Islanders' Simon Holmstrom: Two helpers in OT loss
Holmstrom logged a pair of assists in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Sharks,
Holmstrom set up Julien Gauthier's opening goal in the first period before adding a second assist on Mike Reilly's shorthanded tally in the third. The two assists are the first of the season for Holmstrom, who now has points in three straight games -- he's totaled two goals and two assists in that span after tallying five goals through his first 20 contests. While he's been limited to a bottom-six role, Holmstrom is one of the Islanders' more intriguing young options, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him work his way into a more prominent spot in the lineup.

Holmstrom scored a shorthanded goal in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Bruins.
The 22-year-old banged home a pass from Jean-Gabriel Pageau on the counter-attack early in the third period to tie the game at 2-2, but the Isles experienced another late collapse after that. Holmstrom has only four goals and zero assists in 11 games this season, but three of the tallies -- including two shorties -- have come in the first four games of November. The 2019 first-round pick showed a bit of an offensive spark at AHL Bridgeport a couple years ago, scoring 12 goals and 43 points over 68 games in 2021-22 as a 20-year-old, but as yet Holmstrom hasn't gotten many opportunities to make an impact in the NHL.

Islanders' Simon Holmstrom: One assist this season
Holmstrom only has three goals, one assist, and a rating of minus-1 in 28 games this season.
While it may be unfair to expect Holmstrom to be lighting up the scoreboard in his rookie season, it's safe to say more than one apple was expected from one of the team's top offensive rookies. Holmstrom rarely plays on one of the top two lines, which contributes to his lack of offensive success, but how can coach Lane Lambert justify moving him up to a scoring line when he isn't producing? It's the old chicken or the egg conundrum. Do you wait for him to produce before moving him up, or hope by moving him up, he will produce? The team isn't likely to have the patience to wait for him to figure it out offensively.
