Mason Foster: Cut by Washington
The Redskins are cutting Foster, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Foster recorded 131 tackles (81 solo), two interceptions and one sack last season, logging 1,014 defensive snaps as a 16-game starter. His struggles in coverage may have inspired this decision, with Washington turning to younger alternatives -- Shaun Dion Hamilton, Josh Harvey-Clemons, Jon Bostic, Cole Holcomb -- to compete for playing time at inside linebacker. The group should produce at least one player with IDP utility, as fellow inside 'backer Reuben Foster (knee) will miss the entire season.

Redskins' Mason Foster: Compiles 133 tackles
Foster was a 16-game starter in 2018, piling up a team-high 133 tackles while playing 98.2 percent of the Redskins' defensive snaps.
Foster added two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a sack, but he's a tackle compiler more so than a true playmaker at inside linebacker. He should be back in 2019 for the second season of a two-year, $4 million contract, but it won't come as a huge surprise if Washington tries to find a replacement for his every-down role, potentially seeking a linebacker with better coverage skills.

Redskins' Mason Foster: Logs first sack of 2018
Foster tallied nine tackles (four solo), one sack, and one pass breakup during Saturday's loss to Tennessee.
Foster arguably put together his best performance of the season, despite not getting to double-digit tackles like he's done on six occasions in 2018. However, he's recorded just 2.5 sacks over the past five seasons and has gotten his hands on just four passes this year, so don't expect another multi-category stat line when the Redskins take on the Eagles in Week 17.

Redskins' Mason Foster: Picks off second pass
Foster recorded six tackles (four solo) and an interception during Sunday's 40-16 loss to the Giants.
While Eli Manning diced up the Redskins defense for three touchdowns on just 14 completions, it wasn't until he was replaced by backup Kyle Lauletta that Washington was able to look halfway decent on the defensive end. Foster picked off Lauletta to earn his second interception of the year, both of which have come in the last four weeks. The Redskins will look to get back on track against the Jaguars on Sunday.

Foster and the Redskins' defense played the ultimate bend-but-don't break defense, holding the Buccaneers to just three points despite giving up a whopping 501 yards. Foster has now recorded 22 tackles over the past two weeks. As long as he can continue producing at the level he has the past couple of weeks, he'll be a viable IDP option. He'll have a week off due to the Redskins' bye before returning for a Monday night matchup with New Orleans in Week 5.

Redskins' Mason Foster: Double-digit tackles in win
Foster logged 11 tackles (eight solo) and one pass defensed across 60 defensive snaps in Sunday's loss to the Colts.
Foster was all over the field Sunday, leading the team in tackles and playing 98 percent of the defensive snaps. However, his big play of the game came in the second quarter, when he deflected an Andrew Luck pass that was intercepted by D.J. Swearinger. Foster's increased snap count in Week 2 will help to boost his IDP value, especially if he can consistently produce at the same level.

Foster had five tackles (three solo) in Sunday's 24-6 win over Arizona, playing 37 of 53 defensive snaps.
If Week 1 is any indication, the Washington linebacking corps could be a disappointment in terms of IDP value. The team took Foster and Zach Brown off the field in some passing situations, using Josh Harvey-Clemons and Zach Vigil instead. Foster isn't a recommended IDP option for Week 2 against the Colts.

Foster has been playing through a torn labrum and will likely undergo surgery in the near future. Martell Spaight and Will Compton should both see increased workloads at inside linebacker with Foster officially out on injured reserve.

Foster will have surgery to repair a torn labrum and is expected to be placed on injured reserve, Master Tesfatsion of The Washington Post reports.
Foster has been playing on the torn labrum, but it appears as though the pain ultimately became too much to manage. The linebacker will undergo what is believed to be season-ending surgery in order to prevent any further damage. Both Will Compton and Martrell Spaight are expected to take on additional snaps at inside linebacker in Foster's absence.

Foster earned the questionable tag after putting in limited practice sessions this week but will give it a go Monday. The 28-year-old looked good in his return to action in Week 6 and had the team's bye week to further recuperate from a Week 2 shoulder dislocation.
