Player Outlook
The Patriots selected Ryland in the fourth round of the NFL Draft from Maryland, and he will be the team's kicker following the trade of Nick Folk to Tennessee. Ryland could be a starting Fantasy kicker in all leagues. At Maryland in 2022, Ryland made 19 of 23 field goals and 39 of 40 PATs. The Patriots have averaged 34 made field goals and 37 made PATs over the past two seasons, and Ryland could be a sneaky option on Draft Day.

  • Patriots' Chad Ryland: Makes two of four FG tries Sunday

Ryland made two of his four field-goal attempts in Sunday's 15-10 win over the Jets. Ryland, who notched seven points in the contest, made field goals from 48 and 51 yards Sunday, with his misses coming from 48 and 57 yards. Per Zack Cox of NESN, windy and rainy conditions didn't help the rookie kicker's cause, with coach Bill Belichick giving Ryland a vote of confidence following the contest. "We need to have a cleaner operation," Belichick said of the team's Week 3 kicking game. "But I thought (Ryland) showed mental toughness coming back and making that kick in the third quarter after the one at the half that just wasn't a great operation. He did a good job for us."

  • Patriots' Chad Ryland: Five points in Week 2

Ryland made his only field-goal attempt (from 49 yards) in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Dolphins. Ryland also made both of his extra-point tries Sunday and now has a total of seven points through his first two games as a pro. As the season progresses there will be weeks where the 2023 fourth-rounder has more scoring opportunities, but for now Ryland is a speculative fantasy option.

  • Patriots' Chad Ryland: Two points in opener

Ryland made both of his extra-point tries in Sunday's season-opening 25-20 loss to the Eagles. With Nick Folk having been traded to the Titans at the end of August, Ryland is entrenched as the Patriots' kicker this season and will thus have plenty of weeks where he'll be called upon more. The 2023 fourth-rounder's next chance to log a field-goal attempt will arrive this coming weekend when the Patriots host the Dolphins.

  • Patriots' Chad Ryland: Competing with Nick Folk

Ryland connected on an extra-point try in Friday's 23-7 preseason loss to the Titans. As Tuesday's roster cut-downs approach, Ryland and veteran Nick Folk are still in the Patriots' kicker mix and remain in what coach Bill Belichick noted Friday was a "pretty tight competition," Mark Daniels of masslive.com reports. Given that the Patriots selected Ryland in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, it would be surprising to see him let go, but with both kickers having had "really good camps," per Belichick, the team has a tough decision to make at the position, with Daniels suggesting that both players making the initial cut is a possible outcome.

  • Patriots' Chad Ryland: Inks contract with New England

Ryland has agreed to terms with the Patriots, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. The report notes that Ryland's deal is on track to be a four-year $4.626 million pact. Though the Patriots still currently roster veteran Nick Folk, given the team traded up eight spots in order to select the Maryland product in the fourth round (112th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft, it's expected that New England will move forward this season with Ryland as the franchise's next kicker.
