  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Mired in another slump

Veleno hasn't recorded a point since Feb. 13. Veleno has 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) this season, which represents a career high, but he's gone 19 straight games without a single goal or helper. The waivers-exempt winger is in a contract year as a pending restricted free agent, though it's tough to see Veleno having much leverage in contract negotiations given his inconsistent ways.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Sets new career high in points

Veleno produced an assist and two PIM in Monday's 6-1 win over the Canucks. The helper was Veleno's first since Jan. 10, and he had just two goals in the 12 games in between. The 23-year-old center set a new career high with 16 points through 51 outings this season. He's added 56 shots on net, 98 hits, 26 blocked shots, 16 PIM and a plus-1 rating while filling a bottom-six role for much of the campaign.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Ends four-game point drought

Veleno scored a goal in Detroit's 5-2 loss to Edmonton on Tuesday. Veleno's marker came at 19:51 of the second period and narrowed Edmonton's lead to 3-2. He has seven goals and 15 points in 48 contests this season. Veleno was held off the scoresheet in his previous four contests.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Scores in Thursday's win

Veleno scored a goal on two shots, added two hits and blocked two shots in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Golden Knights. Veleno had picked up three helpers over 10 games since his last goal. The 23-year-old forward's tally midway through the second period stood as his first career game-winner. He's up to six goals, 14 points -- one off of his career high -- and 43 shots on net through 43 contests overall while primarily working in a bottom-six role.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Nets fifth goal of 2022-23

Veleno contributed a goal in a 5-4 overtime win against Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Veleno has recorded a point in each of his last four games. He's up to five goals and 10 points in 32 games this season. The 22-year-old entered the contest averaging just 12:04 of ice time this season, so while he's hot right now, it will be hard for him to make regular offensive contributions unless his role grows.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Trending in right direction

Veleno provided an assist in Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Lightning. Veleno intercepted a lazy puck-clearing attempt from goalie Brian Elliott and quickly fed Elmer Soderblom for the game-winning goal. It appears that Veleno's confidence is up as he's riding a three-game point streak comprised of a goal and two assists. Veleno, whom the Wings drafted 30th overall in 2018, remains a work in progress, but his offensive upside makes him worth watching during the hot streak.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Makes only shot count

Veleno scored on his only shot Saturday, but the Red Wings suffered a 6-3 loss to the Senators. The Red Wings assigned Veleno to the AHL on Thursday, but he was back at the top level the next day, as the parent club evidently considered that a procedural move. At any rate, Veleno still has a long way to go in terms of justifying his selection as the 30th overall pick by Detroit in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He's added just 13 goals and 10 assists through 100 NHL games split across three seasons.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Promoted to NHL

Veleno was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids on Friday, per CapFriendly. Veleno's demotion Friday appears to have been a paper move. He has six points through 28 games with Detroit this season and will likely suit up Saturday against the Senators.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Reassigned Thursday

Veleno was reassigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Thursday, per CapFriendly. Given the Red Wings' significant injury troubles, this appears to be a paper move. Veleno has six points in 28 games as a regular bottom-six presence this season.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Seeking offensive touch

Veleno delivered four hits during Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the visiting Hurricanes. Veleno has mustered just six points this season, including two assists since Nov. 19. With 22 points during his 98-game career, the 2018 first-round draft pick has yet to provide the type of offense worthy of his prospect status. Veleno, who added two blocks in the loss, has registered a plus-3 rating this season after logging a minus-14 in 66 games as a rookie. With Dylan Larkin suffering an injury Tuesday, Veleno will be expected to step up offensively in the captain's absence.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Generates helper

Veleno produced an assist in Wednesday's 5-4 shootout loss to the Sabres. Veleno helped out on a Jonatan Berggren goal at 1:20 of the first period. The assist snapped Veleno's four-game point drought. He continues to be a semi-regular contributor from a bottom-six role, though likely not at a level to help in fantasy. The 22-year-old has three goals, two assists, 19 shots on net, 51 hits and a plus-3 rating through 21 contests.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Finds twine Thursday

Veleno scored a goal, dished two hits, blocked two shots and added two PIM in Thursday's 7-4 win over the Sharks. Veleno gave the Red Wings a 4-2 lead in the third period. The Sharks soon battled back before Detroit responded in kind to take the win. Two of Veleno's three goals this year have come in the last four games, but he's not doing much on offense from a fourth-line role. The center has four points, 13 shots on net, 39 hits, six PIM and a plus-5 rating in 16 appearances this season.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Nets second tally

Veleno scored a goal and delivered five hits during Thursday's 8-2 defeat to the visiting Rangers. Veleno at least showed some tenacity, which was missing from the Red Wings' collective effort. The 22-year-old center produced a game-high in delivered checks. Along with his grit, Veleno used his speed to tie the game at 1-1, scoring for the first time in nine outings. Trailing the play, Veleno received a pass from rookie Jonatan Berggren, who was making his NHL debut, and scored blocker side from the slot. He added two shots in the loss.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Chips in with helper

Veleno logged an assist and two PIM in Monday's 8-3 loss to the Sabres. Veleno set up a David Perron goal late in the second period. This was Veleno's first assist and second point in eight games this season. The 22-year-old has mainly played in a bottom-six role, logging five shots on net, 20 hits, four PIM and a plus-3 rating. He's not a factor on the power play yet, so he's safe to leave on the waiver wire in redraft formats.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Adds to rout

Veleno scored his first goal of the season in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Ducks. Veleno crashed the net and anticipated a perfectly timed pass from Adam Erne, accounting for the game's only goal in the second period. The Wings are thin at forward due to Tyler Bertuzzi (upper body), Jakub Vrana (personal), and Robby Fabbri (knee) being out of commission, which presumably gives Veleno more job security at the top level, but he's exempt from waivers and at risk of being sent down to AHL Grand Rapids should he endure a prolonged slump.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Finds back of net in win

Veleno emerged with the game-winning goal Friday as the Red Wings defeated the Maple Leafs, 4-2, in the preseason contest. Watching teammate Dominik Kubalik post up in front of opposing netminder Illya Samsonov and blocking his line of sight, Veleno took full advantage with a beautiful wrist shot that brushed twine. The 22-year-old is exempt from waivers, so he can freely shuffle between the Wings and their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids this season. Last season, Veleno tacked on eight goals, seven assists and 123 hits through 66 games with the parent club.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Back on the ice Thursday

Veleno (lower body) participated in Thursday's practice session, Max Bultman of The Athletic reports. After missing the team's scrimmage Sunday, Veleno was back in action in the lead-up to back-to-back preseason contests versus Washington and Chicago on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Veleno will need all the minutes he can muster during training camp if he is going to avoid starting the year in the minors. Still, the 22-year-old center did log 66 NHL contests last season in which he garnered eight goals, seven helpers and 123 hits while averaging 13:13 of ice time.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Sits out scrimmage as a precaution

Veleno didn't take part in Sunday's scrimmage for maintenance purposes, Max Bultman of The Athletic reports. Veleno is apparently dealing with a lower-body issue. He probably could have played Sunday had it been a regular season game.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Heads to minors

Veleno was assigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Saturday. Veleno will join Grand Rapids for the team's upcoming playoff run. The 30th overall pick from the 2018 Draft should be a staple in the Red Wings' lineup in 2022-23.

  • Red Wings' Joe Veleno: Tallies to close season

Veleno scored in Friday's season finale, a 5-3 win over the Devils. This was Veleno's first point since March 22. The rookie had gone 18 straight games without a goal or an assist, and he was minus-8 over that span. Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill tested Veleno at various spots on the lineup, including a top-line role near the finish line, but Veleno was unable to build a meaningful offensive streak, finishing the year with eight goals and seven assists through 66 games. It may be too early to write him off, but the 30th overall pick from 2018 is getting long in the tooth as far as prospects are concerned.
