Vikings' Johnny Mundt: Re-signs with Minnesota
The Vikings agreed to terms with Mundt on Friday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Mundt seems to have found a home in Minnesota after spending the first four years of his career with the Rams. In his two seasons with the Vikings, the 29-year-old has appeared in 34 games and put up 312 receiving yards, catching 36 of his 44 targets. Expect Mundt to continue serving as a depth piece in Minnesota's tight end room in 2024.

Vikings' Johnny Mundt: Catches 17 passes for Minnesota
Mundt appeared in all 17 games during the 2023 season, catching 17 of 23 targets for 172 yards and one touchdown.
The targets and yards were new career bests for the 29-year-old veteran tight end. Mundt was mostly tasked with blocking duties on his 223 offensive snaps, but he did see extended pass-catching opportunities and playing time over the final two-and-a-half games of the season following T.J. Hockenson's season-ending torn ACL. Mundt posted 4-39-1 and 5-58-0 receiving lines on a combined 13 targets Weeks 17 and 18. He's scheduled to become a free agent in March after spending the last two seasons with the Vikings following five with the Rams.

Vikings' Johnny Mundt: Increased role in loss
Mundt had four receptions for 39 yards, including a six-yard touchdown, on seven targets in Sunday's loss to Green Bay.
Mundt saw an increased role in the passing game with T.J. Hockenson out for the season with a knee injury. While Josh Oliver started at tight end, Mundt played more snaps and went out on more routes. Mundt played on 41 of the offense's 53 snaps and went out on 32 routes, while Oliver logged 24 snaps and ran eight routes. The former's usage should make him a factor in the offense next week at Detroit regardless of who starts at QB for Minnesota.

Vikings' Johnny Mundt: Increased role with Hockenson hurt
Mundt had one reception for 23 yards on three targets in Sunday's 30-24 loss to Detroit.
Mundt played a season-high 22 snaps on offense as he got more playing time after T.J. Hockenson suffered a knee injury. Mundt and Josh Oliver could see increased targets if Hockenson and Jordan Addison (ankle) remain sidelined with injuries.

Mundt played five of the Vikings' 72 snaps on offense in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Raiders, finishing with one catch for four yards.
The reception was Mundt's sixth of the season and his first since Week 10. Mundt retains a regular role on special teams and typically gets a handful of snaps on offense in two-tight-end sets, but he's unlikely to see enough involvement in the passing game to attain fantasy relevance so long as T.J. Hockenson or Josh Oliver are available for a given game.

Vikings' Johnny Mundt: Just one catch so far this season
Mundt went without a target across seven snaps on offense Sunday in the Vikings' 19-13 win over the Bears.
Mundt recorded an 11-yard reception in the Vikings' Week 5 loss to the Chiefs for his first catch of the season, but quarterback Kirk Cousins didn't look the tight end's way during his limited time on the field Sunday. As the third-string option at the position who often serves as a blocker when he plays, Mundt is far removed from the fantasy radar.

Vikings' Johnny Mundt: Limited role on offense
Mundt played on five of the offense's 64 snaps in Sunday's loss to Tampa Bay and was not targeted in the passing game.
Mundt had 19 receptions on 21 targets for 140 yards and a touchdown last season, but he had a much more limited role with the acquisition of Josh Oliver to be the team's primary blocking tight end. Mundt won't be a factor in the passing game unless there are several injuries to the pass-catching corps.

Vikings' Johnny Mundt: Short-yardage receiver in 2022
Mundt caught 19 of 21 targets for 140 yards and a touchdown while playing in all 17 games during the 2022 regular season.
Mundt saw by far the most extensive playing time of his career after following Vikings first-year coach Kevin O'Connell to Minnesota this past offseason. The 28-year-old tight end also accumulated more receptions and receiving yards than he did over the first six seasons of his career with the Rams. Mundt still finished the season in a reserve role behind prolific receiving tight end T.J. Hockenson, who was acquired via trade from Detroit midway through the season. With 2019 second-round pick Irv Smith currently set to become a free agent this offseason, Mundt could be in line to serve as Minnesota's No. 2 tight end in 2023.

It was just Mundt's fifth target in his last three games (five receptions for seven yards during that stretch). He's been an afterthought in the passing game once Irv Smith got up to full speed after the first few games after a preseason thumb injury. However, Mundt could be pressed into a larger role with Smith now likely out several weeks with an ankle injury. Still, Mundt's role may not increase too much, as he's not seen as skilled as a receiver.
