  • Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Loses in first start in two weeks

Varlamov made 33 saves in a 2-0 loss to Buffalo on Saturday. Varlamov allowed just one goal by Kyle Okposo, who was gifted the puck in tight when a shot from the right point deflected off Anders Lee and onto his stick. The netminder had no time to react and Okposo put it in off the near post. It was Varlamov's first start in two weeks -- it's hard to get ice time behind Ilya Sorokin, one of the NHL's best at his craft.

  • Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Playing time could be sparse

Varlamov has played in only two of the last nine games and isn't expected to start anytime soon, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. The Islanders are battling with about a half dozen teams in the Eastern Conference for one of the two wild-card berths. Coach Lane Lambert has admitted that he will likely continue to rely on Ilya Sorokin between the pipes, as they don't play back-to-back games until March 14-15. Varlamov could also draw trade interest before the March 3 trade deadline. General manager Lou Lamoriello will need to decide if he should keep a top backup goaltender who isn't going to start maybe more than 2-3 more games this season or trade him for some much-needed offensive firepower.

  • Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Gives up two in loss

Varlamov made 36 saves in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Senators. Varlamov did what he could to keep his team in this one, but the Islanders couldn't dig out of a 2-0 hole and fell to 1-7-3 over their last 11 games. Both Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin generally give the Islanders a chance to win, but unless the anemic offense in front of them picks things up, it will be hard for the team to work its way back into playoff contention.
