    Smith-Williams (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday.

  • Commanders' James Smith-Williams: Has concussion check Saturday

Smith-Williams was evaluated for a head injury during Saturday's 37-20 loss at San Francisco.

In the wake of the Commanders' Week 14 bye, Smith-Williams was reported to be in the concussion protocol, but he followed an LP/FP/FP practice regiment during Week 15 prep and didn't have a designation ahead of last Sunday's game against the Giants. He proceed to play 61 percent of the defensive snaps in that contest, and he manned his typical role this Saturday until he seemingly aggravated the head injury on his third-quarter sack of Brock Purdy. If he sustained another head injury, Smith-Williams may be in danger of sitting out Washington's next game on Sunday, Jan. 1 versus the Browns.

Smith-Williams remains in concussion protocols, but he's expected to return to practice Wednesday or Thursday, Matthew Paras of The Washington Times reports.

Smith-Williams could technically return to practice in limited fashion, even if he hasn't fully completed all the steps in the league's concussion protocols, so it's unclear how close he is to gaining clearance. If he can, he should suit up Sunday against the Giants.

  • Commanders' James Smith-Williams: Listed as starter

Smith-Williams is listed as a starter on Washington's first depth chart of the regular season.

Smith-Williams replaces Chase Young, who is out for at least the first four games to finish up his rehab from an ACL injury. The former was a seventh-round pick in the 2020 draft and the latter taken second overall, but Williams did get some experience as a starter late last season after Young's injury, and had 19 tackles and 1.5 sacks in six starts. The 25-year-old hasn't done enough to warrant IDP interest and likely will move back to the bench later in the season.
