  • Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Signs one-year deal

Martin inked a one-year, $775,000 contract extension with Carolina on Saturday, according to Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site. Martin has come a long way since being claimed off waivers from Columbus on Jan. 19. The netminder is 4-0-1 with the Hurricanes, and he has given up only 10 goals on 129 shots (.922 save percentage). Martin is extra protection, as the injury-prone Frederik Andersen has one year remaining after this season on his contract, while Pyotr Kochetkov is expected to at least share the starting crease in Carolina next season.

  • Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Revenge win in Columbus

Martin made 20 saves in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Blue Jackets. Waived by Columbus in January, Martin got some revenge against the club he spent the first few months of the season with. The 28-year-old netminder has yet to take a regulation loss as a Hurricane, going 4-0-1 with a 1.97 GAA and .922 save percentage, but with Frederik Andersen (illness) nearing his return, Martin could be exposed to waivers once again or flipped to another club at the trade deadline.

  • Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Slated to start Thursday

Martin is set to start on the road versus Columbus on Thursday, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports. Martin has saved 73 of 79 shots (.924 save percentage) to post a 2-0-1 record over his past three starts. While that's a strong stretch, he's 6-8-2 with a rough 3.21 GAA and .895 save percentage across 17 contests overall. The Blue Jackets, who are tied for 22nd offensively with 2.91 goals per game, should be a favorable matchup for the hot goaltender.

  • Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Tending twine Sunday

Martin will guard the road net Sunday against Buffalo, per Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site. Martin will get the second half of Carolina's back-to-back after Pyotr Kochetkov played in Saturday's 2-1 loss to Dallas. The 28-year-old Martin has stopped 69 of 75 shots en route to winning his previous three starts with the Hurricanes. Buffalo is tied for 21st in the league this campaign with 2.91 goals per contest.

  • Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Sloppy in win

Martin stopped 14 of 17 shots in Monday's 6-3 win over the Blackhawks. Martin didn't have the best of outings, but the Hurricanes' offense had four goals on the board before the Blackhawks scored. Two of the three goals against Martin came on Chicago power plays. The 28-year-old has won all three of his starts as a Hurricane, stopping 69 of 75 shots in those games. He's at 6-8-1 with a 3.31 GAA and an .892 save percentage over 16 appearances between the Hurricanes and the Blue Jackets this season. Pyotr Kochetkov, who was battling an illness but was well enough to serve as the backup Monday, will likely get the nod in goal Thursday versus the Panthers.

  • Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Between pipes Monday

Martin will tend the twine at home versus the Blackhawks on Monday, Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer reports. Martin will be making consecutive starts for the for the first time since mid-November. The 28-year-old netminder is coming off a solid 29-save win over the Golden Knights on Saturday. Martin is already seeing minimal usage in the crease and will likely see even fewer opportunities once Frederik Andersen (illness) is cleared to return.

  • Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Keeps Vegas in check

Martin stopped 29 of 30 shots in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Golden Knights. Martin showed little rust, allowing just a Jonathan Marchessault tally midway through the first period. The 28-year-old Martin has won both of his appearances as a Hurricane, stopping 55 of 58 shots against the Bruins and the Golden Knights. The goalie is up to 5-8-1 with a 3.34 GAA and an .895 save percentage through 15 appearances between the Hurricanes and the Blue Jackets. Playing behind a stout Carolina defense seems to be helping him, but he'll likely remain in the backup role behind Pyotr Kochetkov until one of Frederik Andersen (blood clotting issue) or Antti Raanta (lower body) can return.

  • Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Starting in Vegas

Martin will protect the road goal versus the Golden Knights on Saturday, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports. Martin will get the second half of the back-to-back after Pyotr Kochetkov picked up a 5-1 win over the Coyotes on Friday. Martin won his last appearance, a 3-2 victory over the Bruins, in his Hurricanes debut. He hasn't seen much playing time as the Hurricanes' backup goalie since being claimed off waivers from the Blue Jackets, and he'll face a tough opponent in his first action in over three weeks.

  • Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Picks up win

Martin stopped 26 of 28 shots in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Bruins. What a start for Martin in his Hurricanes debut. He stood tall against the mighty Bruins, keeping them at bay for two periods with 15 straight saves until Brad Marchand scored back-to-back goals in the final frame to make it 2-2. Jordan Martinook eventually scored the game-winner to seal the win for Carolina. Martin finished with a .929 save percentage and kicked out all four power-play shots he faced from Boston. After being claimed on waivers from Columbus, Martin is doing his best to stick with Carolina as the backup to Antti Raanta.

  • Hurricanes' Spencer Martin: Claimed by Carolina

The Hurricanes claimed Martin off waivers from Columbus on Friday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports. The Hurricanes need goaltender help, as Frederik Andersen has been out of action since Nov. 2, a span of 32 games, with a blood clotting issue while Pyotr Kochetkov is currently in concussion protocol. Antti Raanta is currently the No. 1 goaltender, with Yaniv Perets as his backup. Look for Martin, who was 3-8-1 with a 3.65 GAA and an .887 save percentage with lowly Columbus, to back up Raanta until one of Kochetkov or Andersen is ready to return to action. In the meantime, expect the Hurricanes to send Perets to the minors.

  • Blue Jackets' Spencer Martin: Hits waivers

Martin was placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to AHL Cleveland on Thursday. The Blue Jackets will go with Daniil Tarasov as their No. 1 option in goal while the disgruntled Elvis Merzlikins should see the occasional start as the team's backup. Merzlikins has requested a trade, so Martin could find himself with the big club on a permanent basis after the deadline.

  • Blue Jackets' Spencer Martin: Guarding goal against Bruins

Martin will protect the home goal Tuesday versus Boston, per Jeff Svoboda of the Blue Jackets' official site. • Blue Jackets' Spencer Martin: Gets win in relief Friday

Martin stopped 16 of 19 shots after replacing Elvis Merzlikins (illness) to begin the second period of Friday's 6-5 overtime win over the Maple Leafs. Two of Toronto's three goals against Martin came on power plays, and the 28-year-old netminder held the Leafs off the board completely in the third period to help force OT. Martin hadn't been in the crease at all since Dec. 7 due to the return of Daniil Tarasov and hadn't picked up a win since Nov. 27, but Columbus has been reluctant to expose him to waivers and risk losing the goaltending depth. On the season, Martin has a 3-7-1 record with a 3.62 GAA and .889 save percentage.

  • Blue Jackets' Spencer Martin: In goal Thursday

Martin will get the starting nod on the road against the Islanders on Thursday, Brian Hedger of The Columbus Dispatch reports. Martin has managed just one win in his last seven contests, posting a 1-5-1 record, 3.26 GAA and .898 save percentage over that stretch. With the Blue Jackets heading into a back-to-back and Elvis Merzlikins (illness) unavailable, Jet Greaves figures to play versus the Blues on Friday. Once Merzlikins is back, Martin figures to resume his duties as the No. 2 option for Columbus.

  • Blue Jackets' Spencer Martin: Stunned by natty hatty

Martin allowed three goals on 28 shots in Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Bruins. Martin put together a strong effort through two periods, but Brad Marchand bested him three times in 5:50 early in the third to flip the game around. The 28-year-old Martin has been just fine as a backup for the Blue Jackets this season, but with Daniil Tarasov (knee) inching closer to a return, the team will have to make a decision in the crease soon. Martin is 2-6-1 with a 3.20 GAA and a .902 save percentage behind a weak team, so he could benefit if he switches organizations via trade or waivers in the near future. If he's still with Columbus by the end of the week, he'll likely make his next start either Thursday against the Islanders or Friday versus the Blues.

  • Blue Jackets' Spencer Martin: Facing Red Wings

This will be the third straight start for Martin, who is 1-3-1 this season with a 2.90 GAA and .918 save percentage. Martin will face the Red Wings, who are 4-4-2 at home and have scored 50 goals in 14 games this season.

  • Blue Jackets' Spencer Martin: Falls to Dallas

Martin allowed four goals on 30 shots in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Stars. After the Blue Jackets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Martin surrendered four straight goals before the Stars added an empty-netter in a 5-2 defeat. Martin had been playing well coming into Thursday's contest, posting a .953 save percentage over his prior three starts, but he obviously stumbled against Dallas. Overall, the 28-year-old netminder is 1-3-1 with a .918 save percentage and 2.90 GAA while backing up Elvis Merzlikins in Columbus. Martin's fantasy value is minimal at best in all but the deepest of fantasy formats.

  • Blue Jackets' Spencer Martin: Makes 34 saves in loss

Martin saved 34 of 36 shots in a 5-4 overtime loss to Florida on Monday. Martin didn't get the start, but he entered the contest after Elvis Merzlikins surrendered three goals on 11 shots by 6:09 of the first period. Martin went on to put forth a solid performance, but he couldn't quite seal the deal and was ultimately charged with the loss. He's 1-2-1 with a 2.62 GAA and a .928 save percentage in five outings this year. Martin's strong work in relief Monday might be rewarded with the start at home versus Dallas on Thursday.
