Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Could be in third-down mix
Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears indicated that Montgomery, who was limited to one game last season due to a shoulder injury, has moved past the issue, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports.
Prior to suffering his injury in the team's 2022 season opener, Montgomery appeared poised to handle a third-down role behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Damien Harris (who's now with the Bills). Now that he's healthy again, Montgomery will have a chance to compete for a change-of-pace role behind Stevenson, while James Robinson, Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor also are in the mix to handle complementary backfield touches. If the versatile Montgomery emerges as a key third-down option, a role Fears believes that the 30-year-old has a chance to claim, the 6-foot, 216-pounder could merit fantasy attention in deeper PPR formats this coming season.

Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Gets shoulder surgery, done for 2022
Montgomery (knee) will miss the remainder of the season after recently undergoing shoulder surgery, Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reports.
Montgomery was placed on injured reserve after playing 19 snaps in the team's season-opening loss to the Dolphins. The Patriots haven't provided many updates on his status since then, but Montgomery looks like he'll spend the remainder of the season rehabbing from the shoulder procedure. Montgomery will be due $1.36 million in 2023 and should compete for a change-of-pace role within the New England backfield next offseason, if healthy.

Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Unlikely to return in Week 6
Montgomery (knee) is not expected to be activated from injured reserve this week, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
Montgomery was placed on IR with a right knee injury Sept. 13 following the Patriots' Week 1 loss to the Dolphins, but head coach Bill Belichick doesn't expect the running back to return in Week 6. With Damien Harris (hamstring) potentially unavailable for New England's upcoming matchup with the Browns, Pierre Strong, J.J. Taylor and Kevin Harris could see increased roles behind Rhamondre Stevenson.
