Stellar in spot start

Jameson did not factor into the decision Wednesday, tossing four scoreless innings on three hits and zero walks during a 7-3 win over Milwaukee. He struck out four. Jameson was filling in for Zach Davies, who was recently placed on the 15-day injured list with an oblique injury, and despite looking sharp through four innings, he was pulled after just 54 pitches. The second-year right-hander would seem to be an intriguing streaming option while Davies is out, especially as he stretches out further after a brief stint in the bullpen. He's tentatively scheduled to pitch again versus St. Louis next week.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Possible waiver wire pickups

It didn't seem like Zach Davies would be long for the Diamondbacks rotation with some of the young arms they had waiting in the wings, but a strained oblique has already taken the drama out of it. Drey Jameson, who has been kept warm in long relief, will get the first crack at the job. He has a fastball that pushes triple digits but was leaning all the more on his slider out of the bullpen, delivering some impressive whiff rates. There are some warts, such as shaky control and an inconsistent minor-league track record, but the upside is enough to roll the dice on him.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Moving into rotation

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced Sunday that Jameson is moving into the starting rotation while Zach Davies (oblique) is on the injured list, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. Jameson has been effective out of the bullpen for the Diamondbacks thus far with a 2.16 ERA and 8:5 K:BB over 8.1 innings in three appearances. The right-hander has worked at least two innings in each of his outings -- including four against the Dodgers on March 31 -- and he should be stretched out after competing for the fifth starter spot in the Cactus League. If Jameson pitches well over his first few outings he has a good chance to stay in the rotation even after Davies is ready to return. If the 25-year-old were to struggle, the Diamondbacks could turn to top prospect Brandon Pfaadt in the coming weeks.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Earns two-inning save

Jameson picked up the save Tuesday against San Diego. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two over two innings. He lost the battle for the final rotation spot to Ryne Nelson, but Jameson is having a great opening week regardless as he grabbed his first win of 2023 on Friday and now has his first career save to go with it. The back end of the Arizona bullpen has been shaky early on and Jameson, a top 10 prospect in the organization, could quickly emerge as a go-to option in high leverage. He could also stretch back out into a starter's role at some point.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Fans seven Thursday

Jameson allowed four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out seven over 4.1 innings in Thursday's split-squad start against the Dodgers. Jameson gave up three runs in the first inning, then got a ton of run support -- 10, in fact -- during the bottom half of the inning. He settled in after that, although he dealt with base runners in four of the five innings he worked. Jameson's competition for the No. 5 starter job, Ryne Nelson, pitched in the other split-squad game and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Cubs. Neither pitcher has a statistical advantage in the job battle, which looks like it will go down to the wire.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Logs two scoreless innings

Jameson allowed a hit and a walk over two scoreless innings in Saturday's spring game against Oakland. Jameson and Ryne Nelson, the two leading candidates for Arizona's fifth-starter job, started split-squad contests Saturday. After round one, Jameson has the edge, as Nelson was knocked around by the Rockies for four runs in one-plus innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Starting in split squad matchup

Jameson will start on the mound for Arizona in Saturday's split-squad game against Oakland, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. Jameson turned a few heads in his brief major-league stint last season, posting a 1.48 ERA and 1.11 WHIP through 24.1 frames in four starts. He's one of the primary candidates for the fifth spot in Arizona's rotation alongside Ryne Nelson, who will start in the D-backs' other split-squad matchup Saturday against Colorado.
