Player Outlook
A 19th-round pick out of Virginia Tech in 2019, Kerry Carpenter bucked the odds by even reaching the majors. He continued to surprise in 2023 with 20 home runs, six steals and a 121 wRC+ in 459 plate appearances. The last of those 20 homers came Aug. 23 -- Carpenter went 34 games without a long ball to finish the season, slashing just .256/.313/.308 in that stretch. In addition to that disturbing trend, Carpenter managed just a .657 OPS against left-handed pitching for the season, leaving open the possibility for a strict platoon role. His overall body of work was impressive enough for Carpenter to project as a regular in Detroit between the corner outfield and DH, but it's understandable to still be skeptical, especially with the way last season ended for him. HIs home park does him no favors.

  • Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: Blasts third home run

Carpenter went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Rangers. Carpenter has been playing well lately, recording a .321 batting average and four extra-base hits across his last 10 games. While he generally sits against southpaws, Carpenter feasts on righties, and that should allow him to remain a solid fantasy asset moving forward. The 26-year-old broke out last year with 20 home runs, 64 RBI and an .811 OPS, and he could surpass all of those numbers in 2024.

  • Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: Doubles, triples in Tuesday's win

Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and an RBI in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Rangers. Carpenter was productive for Detroit, delivering his first triple and third double of the season while boosting his OPS to a robust .920. He was swapped out for pinch-hitter Matt Vierling in the eighth inning when Texas brought in a lefty reliever, and Carpenter's main limitation at this point is his lack of production against southpaws. He had a .657 OPS against them last season, compared to an .841 mark against righties, and the team has limited him to just two at-bats against lefties so far this year. Against righties, however, Carpenter is a potent offensive weapon.

Carpenter continues to crush righties to the tune of a .911 OPS this year, while he's only had two hitless at-bats against southpaws. Expect him to start most days moving forward except when a lefty is on the mound for the opponent.

  • Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: Pops 16th home run

Carpenter went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 8-7 win over the Twins. Carpenter has been dialed in lately, as he's batting .412 over his last five games with four home runs. That's pushed the outfielder to 16 long balls for the season, which is 10 more than he had as a rookie last year. Carpenter has definitely taken a step forward after a promising debut in 2022, and he could be in line for an even bigger breakout in 2024.

  • Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: Possible waiver wire pickups

Carpenter's stock continues to rise in Fantasy faster than his roster rate can keep up. With a three-homer weekend, including one off left-hander Chris Sale, he's up to 15 for the season and 21 in just 106 games as a major-leaguer (this after hitting 30 in 98 games as a minor-leaguer last year). The home run off a lefty is notable because he's now started against five of the past six the Tigers have faced, ending his platoon concerns from earlier in the year. He's striking out at just a 22 percent rate, which helps contribute to his 75th percentile xBA and 84th percentile xSLG. He's held back by his lineup and supporting cast, sure, but he's coming off a 34.5-point week and is now probably worth a look even in some three-outfielder leagues.
