Nelson was called up by the Phillies for the final game of the regular season last year and allowed one run over 5.1 innings, but he's set to begin 2024 at Triple-A after he posted a 6.23 ERA during spring training. The right-hander had a 4.35 ERA in 20 starts for Lehigh Valley in 2023 and may need a better showing in 2024 to have a chance of being called up.

Nelson (1-0) allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over 5.1 innings to earn the win over the Mets on Sunday.
Nelson handled a bulk assignment after Matt Strahm opened the game with a perfect first inning. The only run on Nelson's line was a Tim Locastro solo home run in the third inning. Nelson (hamstring) was activated from the injured list Friday at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Tom Housenick of The Morning Call reports.
Nelson is serving as the starting pitcher for Lehigh Valley on Friday night against the Triple-A affiliate of the Mets. He wound up missing nearly a full month of action due to a left hamstring strain -- his second left hamstring strain of 2023. The 27-year-old has posted a 1.25 ERA in 21.2 minor-league innings this season when healthy.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Nelson suffered a left hamstring injury during his start Saturday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
Nelson previously opened the season on the Phillies' injured list due to a left hamstring strain before he was activated May 4 and optioned to the minors. After making three consecutive outings for Double-A Reading, Nelson moved into the Triple-A rotation Saturday and gave up one run over four innings, but the hamstring issue resulted in his day ending early. The extent of Nelson's injury isn't yet known, but it wouldn't be surprising if he was forced to miss at least one turn through Lehigh Valley's rotation.

Nelson has made all but four of his 69 career MLB appearances as a reliever, but the Phillies have been getting him stretched out a starter since he began his rehab assignment April 18. He's scheduled to make another rehab start Sunday, likely with either Reading or Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Phillies don't have a rotation spot available for him at the moment, so Nelson will likely be optioned to Triple-A once his 30-day rehab window closes and he's officially activated from the 15-day injured list.
