Broncos' Samaje Perine: May have significant role in Denver

Perine could see his most substantial workload of his career this season, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports.
Perine was signed by the Broncos this offseason due to the uncertainty of starter Javonte Williams' availability heading into the 2023 campaign. Though Denver appears to be optimistic that Williams could be ready for the start of training camp, it seems Perine is viewed by the Broncos coaching staff as more than just a backup plan. In discussing the veteran's signing, head coach Sean Payton indicated that "this is a guy that gave us flexibility. We signed him because we knew he was durable and reliable." Payton added, "I was taught a long time ago to stack them up at that position." Perine's potential for a higher usage rate should not come as much of a surprise, as Payton has a long history of using multiple running backs throughout his tenure as head coach of the Saints. According to Kosmider, "the Saints' second-leading rusher had more than 95 carries 11 times" in his 15 seasons with New Orleans. It appears the 27-year-old should have every opportunity to build upon the 4.4 yards per carry he averaged in his last three seasons with the Bengals, regardless of when Williams returns to the field.

Broncos' Samaje Perine: Joining Denver backfield

Perine agreed to a two-year, $7.5 million contract with the Broncos on Tuesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Per the report, the deal includes another $1 million in incentives. After having backed up Joe Mixon in Cincinnati, Perine is poised to join a Denver backfield that also includes 2021 second-round selection Javonte Williams (knee), who spent most of the past season on injured reserve while recovering from ACL surgery. If Williams endures any complications in his recovery that threatens his available for the start of the 2023 season, Perine will be a candidate to see a significant share of the backfield touches out of the gate for the Broncos.

Bengals' Samaje Perine: Scores in possible Cincy finale

Perine rushed five times for 22 yards and a touchdown while catching three of four targets for four yards in Sunday's 23-20 AFC Championship Game loss to the Chiefs.
Joe Burrow led the Bengals with 30 rushing yards on four attempts, but Perine was more effective than Joe Mixon, who mustered only 19 yards on eight carries. Perine tied the score at 20-20 with a two-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. That touchdown could prove to be his last with the Bengals, as Perine will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Perine will cede starting running back duties to Joe Mixon in Sunday's game against the Browns after the latter practiced fully Wednesday and cleared the NFL's concussion protocol, but Perine may have earned a larger role than he previously held after excelling as a replacement for Mixon over the past two games, James Palmer of NFL Network reports.
According to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, head coach Zac Taylor already confirmed Wednesday that Mixon would reclaim the starting role, even though Perine amassed 248 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown on 48 touches (38 carries, 10 catches) over the previous two weeks while helping the Bengals knock off likely playoff teams in the Titans and Chiefs. Before exiting early in the Bengals' Week 11 win over the Steelers, Mixon had played more than two-thirds of the snaps in each of the team's first nine contests, but it's possible a more even timeshare between him and Perine may be in place Sunday. Perine demonstrated over the last two games that he's capable of filling in on both early and passing downs while churning out yardage efficiently, making him a reliable fill-in option if Mixon should need a breather during a given possession. That said, Perine can't be counted on to see enough touches to make him a viable fantasy lineup option outside of deeper leagues now that Mixon is back in the picture.

Perine consistently converted first downs against the Chiefs, often breaking tackles in the process. About the only thing he didn't do was get into the end zone, instead seeing Chris Evans record the go-ahead receiving touchdown in the fourth quarter. Perine filled his usual role in the Week 5 loss to Baltimore, taking seven touches for 56 yards while playing 17 snaps off the bench behind Joe Mixon. His ability to practice in any capacity at the beginning of the week suggests Perine should be ready for a similar role this Sunday in New Orleans. If not, the Bengals can turn to Chris Evans to sub in for Mixon on third downs and give him the occasional breather on early downs.
