Player Outlook
After getting traded from Atlanta to Boston this offseason for Chris Sale, Vaughn Grissom should finally get to be an everyday second baseman in the big leagues. Grissom, 23, boasts a career .320/.407/.477 batting line in 1,474 minor-league plate appearances but was blocked at second base in Atlanta and not seen as a competent enough defensive shortstop to get regular work there. He is a career .287 hitter in the majors (.348 BABIP) and has five homers and five steals in 236 plate appearances. Grissom could push for a 15/15 season with excellent health, but the main selling point is the batting average floor - projection system Steamer has Grissom hitting .285 this year. He will be playing half his games in the second-best hitter's park, per Statcast's three-year rolling average. However, Fenway Park plays neutral for righty homers, as it's the second-best doubles park for righties due to the Green Monster. Grissom may lead off against lefties, but he could hit in the bottom third of the lineup against righties.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Activation this weekend unlikely

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Grissom (hamstring) is getting close to being activated but is unlikely to be back this weekend, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Grissom has played six rehab games with Triple-A Worcester, and he was at second base for the last three of them. The Red Sox have an off day Monday before beginning a series with the Giants at home Tuesday, and that could be the day the club is targeting for Grissom's season and team debut.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Begins playing 2B on rehab

Grissom (hamstring) played second base for the first time Friday while on his rehab assignment, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. He went 1-for-3 with a double and made a nice backhand play on a ball hit up the middle. Grissom, who began his assignment April 12, served as the designated hitter for three games before moving to the field Friday. He followed up in the field for a second consecutive day Saturday. Grissom is trending in the right direction, but the Red Sox are not going to rush him. He's learning a new position, and manager Alex Cora wants him to build up reps at second base.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Makes first rehab appearance

Grissom (groin/hamstring) went 0-for-3 as the designated hitter for Triple-A Worcester on Friday. Grissom kicked off a rehab assignment with the WooSox, serving as the DH for seven innings. The organization will want to see him play the field for a full nine innings and on back-to-back days before activating him from the 10-day injured list. He may not be the answer for Boston's shoddy infield defense, which has been on display since the team returned home following a successful season-opening road trip, but Grissom is expected to be an everyday member of the lineup once healthy.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Starting rehab assignment Friday

Grissom (groin/hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. It had been reported previously that Grissom would start playing in rehab games sometime this weekend, and now it's been revealed that Friday is the day. The infielder missed all of spring training with hamstring and groin issues but is now ready for game action and figures to be back before the end of the month if all goes well. The plan is for Grissom to be Boston's everyday second baseman once fully ramped up, although the club hasn't ruled out using him some at shortstop since Trevor Story (shoulder) is out for the year.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Placed on IL

The Red Sox placed Grissom (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list Thursday. The transaction is retroactive to Monday, but Grissom won't be ready to come off the IL once his 10 days are up. The 23-year-old infielder will need more time to build back up after missing most of spring training due to the right hamstring strain, as well as a minor groin injury that delayed his recovery. According to MLB.com, manager Alex Cora said Sunday that Grissom is about 7-to-10 days away from seeing game action in any form, so he could be ready to begin a rehab assignment at some point next week.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Progressing with BP

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that Grissom (groin) is taking batting practice outside and could see game action in 7-to-10 days, Mike Monaco of ESPN reports. Grissom hasn't played in any games during spring training due to the groin strain, so he'll begin the season on the injured list and continue to build up at the Red Sox's spring complex. The 23-year-old should be ready to join the big club before the end of April.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Remains unlikely for Opening Day

Grissom remains unlikely to be ready for Opening Day, but his left groin strain is not considered a long-term injury, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Grissom has yet to play this spring because of hamstring and groin problems. It's not clear when he might be ready for game action, but the Red Sox are optimistic his impending stay on the injured list will be a short one. Enmanuel Valdez is in line to handle second base duties while Grissom is sidelined.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Hopes for Grapefruit debut Sunday

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that he hopes Grissom (hamstring) is ready to make his Grapefruit League debut Sunday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Grissom has been slowed by a hamstring issue in the early days of camp but appears to have made progress. Assuming he debuts soon, the 23-year-old will have plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day and is projected to serve as the Red Sox's primary second baseman this season.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Not yet finished product

Boston manager Alex Cora believes there's potential for Grissom to add power to his game, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. "We do believe the stronger he gets, mechanics-wise, there's a few things sequencing-wise, that (hitting coach) Pete (Fatse) has recognized," Cora said. "If we can get that, we're going to have the final product." The 23-year-old Grissom, who is listed at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, will have the opportunity for consistent playing time, which could improve all aspects of his game. The Red Sox are banking on him being their everyday second baseman, presenting an opportunity for consistent plate appearances he never had on a deep Atlanta roster. In addition to the experience gained facing MLB pitching, the innings in the field should help him develop defensively, where Grissom is considered average at best.

  • Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Dealt to Boston

Atlanta traded Grissom to the Red Sox on Saturday in exchange for Chris Sale and cash considerations, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Grissom has shown plenty of upside at the plate to begin his MLB career, slashing .287/.339/.407 with five homers and 27 RBI across 236 plate appearances. However, defensive struggles and a myriad of talent on Atlanta's roster kept Grissom from seeing consistent playing time. Now in Boston, the 22-year-old infielder will have a clearer path to regular at-bats, though he may receive competition from Enmanuel Valdez.

  • Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Could platoon with Kelenic

Grissom could platoon in left field with Jarred Kelenic while also serving as Atlanta's top reserve infielder, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Atlanta wants to get Grissom's bat in the lineup, but it just needs to find a spot for him. He is playing left field in the Puerto Rican Winter League beginning this month, and it seems like he and the lefty-hitting Kelenic will be legitimately competing for at-bats this season. General manager Alex Anthopoulos told reporters Sunday that Kelenic's arrival from Seattle signals an end to their left-field pursuits this winter. If any of Atlanta's infielders get injured, the righty-hitting Grissom could step into more playing time.

  • Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Will be on NLDS roster

Grissom will be part of Atlanta's roster for the NLDS against the Phillies, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Grissom posted a weak .659 OPS over 80 major-league plate appearances during the regular season, but he had a .921 OPS in 468 plate appearances with Triple-A Gwinnett. The talented 22-year-old infielder can function as a useful pinch runner, bench bat and possible defensive replacement in Atlanta's best-of-five NLDS matchup versus Philadelphia.

  • Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Returns from MiLB IL

Grissom (hip) was activated from the 7-day injured list Thursday, per the MiLB's transactions log. Grissom ended up on the injured list Sept. 11 due to a right hip injury, but it ended up being a short absence for the second baseman. He's slashing .332/.421/.505 with eight homers, 60 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 72 runs scored over 96 minor-league contests so far this year.

  • Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Lands on Triple-A injured list

Triple-A Gwinnett placed Grissom on its 7-day injured list Tuesday with a right hip injury, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. With the big-league active roster expanding to 28 men in September, Grissom would have been a candidate to return to Atlanta at some point during the final month of the season, but the hip injury could end up thwarting those plans. After a promising showing in his first taste of the majors in the second half of last season, Grissom missed out on a spot on Atlanta's Opening Day roster and has logged just 80 plate appearances in the big leagues in 2023.

  • Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Headed back to minors

Grissom was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Grissom made just two starts after taking Ozzie Albies' spot on the roster when the latter landed on the injured list with a hamstring strain. With Albies now back in the fold, Grissom will return to Gwinnett to play regularly.

  • Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Rests for second doubleheader game

Grissom is out of the lineup for the second game of Monday's doubleheader with the Mets. Grissom will get a breather after he went 1-for-4 and committed a throwing error in Atlanta's 9-8 win in the opening game of the day. Ehire Adrianza will fill in for Grissom at shortstop, ending the latter's streak of five consecutive starts.

  • Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Sits after lackluster run of starts

Grissom is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins. For the first time since being called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on April 14 in the wake of top shortstop Orlando Arcia (wrist) landing on the injured list, Grissom will get a day off. Ehire Adrianza will fill in at shortstop in place of Grissom, who slashed .273/.314/.303 with one extra-base hit (a double) and no stolen bases during his nine-game run in the starting lineup.

  • Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Possible waiver wire pickups

Before you turn to Zach Neto to meet your unexpected shortstop need, make sure Vaughn Grissom isn't rostered already. We've already seen him deliver at the major-league level, after all, batting .291 (41 for 141) with five homers, five steals and a .792 OPS down the stretch last season. True, he doesn't have eligibility at shortstop yet, but he's started the past three games there for the Braves, filling in for an injured Orlando Arcia, and should pick it up by the end of the week. The 22-year-old was considered the favorite for the starting shortstop job coming into spring training and may run with it now, giving you a dual-eligible middle infielder who'll help in batting average while making reasonable contributions in home runs and stolen bases.

  • Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Starting at shortstop Friday

Grissom is starting at shortstop and batting seventh Friday at Kansas City. Grissom was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday morning and has an opportunity to take over as Atlanta's everyday shortstop with Orlando Arcia (wrist) hitting the injured list in a corresponding move. Grissom was off to a tremendous start this season in the International League, slashing .366/.458/.585 with one home run and two stolen bases through 10 games. The 22-year-old offers category-spanning fantasy upside.

  • Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Recalled from Triple-A

Grissom was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett by Atlanta on Friday. The 22-year-old is set to take over as Atlanta's everyday shortstop with Orlando Arcia (wrist) landing on the injured list. Grissom has crushed it at Gwinnett this season, slashing .366/.458/.585 with one homer, two stolen bases and a 6:4 BB:K. His glove remains a work in progress, but he showed his fantasy upside last season and should be picked up in most leagues where he's still available.
