  • Cardinals' Budda Baker: Placed on injured reserve

Baker (hamstring) was placed on IR on Monday, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.

Baker injured his hamstring in practice Friday and missed the team's Week 2 loss to the Giants. He'll now be out until at least the team's Oct. 22 matchup against the Rams in Week 7. The news is certainly a blow to the Cardinals defense, which had been competitive up until a second-half collapse in Week 2. Andre Chachere should continue to draw the start at safety in Baker's absence.

  • Cardinals' Budda Baker: Not suiting up Sunday

Baker (hamstring) is listed as inactive Sunday against the Giants, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.

The Cardinals added Baker to the Week 2 injury report Friday, when he was limited by a hamstring issue and deemed questionable for this contest. The last-minute addition was a sign that he may not be available to Arizona's defense, and that has come to pass. The severity of Baker's health concern isn't known, but as long as he's sidelined, Jalen Thompson and K'Von Wallace will get the majority of the team's reps at safety.

  • Cardinals' Budda Baker: Questionable for Sunday

Baker (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game versus the Giants, Bob McManaman of The Arizona Republic reports.

The hamstring injury appears to be a new one for Baker, who practiced in full Wednesday and Thursday before being marked as a limited participant Friday. If he's forced to sit out in Week 2, K'Von Wallace could draw the start at safety in his place.

  • Cardinals' Budda Baker: Deal reworked

Baker, whose existing contract was reworked by the Cardinals on Thursday, received a $300,000 signing bonus and can earn up to an additional $2.4 million in bonuses and incentives this season, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.

Baker, who approaches the last two years of his four-year, $59 million contract, requested a trade in April after contract extension talks with the Cardinals broke down but opted to show up for mandatory minicamp in June. He earned his fifth Pro Bowl selection last year after recording 111 tackles, seven pass deflections, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 15 games. The added bonuses and incentives mean that Baker, a 2017 second-round pick, will once again help spearhead the Cardinals' defense heading into the 2023 season.

  • Cardinals' Budda Baker: Set to report for training camp

Baker, who requested a trade earlier this offseason, is expected to report for training camp Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Baker's offseason started off with a trade request in April. He has two years left on his four-year, $59 million contract extension from 2020 and is reportedly looking for a deal that would make him among one of the highest-paid safeties in the NFL. Baker was a captain for the Cardinals in 2022 and earned his fifth Pro Bowl selection after recording 111 tackles, seven pass deflections, two interceptions and one forced fumble in 15 games. Baker attended Arizona's mandatory minicamp in June and seems committed to participating in training camp, though the 2017 second-round pick could make another trade request should contract negotiations stall or the Cardinals' season starts off slow.

  • Cardinals' Budda Baker: Shows up for minicamp

Baker (shoulder) is present for mandatory minicamp after requesting a trade earlier this offseason, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.

It's unclear if Baker has walked back his trade request or is just making sure to avoid any fines by participating in the first "mandatory" team activities of the year. He's scheduled for non-guaranteed base salaries of $13.1 and $14.2 million in the final two years of his contract, and he presumably requested a trade due to frustration with talks toward an extension. The 27-year-old safety finished last year on injured reserve with a fractured shoulder, but he should be healthy by now and still hasn't ever missed more than two games in a season. Baker is one of the top fantasy options among defensive backs, coming off five straight seasons with 98 or more tackles and three in a row with multiple interceptions.
