There was a chance that Soshnikov would play versus the Red Wings on Saturday as Cal Clutterbuck was questionable to play with an undisclosed injury. However, Clutterbuck proved during the pregame skate that he was ready to play. Soshnikov and Ross Johnston are the extra forwards for the Isles. They both would need an injury to get into the lineup. Which of the two would play likely depends on whether coach Lane Lambert wants Johnston's physical presence or Soshnikov's skill in the lineup.

Soshnikov is the 13th or 14th forward for the Islanders, depending upon the situation. Ross Johnston is also a spare forward. The Islanders seem to play Johnston when they feel his physicality is needed, which would mean that Soshnikov would be the forward called upon when needed in all other situations. That being said, Soshnikov would likely need an injury to one of the skilled players ahead of him to see any significant playing time.

Soshnikov wasn't claimed despite a measly $800,000 cap hit and a solid physical game. The 25-year-old needs consistent ice time to continue his development, as he has played just five games while being a healthy scratch five times since missing the first 13 contests due to a concussion. Expect Soshnikov to be on the top of the list in case the Blues need to recall depth forwards.
