    Smith (undisclosed) will not play in Friday's Summer League game against the Nuggets,Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. Miami will be without most of their regulars Friday evening as they give some other players a look. Smith earned a two-way contract with the Heat over the summer and is likely to be a featured player in the G League during 2023-24.

  • Heat's Dru Smith: Signs two-way deal with Heat

    The Heat signed Smith to a two-way contract Saturday, Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reports. Smith played for the Heat in the beginning of 2022-23 before being waived and picked up by Brooklyn. In 15 appearances between the Nets and Heat last season, he averaged 2.9 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 10.5 minutes. Smith will split time between the NBA and G League in 2023-24.

With trades and injuries having tested the Nets' depth of late, Smith has assumed backup point guard duties for the NBA team the past two games after he had played exclusively in the G League since inking a two-way deal with Brooklyn on Jan. 13. Though Smith averaged a respectable 3.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in 12.5 minutes behind back-to-back losses to the Clippers and Suns, he'll presumably be headed out of the NBA rotation and back to the Long Island Nets if the newly acquired Spencer Dinwiddie is available to pay Thursday against the Bulls.

Smith had been playing for Miami's G League affiliate -- the Sioux Falls Skyforce -- this season and averaged 17.8 points in 33.8 minutes across 15 appearances. He made five appearances with the Heat during that stretch, posting 2.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 13.4 minutes per game. Smith figures to report to the Long Island Nets after signing the deal, but he could get an NBA look soon, as Brooklyn continues to target depth contributors with Kevin Durant (knee) sidelined.
