Player Outlook
Young was handpicked by proven quarterback developer Frank Reich, and it's easy to see why. On game film, Young has it all - excellent ball placement, leadership, a quick release, arm talent to make all the throws, but most importantly, he throws with anticipation on a relatively consistent basis. Young's football IQ will hopefully outweigh his frame (5-foot-10, 204 pounds). Reich elevated Young to the QB1 role after the team's first few OTAs, which is an excellent indicator that he is well ahead of schedule from the mental standpoint and he makes for a better late-round gamble for your QB2 or a sleeper target in Superflex or two-QB leagues than the Derek Carrs and Desmond Ridders of the world. Young is worth a back-end first-round pick but more than likely an early second-round pick in rookie-only one-QB leagues. He should be grabbed within the top five in two-QB or Superflex formats.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Should be back Week 4 or 5

Young (ankle) won't play Sunday in Seattle but is expected back for Week 4 against Minnesota or Week 5 at Detroit, Augusta Stone of the Panthers' official site reports. Coach Frank Reich made it clear he doesn't expect Young to be out long, despite missing every practice the team held this week. Andy Dalton will start against the Seahawks this Sunday, which might actually be an upgrade for Carolina's pass catchers given the way Young has struggled so far. It's a two-game sample, to be fair, and Young will return to the starting job once he's healthy even if the offense looks better with Dalton at the helm the next week or two.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Won't play Sunday

Young (ankle) didn't participate in Friday's practice and has been ruled out for Sunday's road game against the Seahawks, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports. As a result, Andy Dalton will start at QB for the Panthers, with Jake Luton expected to be elevated from the practice squad to serve as the team's backup Week 3. Young will now target a potential return to action when Carolina plays Minnesota on Sunday, Oct. 1.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Likely to sit out Week 3

The Panthers announced that Young (ankle) is unlikely to play Sunday in Seattle after sitting out practices Wednesday and Thursday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports. Andy Dalton took reps with the first-team offense for the second day in a row and is trending toward the Week 3 start while Young nurses the ankle injury he picked up in the Panthers' 20-17 loss to the Saints on Monday. Carolina hasn't officially ruled Young out from suiting up Sunday, but even if he practices in some fashion Friday and avoids the inactive list, he may be available only in a backup capacity behind Dalton. Carolina signed Jake Luton to its practice squad Wednesday and would likely elevate him to the 53-man roster if Young isn't deemed fit to handle backup duties this weekend.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Missing another practice

Young (ankle) won't participate in Thursday's practice, David Newton of ESPN.com reports. Young is tending to an ankle issue in the aftermath of Monday's 20-17 loss to the Saints, but the severity of the injury remains unclear. The rookie signal-caller was estimated as a non-participant for Wednesday's walk-through practice and will now remain off the field Thursday while the Panthers reconvene for a more traditional practice. As Newton notes, Thursday's practice is a critical day in terms of installing the game plan for Sunday's game against Seattle, so Young's absence from the field likely hints that he's trending toward missing out on the start this weekend. Before ruling on his status for Week 3, the Panthers will wait and see what Young is able to do at practice Friday, if anything. If Young is ruled out for Sunday or is available only as an emergency backup, veteran Andy Dalton would receive the start under center.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Tending to ankle injury

Young didn't participate in Wednesday's walk-through practice due to an ankle injury. Young picked up the ankle injury during Monday's 20-17 loss to the Saints, and his status for Carolina's Week 3 matchup with the Seahawks looks uncertain at the moment. Head coach Frank Reich said that Thursday's practice will reveal more information about Young's status fort his weekend, according to Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site. Carolina has a capable veteran in Andy Dalton ready to step up under center if Young is forced to miss any time.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Uneven pro debut Sunday

Young completed 20 of 38 passes for 146 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and added three carries for 17 yards in the Panthers' 24-10 loss to the Falcons on Sunday. He also fumbled once but recovered. The rookie first overall pick naturally had the spotlight on him in the season-opening divisional matchup, and Young unsurprisingly delivered somewhat uneven results. The Falcons compressed the field significantly for Young, holding him to a meager 3.8 yards per attempt while also sacking him and picking him off two times apiece. The pair of interceptions led to 10 total points for Atlanta, while his one scoring toss went to tight end Hayden Hurst. Young did connect with eight different targets overall on the afternoon and was missing DJ Chark (hamstring), supporting the notion better days could soon be ahead. However, Young will run into another unenviable matchup in his second career start, as he'll take on a vaunted Saints defense that picked the Titans' Ryan Tannehill off three times Week 1.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Sit Quarterbacks in Superflex/2QB Leagues (Start/Sit)

I'm curious to see how Young does in his first NFL start, but this isn't going to be an easy matchup against the Falcons. Atlanta has revamped its defense, led by the addition of Jessie Bates at safety, and Young should have a tough first outing on the road. This game also has a projected over-under of just 39.5 points, and I wouldn't expect a lot of production in the passing game for Carolina. Keep Young on your bench, and hopefully better days are coming for the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Another quiet performance

Young completed three of six passes for 35 yards in Friday's preseason loss to the Giants. He added one rushing yard on one carry. The rookie led the Panthers to one field goal on his two drives before checking out of the game. Young hasn't posted big numbers in his first two exhibition appearances, but the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft remains on track to open the regular season as Carolina's starting QB. If there's a positive takeaway from Friday's effort, it's that Young completed passes to each of his top three wideouts -- DJ Chark, Adam Thielen and Jonathan Mingo -- on his one scoring drive as he works to build chemistry with the trio.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: In line to play Friday

Young and Carolina's starters are on track see some action in Friday's preseason game against the Giants, Schuyler Callihan of SI.com reports. As for how much work Young might see Friday, coach Frank Reich noted "probably similar to last game as far as play time. You know, plus or minus." In this past Saturday's 27-0 preseason loss to the Jets, Young started and logged 11 snaps, en route to completing four of six passes for 21 yards, before giving way to Matt Corral.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Disappointing debut

Young completed four of six passes for 21 yards in Saturday's 27-0 preseason loss to the Jets. Young didn't show much in his NFL debut, but Matt Corral didn't fare any better over the remainder of the game upon replacing Young after three drives. The first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft could see more extensive action in the team's second preseason game against the Giants, as Young and the rest of Carolina's new-look first-team offense try to gain confidence and chemistry ahead of the regular season.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Named No. 1 QB

Head coach Frank Reich named Young the Panthers' No. 1 quarterback on Wednesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports. Young, the top overall pick of April's draft, has worked with the first-team offense since the beginning of OTAs, and Reich has now confirmed that Carolina plans for him to start Week 1 against the Falcons over veteran backup Andy Dalton. The news doesn't come as much of a surprise, given that Young clearly represents the Panthers' future at under center and projects as a relatively NFL-ready rookie. Announcing Young as the starter early in camp and giving him plenty of first-team reps throughout the next month will give the Alabama product plenty of time to learn the playbook and build chemistry with wideouts Adam Thielen, DJ Chark, Terrace Marshall and Jonathan Mingo and tight end Hayden Hurst.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Works with first team

Young split first-team reps with Andy Dalton on the first day of OTAs, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports. Dalton took the initial reps, but he and Young ultimately split pass attempts evenly with the first-team offense. Earlier in May, coach Frank Reich stated that Young would work with backups to start OTAs, though it appears he's already scrapped that plan. While it will almost certainly take some time for the Panthers to make an official announcement as to their starting quarterback to begin the season, Young looks to be trending toward that role.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Opening OTAs with second unit

Panthers coach Frank Reich said Young will work with the second-team offense at the beginning of OTAs, Joseph Person of The Athletic reports. Given that Young was the No. 1 overall pick after two full seasons as an SEC starter, the real question is whether he'll be promoted to the first unit before the start of training camp or sometime later in the summer. It'll be surprising if Andy Dalton lasts beyond early-to-mid August with the first unit and shocking if Dalton gets the Week 1 start (absent an injury to the rookie). The strong probability of Young starting most or all of the season makes him relevant in superflex and two-QB leagues, but he's much less intriguing in single-QB redraft, as he didn't run much at Alabama and has mediocre receiving options in Carolina. The Panthers do at least have a promising offensive line, and they took WR Jonathan Mingo in the second round after signing RB Miles Sanders, TE Hayden Hurst and WRs Adam Thielen and DJ Chark earlier this offseason. The 5-foot-10 rookie thus figures to be mostly surrounded by competent players, though not particularly exciting ones at the skill positions.

  • Panthers' Bryce Young: Goes first overall to Carolina

The Panthers selected Young in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, first overall. There was plenty of intrigue as to which direction the Panthers would go after giving up a haul to move into the first overall slot. C.J. Stroud and even Will Levis were bandied about as legitimate candidates to go to Carolina, but the team landed on the decorated signal-caller out of Alabama. Young for his own part is a bit of a polarizing prospect. His production as a two-year starter was prolific, and the film shows him to be a decisive and accurate quarterback with next-level anticipation. That said, Young being a success in the NFL would be somewhat unprecedented. He's often compared to Kyler Murray in terms of stature, but while Murray was a prolific runner at Oklahoma, that wasn't much of a calling card for Young (185 total rushing yards in two seasons as the starter). At 5-foot-10 and 204 pounds with average arm strength on deep passes, there's reason for concern that the speed and physicality at the next level will prevent him from reaching his ceiling. As for his fit in Carolina, the Panthers are jumpstarting a rebuild with Young at the forefront. With DJ Moore gone, Young won't have the type of loaded receiving corps he became accustomed to in Tuscaloosa. Andy Dalton was signed this offseason and will likely fill a mentor role while Young gets ready to take over as the starter as early as Week 1. Young's redraft value is murky as of now given the team context and the questions about his transition to the NFL, but he's certainly on the radar as an early pick in dynasty and is likely a QB2 to target in superflex formats.
