Jets' Randall Cobb: Signing with New York official

The Jets officially signed Cobb (ankle) to a one-year contract Wednesday, Randy Lange of the team's official site reports.
Aaron Rodgers now has a pair of familiar faces in New York's receiving corps in the form of Cobb and Allen Lazard as the quarterback makes his transition from Green Bay. In addition to reuniting with Rodgers, Cobb will also join one of his former offensive coordinators in Green Bay in Nathaniel Hackett. Cobb is coming off a 2022 campaign in which he put together a 34-417-1 receiving line on 50 targets in 13 games. Cobb currently is in recovery mode from offseason ankle surgery, but his experience with Rodgers should allow him to hit the ground running once he's back to full health.

Cobb won't have an easy path to playing time while the Jets have all of Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Corey Davis and Mecole Hardman on hand at receiver, but his addition could be an indication that New York envisions more changes to come to the receiving room. Davis, in particular, has been regularly mentioned in trade rumors this offseason. Cobb is coming off ankle surgery, but his familiarity with Rodgers means he shouldn't require as many practice reps to acclimate to a depth role in the Jets offense.

Cobb recently underwent ankle surgery, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
The surgery was to "clean out the back of his ankle," according to Rapoport. The 32-year-old Cobb caught 34 passes for 417 yards and one touchdown on 50 targets across 13 games for the Packers last season. He's scheduled to be a free agent later this month. It's unclear at this point if Cobb plans to keep playing in 2023.

For the third day in a row, Cobb's practice reps were capped while he continued to battle the ailment, but he must have shown enough progress as the week went along for the Packers to sign off on him playing Sunday. The fact that Cobb appeared on the Packers' Week 12 injury report with only the illness attached to his name is at least a sign that he avoided any setbacks with his right ankle in his return to action in the team's Week 11 loss to the Titans. The Packers didn't bother easing Cobb back in with a light role against Tennessee, as he played a healthy 56 percent of the snaps of offense and finished with six receptions for 73 yards on six targets in his return from a four-game absence.
