Griff Whalen: Reaches four-week injury settlement
Whalen (toe) reached a four-week injury settlement with the Raiders on Thursday, Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
While eligible to sign elsewhere at the moment, the settlement will allow Whalen to re-sign with the Raiders following the conclusion of Week 4. Prior to landing on injured reserve, Oakland was hopeful Whalen could be of service in the slot.

Griff Whalen: Sent to waivers with injury settlement
The Raiders waived Whalen (toe) after reaching an injury settlement Tuesday, Doug Williams of NBC Bay Area reports.
Whalen was placed on injured reserve Monday, so the settlement came quickly. He was climbing up the wideout ranks at the time of his release, so he has a shot at a depth role with another team once he's healthy.

It took to about mid-August for the Raiders to pen Whalen ahead of Ryan Switzer on the depth chart and the team seemed confident in Whalen's abilities as a slot receiver prior to the toe injury. There's a chance Oakland will look to bring Whalen back mid-season following an injury settlement, but in the short-term it looks like Whalen's promising offseason will be lost.

Whalen (toe) isn't expected to play the season opener against the Rams, Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
Gehlken added that Whalen passed Ryan Switzer in the pecking order before Switzer was traded to the Steelers. However, Whalen may have lost his chance at return man duties to Dwayne Harris. Without that job in hand, Whalen will work as a gunner on special teams with minimal offensive impact.

Raiders' Griff Whalen: Exits locker room Friday in walking boot
Whalen exited the locker room following Friday's preseason game sporting a walking boot, Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
According to Gehlken, Whalen was later determined to have suffered a toe injury during Friday's contest. Thankfully, X-rays came back negative and the receiver was able to walk effectively in the protective boot. Whalen has been working ahead of Ryan Switzer in the slot during training camp, but if the former misses extended action, expect Switzer to gain additional snaps with the first team offense.

Whalen has been working ahead of Ryan Switzer in the slot during training camp, Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
Head coach John Gruden said Whalen and Switzer were "neck-and-neck" in the competition for the slot, but it looks like Whalen has a legitimate shot at landing a starting role after signing with the team in March. Special teams production will likely play a role in who gets the spot, as both Whalen and Switzer have excelled as return men. Additionally, Seth Roberts' return from an undisclosed injury adds another element to the competition.

His release likely comes as a result of the Ravens' receiving corps nearing full health, as It has been plagued with injuries all season.

Ravens' Griff Whalen: Big role in 2017 debut
Whalen made his 2017 debut Sunday, catching four of six targets for 23 yards in a 24-16 loss to the Vikings.
Recently signed for depth, Whalen saw plenty of action Sunday with Mike Wallace exiting the game with a concussion and Breshad Perriman (concussion) and Jeremy Maclin (shoulder) sitting due to injury. Whalen played 58 of a possible 65 snaps and was efficient in catching the ball. His four catches for 23 yards in one game are just shy of Perriman's four catches for 26 yards on 18 targets through six games. If Baltimore's receiving corps is still banged up Thursday, Whalen could find himself playing plenty of snaps once again.

Whalen will re-sign with the Ravens on Thursday, Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Whalen failed to make the Ravens' 53-man roster out of training camp, but with the injury bug hitting Baltimore's receiving corps -- Mike Wallace (back), Jeremy Maclin (concussion) and Breshad Perriman (concussion) all were held out of Wednesday's practice -- there's an obvious need for depth at the position. Even if all three of those players sit out Sunday's game against the Vikings, however, Whalen won't offer much fantasy intrigue in a Ravens offense that has struggled to generate production through the air even in times of better health.

With the roster cutdown deadline looming for Saturday, the Ravens began trimming down following their final preseason game. Whalen, who signed before training camp to compete for a role in the return game, had a minimal impact during the preseason. He hauled in one reception for five yards in his final tuneup Thursday against the Saints. Still, Whalen is just 27 years old and could offer some utility to a team looking to bolster its special-teams units.
