Coach Matt LaFleur noted at the Annual League Meeting on Tuesday that "it's going to be a progression" as the Packers move from Aaron Rodgers to Love at quarterback, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.
The expected trade of Rodgers from Green Bay to the Jets has yet to go through, but both LaFleur and GM Brian Gutekunst have relayed this week the Packers' intention to deal their long-time signal-caller. Aside from the pending transaction, the team also must make a decision on whether to pick up the fifth-year option on Love's rookie contract, which needs to happen by May 1. Since being selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Love hasn't gotten much in-game action with Rodgers leading the offense. In 10 appearances (one start), Love has completed 50 of 83 passes (60.2 percent) for 606 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Rodgers, who has been playing through a broken right thumb since Week 6, picked up another injury in last Sunday's loss to the Eagles, when he suffered a rib contusion. Though Love finished out the contest in place of the banged-up Rodgers, the third-year quarterback won't get the starting assignment Week 13 after Rodgers was able to practice in a limited fashion Thursday and Friday to ditch his injury designation heading into the weekend. The 4-8 Packers haven't ruled out the possibility of shutting Rodgers down once they're officially eliminated from playoff contention, so Love could have the chance to make some starts before season's end.

With Aaron Rodgers sitting out, it was Love who started the game and played the entirety of the first half. The 2020 first-round pick's night got off to an encouraging start when he connected with Romeo Doubs for a nifty 33-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline to answer an early 49ers field goal. However, Love then short-circuited each of the Packers' next three possessions with interceptions, all which came in San Francisco territory. Love did finish the night on a positive note when he helmed a nine-play, 75-yard march just before halftime that culminated in another 33-yard scoring toss, this time in conjunction with Danny Davis. Love could see another solid allotment of playing time in next Friday night's home exhibition battle against the Saints, even if Rodgers makes a brief appearance to start the game.

The 2020 first-round pick's prospects for his third year in Green Bay hinged entirely on Rodgers' decision, and with the back-to-back MVP now sticking around for the foreseeable future, Love's best-case scenario with the team that drafted him appears to be backup duties. On the other hand, the Packers still have significant salary cap issues to address, and Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Love could now be a legitimate trade chip. Being dealt to a quarterback-needy team such as the Broncos or Panthers would certainly be the best outcome for the 23-year-old's fantasy prospects. Love appeared in six games during the 2021 season and completed 36 of 62 passes for 411 yards. He registered two touchdowns and three interceptions and also ran 12 times for 27 yards.
Of Love's six appearances, two were simply to kneel out the clock, and two others were brief cameos late in games when the outcome already had been determined. He did play one full game against the Chiefs in Week 9 and played the second half of the Packers' Week 18 loss to the Lions, and he was unspectacular in those contests, completing just 56.9 percent of his passes and averaging 6.4 YPA. After seeing no snaps in his 2020 rookie campaign, the 2021 season essentially was Love's first as a pro. His prospects for 2022 will hinge significantly on whether or not fellow quarterback Aaron Rodgers remains with Green Bay. If Rodgers returns, Love is looking at another season in the backup role. If Rodgers does not, though, Love will be the favorite to take over as the Packers' starting quarterback.

Love completed 10 of 17 pass attempts for 134 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against Detroit on Sunday.
Love played off the bench and mostly with backups after Aaron Rodgers played with most of the starters. Love saw a lot of pressure and arguably was at minimal fault for one of his interceptions, which was tipped at the line and then again by his wide receiver before the defense snagged it, but his box score also benefited from a lot of yards after the catch on a 62-yard touchdown pass to tight end Josiah Deguara. It's disappointing that Love didn't produce any better, even if he was playing with Green Bay's backups, and he needs to get better at identifying pressure pre-snap so that he isn't so constantly caught by surprise after the snap. Love won't turn 24 until November and still has time to develop, but it's safe to say that the Packers wish he was farther along in that development than he appears to be at the moment.

Previously, the coach relayed starter Aaron Rodgers was unlikely to suit up in the preseason, and if Love is forced to sit out Saturday, LaFleur may have to adjust his plans with just one other quarterback (Kurt Benkert) on the roster.
