Eagles' Dallas Goedert: Focused on improving routes

Goedert has been spending more time with the Eagles wide receivers this spring to work on his routes and releases, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports reports.
The tight end said he started spending more time with the WRs last season and has continued with it during/after spring workouts. Goedert caught 79.7 percent of his targets last year and had career highs for catches and yards per game -- 4.6 for 58.5 -- but he missed five straight weeks with a shoulder injury and finished at 55/702/3, down from 56/830/4 in 15 games the year before. He could have a career year in 2023 without a significant increase in target share if the Philadelphia offense remains elite and Goedert simply has better luck with TDs and/or injuries. He remains the third option in the passing game, behind WRs A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith and potentially facing a bit more competition for short passes following the trade for RB D'Andre Swift.

Goedert concluded his postseason in strong fashion, and he tallied at least five receptions in all three games. Goedert checked in second in receptions and receiving yards to DeVonta Smith for the Eagles, and he was on the receiving end of a 16-yard touchdown toss from Jalen Hurts that opened the scoring on the night. In his return to action following a five-game absence due to a shoulder injury, Goedert didn't appear worse for wear, but he also ranked fifth in targets on the Eagles behind DeVonta Smith (12), A.J. Brown (eight), Quez Watkins (five) and Kenneth Gainwell (four). On a positive note for Goedert, though, no other Philly tight end was targeted, so he seems to have retaken full control of the position. Fun fact, Goedert's parents named him Dallas because his father is a Cowboys fan. It's good to have Goedert back after he's missed the past five games with a shoulder injury, and hopefully he can pick up where he left off when he scored at least 11 PPR points in six of his first eight games before getting hurt in Week 10. Jalen Hurts (shoulder) is likely out this week, but Goedert should do fine with Gardner Minshew. In their lone start together in Week 13 last year at the Jets, Goedert had six catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns on six targets. Goedert has top-10 potential now that he's back for the Eagles.

There's always trepidation in starting a player in his first game back from injured reserve, but Goedert should be in good shape coming back from a shoulder problem and not a lower-body problem. He's a huge target who won't run too far downfield, giving Minshew someone easy to lean on. The only tight ends I'd consider over Goedert are Travis Kelce, Evan Engram (weather permitting), Mark Andrews (quarterback permitting), Dalton Schultz and Dawson Knox (weather permitting).
