Barca and Juve's new reality

Now we look at arguably the two biggest names in the Europa League draw and how they have contrived to fall out of Champions League contention so early...

Barca: Despite Robert Lewandowski's five goals in the group stage, Xavi's men dropped into Europe's second tier after finishing behind Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in Group C. Barca also experienced this when they dropped out of last year's edition and reached the UEL quarterfinals before losing to ultimate winners Eintracht Frankfurt who remained in this year's UCL knockout phase.

Juve: The Italians have been in rather poor health across all competitions so far this season and can consider themselves fortunate to even reach this point after finishing well behind Paris Saint-Germain and SL Benfica in Group H. Entering at this stage and despite their form issues, nobody wants to get Juve and the Serie A giants are rightly considered favorites along with Barca.

Route recap

The draw event in Nyon will almost certainly recap this before the balls start to roll, but we will quickly remind you how some of the biggest names made it to this point...

Napoli: The Serie A leaders topped Group A ahead of Liverpool and AFC Ajax and they have also been one of Europe's most in-form sides so far this season.

Bayern: The German giants made light of Group C to finish with maximum points ahead of Inter Milan and Barcelona.

Chelsea: Graham Potter's men have started to wobble of late in the Premier League but were convincing enough to lead Group E ahead of AC Milan and Red Bull Salzburg despite a poor start away at Dinamo Zagreb which cost Thomas Tuchel his job.

Real: So far so good for the defending titleholders who sit pretty in La Liga and edged RB Leipzig to top Group F ahead of the Germans and Shakhtar Donetsk.

City: Pep Guardiola's men continue to trail Arsenal in the Premier League title race and were a little clunky towards the end of Group G with consecutive 0-0 draws before beating Sevilla to ensure that they finished ahead of Borussia Dortmund and the Spaniards.

Liverpool: One of the two runners-up along with Paris Saint-Germain that none of the group winners will want to draw, Jurgen Klopp's beaten finalists from last year showed against Napoli that they can turn it on against the best. It was not enough to pip the Italians to top spot, though.

PSG: Along with Liverpool, Christophe Galtier's unbeaten side are the team no group winner wants to land on straight after winning their group, but a freak second place finish to SL Benfica on an obscure away goals scored tiebreak rule meant second place in Group H for Les Parisiens.

Main draws

A reminder of all of the teams involved in today's main draws. Do not forget, clubs from the same country or who met in the group stage cannot draw each other in the Champions League Round of 16.

UCL group winners: Napoli, Porto, Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Benfica.

UCL group runners-up: Liverpool, Club Brugge, Inter Milan, Eintracht Frankfurt, AC Milan, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and PSG.

As for the Europa League draw, the same goes for clubs from the same domestic league, but group winners have automatically advanced into the Round of 16 draw. Teams dropping down from the Champions League are unseeded against seeded Europa League group runners-up which means that the seeded sides will play the second leg at home. The same rules apply up until the Europa quarterfinals onwards when seeding disappears and clubs from the same countries can meet.

UEL group runners-up: PSV Eindhoven, Rennes, Roma, Union Berlin, Manchester United, Midtjylland, Nantes and Monaco.

UCL third-placed teams: Ajax, Bayer Leverkusen, Barcelona, Sporting CP, Red Bull Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Sevilla and Juventus.
