Mayfield signed a seven-year contract with the Islanders on Saturday. The Islanders didn't release the financial terms of Mayfield's deal, but it's worth $24.5 million, according to Pierre LeBrun of TSN. The defenseman is coming off a five-year, $7.25 million contract. He had six goals, 24 points, 83 PIM, 107 hits and 168 blocks in 82 contests with the Islanders while averaging 21:02 TOI last season. The 30-year-old should continue to serve in a top-four capacity.... See More ... See Less

Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Two points in Game 3 win
Mayfield picked up a goal and an assist Friday in a 5-1 win over the Hurricanes during Game 3 of the Islanders' first-round series. Both points came in the third period as the Isles broke open a 1-1 tie and set a record for the fastest four goals in playoff history. Mayfield isn't known for his offensive prowess -- he was held off the scoresheet in the first two games of the postseason, and he hadn't posted a multi-point performance since Nov. 12 -- but his physical presence in his own end could be key to the Isles getting back into the series, as he's racked up 10 hits and six blocked shots heading into Game 4 on Sunday.... Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Will play Friday
Mayfield (upper body) is good to play in Game 3 against Carolina on Friday, according to Tom Gulitti of NHL.com. Mayfield was considered questionable after being high-sticked during Wednesday's contest. In the end, he won't miss a game because of the incident. Mayfield, who had six goals and 24 points in 82 outings during the regular season, is projected to be paired with Sebastian Aho on Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Needs medical attention after game
Mayfield (upper body) was unavailable to talk to the media after Wednesday's Game 2 versus the Hurricanes, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reports. Mayfield appeared to be high-sticked on the same play that led to the Hurricanes' game-winning goal in overtime. It's likely that the 30-year-old defenseman will be fine, but his status should be confirmed prior to Friday's Game 3 in New York.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Snaps 36-game goal-scoring drought
Mayfield contributed a goal in a 4-0 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday. Mayfield opened the scoring late in the first period and that marker proved to be the game-winner. He's up to six goals and 23 points in 80 contests this season. Mayfield didn't record a goal over his previous 36 outings, though he did register 11 assists in that span.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Picks apple in third straight game
Mayfield posted an assist in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blue Jackets. This was the third straight game with a helper for Mayfield, with the physical defenseman reaching 20 points for the first time in his career. He's also tacked on 99 hits and 148 blocked shots, but that's not nearly as surprising as Mayfield taking such a drastic leap forward offensively. An increase in ice time -- 20:56 on average -- and a greater volume of shots (103) factor into Mayfield's surge.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Breaks slump Saturday
Mayfield notched an assist, two shots on goal and three hits in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Sharks. Mayfield snapped a six-game slump with the helper. The 30-year-old defenseman is up to 18 points through 71 contests -- he's just one point shy of matching his career high from 2018-19. Mayfield has added 99 shots on net, 144 blocked shots, 97 hits, 77 PIM and a plus-4 rating, providing an increase in physical play after trending down in those categories over recent years.... Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Scoreless in five straight
Mayfield hasn't registered a point and has a rating of minus-2 over his last five games. Mayfield has had a solid season for the Isles in what may be his last for the free-agent-to-be. He has five goals, 12 assists and a rating of plus-1 in 69 games. The five goals ties a career high, and if he can accumulate three more points, he'd set a career best there also. As for his free agency, the Islanders will likely be interested in retaining his services. However, they may not have the room under the salary cap to do so and thus may elect to go with another of their younger players to fulfill the role.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Picks up apple
Mayfield picked up his 11th assist of the season in a 4-0 victory over the Jets on Sunday. General manager Lou Lamoriello will have a decision to make regarding Mayfield before the trade deadline Friday. They can keep him, increasing their chances of making the playoffs but risk losing the unrestricted free agent for nothing this offseason. The other option would be to trade him and try and bring back much-needed draft picks or possibly even an offensive player who can help them win this season. Lamoriello doesn't give away much, but it would seem unlikely that he will be quiet and let the deadline pass without making any other moves.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Notches an apple
Mayfield snapped a nine-game pointless drought with an assist in a 4-0 victory over the Kraken on Tuesday. Mayfield has five goals, eight assists and a plus-2 rating in 54 games this season. There was some thought that Mayfield, who will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, could be on the move before the March 3 trade deadline, but the addition of Bo Horvat has signaled the Islanders will likely be buyers this season and not sellers. Mayfield could, however, still be on the move if the team's play were to take a nosedive. That seems unlikely, however, and the better question may be what other additions could be in store for the Isles.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Scoreless in five straight
Mayfield failed to register a point and had a minus-1 rating in a 5-2 loss to the Maple Leafs on Monday. Mayfield has five goals, 12 points, and a rating of plus-3 in 49 games this season. Mayfield is also an unrestricted free agent after this season. General manager Lou Lamoriello will have some decisions to make as the March 3 trade deadline approaches. The Islanders have lost nine of their last 10 games. They have not scored a goal in the 3rd period of any of those games. They are currently tied with the Panthers and Sabres for ninth place in the Eastern Conference. If this team continues to crater, Lamoriello will need to make moves to improve the organization for next season. One of those moves could be to trade a UFA like Mayfield.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Assists in consecutive contests
Mayfield registered an assist, three blocked shots and two hits in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Flames. Mayfield went from an 11-game point drought to helpers in back-to-back contests. He's already matched his scoring output from December just four games into January. The 30-year-old defenseman has four tallies, six helpers, 62 shots on net, 83 blocked shots, 53 hits, 42 PIM and a plus-6 rating while logging top-four minutes as a steady defensive presence.... Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Breaks scoreless streak
Mayfield notched an assist in a 4-2 loss to the Oilers on Thursday. That assist broke an 11-game scoreless streak for Mayfield, who now has four goals and nine points in 40 games this season. Anything the team can get from Mayfield offensively is a bonus, as Mayfield is one of their better defensemen. Mayfield may not light up the scoreboard, but his rating of minus-7 shows that he's pretty good at making sure the opposing team doesn't, either.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Goalless streak at 16 games
Mayfield hasn't scored and only has two assists in his last 16 games. Mayfield is not known for his offensive abilities. He is a defensive defender whose best offensive season came in the 2018-19 season when he had 19 points. Mayfield is actually on pace to set a career-high in goals as he already has four, just one behind the five he had in 2019-20, but he only has four helpers. The Islanders likely want Mayfield to take care of his own end, and any offensive contributions will be considered a bonus.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Ends drought Sunday
Mayfield picked up an assist in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Blackhawks. Mayfield ended a nine-game point drought with the helper. In that span, he made an impact in different ways, collecting 32 PIM, 14 blocked shots, eight hits and a plus-2 rating. The 30-year-old defenseman is more of a defensive presence for the Islanders, and he's at four goals, three helpers, 35 shots on net, 42 blocked shots, 28 hits, 34 PIM and a plus-6 rating through 26 appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Scoreless in nine straight
Mayfield has failed to register a goal or assist in his last nine games. Mayfield is far from an offensive defenseman, as his best offensive season came when he registered 19 points in 79 games during the 2018-19 season. Mayfield may not be an offensive force, but he is playing well in his zone, as he has a rating of plus-2 in those nine games and plus-5 on the season.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Free agency looms
Mayfield is set to become a free agent after this season, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. This season will be the last of the five-year, $7.25 million contract that Mayfield signed under former GM Garth Snow. Mayfield is a solid third-pair defender who is probably due a raise in free agency. He would likely command between $3-4 million per season on the open market, which might be more than the Islanders are willing to pay a soon-to-be 31-year-old defender.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Goal and assist help pace win
Mayfield scored a goal and added an assist in Saturday's 4-3 overtime win over Columbus. Mayfield tied the game and forced overtime with a backhand shot from the slot at 12:51 of the third period. The points were his first in seven games. Mayfield's 16.7 shooting percentage is inflated well above his 4.7 career mark, so expect his goal scoring to slow down. As it stands, he's surprised the team and fantasy managers with six points, including four goals, in 16 games. This too shall slow.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Nets game-tying marker
Mayfield scored a key goal during a 5-4 victory over the Avalanche on Saturday. Mayfield capped the Islanders' three-goal comeback by redirecting a cross-ice pass from Mathew Barzal to tie the game at three at 10:39 of the third period. The 30-year-old defenseman benefited from the Avalanche skaters tiring from an extended shift. Nine games into the season, Mayfield's already within two goals of his career-best five, which he scored over 67 games in 2019-20.... See More ... See Less -
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Notches first apple
Mayfield had his first assist of the season as the Islanders defeated the Hurricanes 6-2 on Friday. Mayfield is far from an offensive presence, as he has never reached the 20-point threshold in a season, so any offense he provides is a bonus. Mayfield has already potted two goals and could be on his way to eclipsing the career high of four he had in 2018-19. Mayfield's main asset is his play in the defensive zone, and once again, he is doing well there, as indicated by his plus-3 rating.... See More ... See Less
