Islanders' Oliver Wahlstrom: Not likely to return this season
It's looking more and more like Wahlstrom (lower body) won't return this season, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
The Islanders haven't announced the exact nature of the injury, but it's likely to be related to his knee or ankle. Wahlstrom is expected to make a full recovery, but that recovery doesn't seem like it will get him back into game action this season. The offensively challenged Islanders have missed Wahlstrom's shoot-first mindset.

Islanders' Oliver Wahlstrom: Status for rest of season uncertain
Wahlstrom (leg) is in a cast and on crutches, leaving his status for the remainder of the season in doubt, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
Wahlstrom has been out for nearly six weeks already, and the fact that he's still in need of mobility aids suggests his return is not on the horizon. He'll likely be out for the rest of February at a minimum, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the Islanders make a splash for a middle-six forward at the trade deadline if Wahlstrom doesn't make much progress before then.

Islanders' Oliver Wahlstrom: Still not ready to play
Wahlstrom (lower body) is still not close to being ready to return to the lineup, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
Wednesday will mark the 14th straight game that Wahlstrom has missed due to the injury. The Islanders have been struggling to score goals, as they only have 17 tallies in their last 10 games. Even if he were healthy and playing, Wahlstrom wouldn't be an immediate cure for what ails the team, but he could certainly help get them on the right path. The Isles haven't announced the exact nature of Wahlstrom's injury or a timetable for his return, but it seems unlikely he'll be ready to return before the All-Star break.

Over the last five games, Wahlstrom has racked up a goal and three assists, making this one of his best stretches of the season. He's been listed on the top line at even strength, but he's exceeded 15 minutes of ice time just twice all season. The winger has seven goals, nine helpers, 63 shots on net, 36 hits, 30 PIM and a plus-6 rating in 30 contests overall.

Wahlstrom hasn't registered a point in his last four games.
Wahlstrom has six goals and six assists in 25 games this season but only two goals in his last. Islanders' Oliver Wahlstrom: Getting chance on top line
Wahlstrom scored a goal while adding three shots and two hits during Friday's 3-2 victory over the host Blue Jackets.
Wahlstrom scored his first goal in five games Friday and appears to be playing with more confidence. With 31 career goals in 147 games, Wahlstrom has yet to live up to the promise of his 2018 No. 11 overall draft selection. In the past two games, however, Wahlstrom has received first-line minutes with leading scorer Mathew Barzal and top rookie prospect Simon Holmstrom. Both linemates earned helpers on Wahlstrom's game-opening marker Friday, generated by a wrist shot from the top of the right face-off circle.

Islanders' Oliver Wahlstrom: Nets power-play goal Monday
Wahlstrom scored a goal in a 4-2 win against Ottawa on Monday.
Wahlstrom's goal was also his first power-play point of the season. He's up to five goals and nine points in 16 contests, which is a bit high compared to his point-per-game pace over the previous two campaigns. He'll probably slow down as the season goes on, given that he's averaging under 12:00 of ice time. Even Monday, he logged just 10:01, including 0:30 on the power play.

Wahlstrom was demoted to the fourth line Tuesday versus the Rangers, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
Coach Lane Lambert has not been pleased with Wahlstrom, especially after the winger failed to register a shot on goal in over 11 minutes of ice time versus the Flames on Monday. Wahlstrom started the game on a line with Casey Cizikas and Matt Martin. That trio, however, is unlikely to last long, as there was only a spot open because Cal Clutterbuck had to miss the game because of an undisclosed injury.

Wahlstrom, who had been held without a point during his past four outings, opened the scoring Friday by converting a first-period, 2-on-1 breakaway with Mathew Barzal. It was the first point for the 22-year-old right winger since executing a two-goal game against the Sharks on Oct. 18. Wahlstrom, who scored 13 goals in 73 games last season, registered two shots against the Hurricanes after failing to record a shot versus the Rangers on Wednesday.

Islanders' Oliver Wahlstrom: Moved to top line
Wahlstrom will get a chance to play on the top line with Mathew Barzal and Josh Bailey, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
Wahlstrom is probably the closest to a power forward that the Islanders have. That being said, this team is desperate for goal scoring. Coach Lane Lambert is hoping that with teams worrying about the skating ability of Barzal, the shooting lanes for Wahlstrom will be open. The team has only scored six goals in its last three games, and Lambert hasn't been shy about mixing and matching his lines.
