Edmundson (hand) had surgery Tuesday to stabilize a fractured hand and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.
Edmundson sustained the injury during an intrasquad scrimmage over the weekend. The 30-year-old was acquired from the Canadiens over the summer to provide a physical element to the Capitals' defense corps but will be forced to wait to make his debut. Edmundson is scheduled to meet with Washington's medical staff Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury. The 30-year-old blueliner was injured in Sunday's scrimmage. The Canadiens traded Edmundson to the Capitals on Saturday, per Darren Dreger of TSN.
The 30-year-old Edmundson recorded two goals and 13 points while racking up 112 hits and 149 blocked shots in 61 games with Montreal last season. Primarily a defensive-minded blueliner, Edmundson should step into a top-four role in Washington.

Edmundson tallied a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Penguins.
Edmundson extended Montreal's lead to 4-2 with just 11 seconds left in the first period, beating Tristan Jarry with a slapshot from the point. He'd add an assist on Anthony Richard's game-winning tally in the third. It's the first multi-point contest of the year for Edmundson, as he's up to nine points (two goals, seven assists) through 47 outings this season. While he won't contribute much offensively, Edmundson has provided some physicality to the Canadiens' blueline with 84 hits and 124 blocked shots.

Edmundson recorded an assist, two hits and two blocked shots in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Golden Knights.
The helper was Edmundson's first point in three games since he returned from an upper-body injury. It snapped a nine-game drought that predated the injury.
