  • Texans' John Metchie: Sidelined by hamstring strain

Metchie is recovering from a hamstring strain and hasn't been participating in offseason practices, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

A 2022 second-round pick, Metchie spent his rookie season on the reserve/non-football illness list after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia last July. He returned healthy for the beginning of Houston's offseason program in April, and the latest report suggests he should be fine for training camp later this summer. Assuming that's the case, Metchie will compete for WR snaps with Robert Woods, Nico Collins (foot), Noah Brown and Nathaniel Dell in a passing game expected to be helmed by 2023 second overall pick C.J. Stroud.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Back to full strength

GM Nick Caserio said Saturday that Metchie (illness) participated fully during Phase 1 of the Texans' offseason program, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.

Despite suffering a torn ACL on Dec. 4, 2021 at Alabama, Metchie was a second-round pick for Houston during the 2022 NFL Draft. There was an expectation that he'd be able to play last season, but his situation took another turn when he was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia in July, which kept him off the field entirely. Now that he's completed the initial activities of the offseason program, OTAs and mandatory minicamp are next up for Metchie in May and June before training camp begins in late July. With Brandin Cooks getting traded to the Cowboys in March, Robert Woods, Nico Collins (foot), Noah Brown and Metchie currently occupy the top spots on the team's wide receiver depth chart.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Will take part in offseason program

Head coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday that Metchie (illness) will be involved in the Texans' offseason program, Drew Dougherty of the team's official site reports.

The 22-year-old missed all of last season after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia in July, but Ryans recently noted that the young wideout is "doing fine" and continues to make progress. Ryans added that, for the time being, the Texans plan to "take it one day at a time" with Metchie "and see where he can grow and where he can be when the time comes." During his final season of college football with Alabama in 2021, Metchie caught 96 passes for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games. Houston selected the 5-foot-11, 187-pound wideout with the 44th overall pick in last year's draft.

  • Texans' John Metchie: May be ready for offseason program

Texans general manager Nick Caserio said Wednesday that Metchie (illness) could be ready to participate in the offseason program, Daniel Gotera of KHOU 11 Houston reports.

Metchie spent his entire rookie season on the reserve/non-football illness list after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia back in July, but he looks like he may be cleared to return to football activities as early as the start of offseason workouts. The 2022 second-round pick entered the NFL recovering from an ACL tear, but his knee injury wasn't expected to be an issue for last summer's training camp.

  • Texans' John Metchie: Moved to reserve/NFI

The Texans placed Metchie (knee/illness) on the reserve/non-football illness list Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
