2022 WWE Clash at the Castle results, recap, grades: Roman Reigns bests Drew McIntyre, Tyson Fury stops Theory

McIntyre came within inches of winning the undisputed title in a match that saw involvement from Tyson Fury

WWE's return to the United Kingdom for their first stadium show in the country in more than 30 years delivered the goods. From start to finish, Clash at the Castle brought it in the ring, including one of the best matches of the year.

The main event saw Roman Reigns managing to successfully defend the undisputed WWE universal championship against a very game Drew McIntyre in a match that saw everything from a debuting member of Reigns' "Bloodline" to Tyson Fury punching Austin Theory to prevent Theory from cashing in the Money in the Bank contract.

While Reigns vs. McIntyre was a very good match, the best match of the night -- and one of the best matches of the year -- came earlier in the night as Gunther successfully defended the intercontinental championship in a thrilling war with Sheamus.

2022 Clash at the Castle match results, grades

Madcap Moss & The Street Profits vs. Austin Theory & Alpha Academy (Kickoff Show): A lot of building to Moss getting a hot tag that saw him hit a fallaway slam on Otis, which was as impressive as it sounds. Montez Fort hit a blockbuster over the top rope to the outside as Chad Gable was held on Angelo Dawkins' shoulders. That set Gable up to be thrown back into the ring to eat a Ford frog splash for the finish. This was just a standard kickoff bout to warm up the crowd but the big spots were effective at doing so. Madcap Moss & The Street Profits def. Austin Theory & Alpha Academy via pinfall -- Grade: B

Bianca Belair, Asuka & Alexa Bliss vs. Damage Control (Bayley, IYO SKY & Dakota Kai): After the crowd sang to Bayley, all six women began to brawl until the faces were able to hit a triple suplex. Things quickly settled into the standard WWE six-person tag pace, with frequent tags and every woman having brief bursts of offense. Damage Control continually worked to try and isolate one of their opponents in the corner, which they were eventually able to do to Bliss. Asuka eventually received the hot tag and was able to swing momentum back to her team's side before tagging in Belair to work over Bayley. Belair nearly had the match won as she hoisted Kai up for a KOD, but SKY was able to grab Kai's foot before Bayley grabbed Belair's braid to allow Kai to deliver a knee. Bayley then hit a Rose Plant and SKY hit a moonsault to allow Bayley to score the pin. A very fun match that allowed everyone to shine at various points and with the perfect finish as Bayley pinning Belair sets up a title program. Damage Control def Bianca Belair, Asuka & Alexa Bliss via pinfall -- Grade: A-

Intercontinental Championship -- Gunther (c) vs. Sheamus: Giovanni Vinci reunited with Gunther and Ludwig Kaiser to reform Imperium before the match. Vinci and Kaiser brawled with Butch and Ridge Holland before the match began as Sheamus and Kaiser stood inches apart, staring each other down. As expected, the two immediately went to war, brutalizing each other with big strikes. Gunther dominated much of the early action, turning Sheamus' chest various shades of red and purple with chops and forearms. Sheamus defiantly stood up after some more heavy chops and caught Gunther's arm and made a comeback, repeatedly sending Gunther scrambling as Sheamus continued to build momentum. After more brutal trading of strikes, Sheamus nearly won the match after hitting White Noise. Sheamus scored another near fall with a Celtic Cross. Still, Gunther was able to pull it out with a brutal lariat. This was a perfect match for what these two men do. An old-school bout featuring true physicality. Gunther def. Sheamus via pinfall to retain the title -- Grade: A+

SmackDown Women's Championship -- Liv Morgan (c) vs. Shayna Baszler: Baszler immediately targeted Morgan's arm, trying to lock in an early armbar. Baszler continued to attack the arm, even after Morgan had brief moments of hope. Baszler used German suplexes and kicks to keep Morgan on the defensive. Morgan eventually fired up, hitting a series of strikes and driving her knees into Baszler's face for a two-count. Baszler tried to stomp on Morgan's arm, but Morgan locked in a triangle and then an armbar to nearly score the submission. Baszler stomped her way out before a knee to the jaw nearly scored her the victory. Morgan drove Baszler's head into the turnbuckle before hitting a running powerbomb, but Baszler quickly locked up a Kirifuda Clutch and an armbar. Morgan was able to reach the ropes to break the hold and shortly after hit Oblivion to score the win. That was the kind of scrappy win Morgan needs to get, a much better bit of booking than her match with Ronda Rousey at SummerSlam. Liv Morgan def. Shayna Baszler via pinfall to retain the title. Grade: B+

Edge & Rey Mysterio vs. The Judgement Day (Finn Balor & Damian Priest): Edge made his entrance wearing a lucha mask. After Balor and Mysterio started the match, Priest tagged in and called for Edge to do the same. Edge quickly bounced Priest from the ring and helped Mysterio flip onto Judgement Day on the outside. After the hot start, Mysterio made the mistake of getting trapped in Judgement Day's corner as the team isolated him away from Edge. Rey was eventually able to make the hot tag and Edge cleaned house, including hitting Balor with a 619 before Mysterio hit a splash for a two-count when Priest broke up the pin. Dominik Mysterio caused a distraction to help prevent Balor from hitting Edge with a Coup de Grace before Rhea Ripley attacked Dominik. Dominik again caused a distraction, allowing Rey to hit a 619 on Balor, sending Balor into a spear from Edge for the win. After the match, Rey and Edge celebrated as Dominik looked on annoyed before kicking Edge in the crotch. As Rey tried to calm Dominik down, Dominik hit his father with a lariat and left the ring alone as Judgement Day looked on and laughed. The turn was a long time coming, but WWE needed to pull the trigger eventually. The match itself was fine, and was helped by a crowd that had been hot all night. Edge & Rey Mysterio def. The Judgement Day via pinfall -- Grade: B

Seth Rollins vs. Matt Riddle: After a brief bit of early work in the ring, Rollins drove Riddle into the ringside barricade with a powerbomb before hitting a suicide dive to send Riddle crashing into the commentary table. Rollins rode his early momentum to score a few near falls with big moves like a falcon arrow. Rollins hit a superplex and rolled through looking to continue the momentum, but Riddle was able to reverse into a fisherman buster and a knee to the jaw. As Rollins rolled out of the ring, he was hit with a kick to the face before Riddle hit a Floating Bro to the outside. Riddle jumped into a triangle choke and nearly had Rollins out, but Rollins escaped and hit Riddle with Riddle's own finisher, Bro Derek, for a near fall. After several striking exchanges and reversals, Rollins hit a pedigree for a two-count. Rollins ranted about Riddle's family leaving him again, causing Riddle to explode but the loss of control allowed Rollins to again take over before hitting Riddle with a Randy Orton-style hanging DDT. Rollins then tried to hit an RKO, but Riddle blocked the move and began to brutally attack Rollins with strikes before trying to hit Rollins with a chair. Rollins slid into the ring to escape and then hit a stomp as Riddle tried to follow him. Rollins then finished off the match with a stomp off the second rope for the win. A good, hard-hitting match with a good story of Rollins simply being smart enough to take advantage of Riddle's reckless aggression. Seth Rollins def. Matt Riddle via pinfall -- Grade: B+

Undisputed WWE Universal Championship -- Roman Reigns (c) vs. Drew McIntyre: Reigns and McIntyre stared each other down after the bell rang and Reigns got increasingly frustrated with the fans loudly singing in support of McIntyre. McIntyre was able to overwhelm Reigns multiple times early, causing Reigns to go to the outside of the ring and gather himself. McIntyre continued to take the fight to Reigns, clotheslining him over the top rope before throwing him into the barricade, ring apron and ring steps on the outside. Karrion Kross caused a distraction from the crowd, throwing a water bottle before Reigns took over the action at that point. Reigns began taunting McIntyre after putting him down on the canvas.

Reigns continued dropping McIntyre with right hands, a tactic he returned to several times whenever McIntyre would try to make a comeback. Reigns then demanded a microphone and demanded to be acknowledged before turning around into a Glasgow Kiss headbutt from McIntyre. McIntyre began to throw Reigns around the ring with belly-to-belly suplexes. McIntyre scored a near fall with a spinebuster. As McIntyre tried to hit the Claymore, Reigns countered with a Superman punch. Reigns nearly won the match after a spear, but McIntyre was able to kick out to keep the match alive. Looking for a way to keep McIntyre down, Reigns locked in a guillotine choke but McIntyre smashed him into the turnbuckle to break the hold, only for Reigns to immediately lock it in again. McIntyre broke the hold again and speared Reigns through the ringside barricade only to get hit with another Reigns spear back inside the ring.

Reigns argued with the referee, saying that it should have been a three-count, the distraction allowing McIntyre to hit a Claymore that also knocked the referee from the ring. Austin Theory ran in to try and cash in the Money in the Bank contract but was knocked out by Tyson Fury. McIntyre hit another Claymore and again Reigns kicked out. The two then brawled, both hitting big moves before McIntyre hit a spear and a Claymore, seemingly having the match won when the referee was dragged from the ring by Solo Sikoa, the younger brother of The Usos, setting Reigns up for a spear to retain the title. A very good match that could have used a bit better pacing early on and a fine way to keep the belts on Reigns while keeping McIntyre strong. After the match, Tyson Fury shook Roman Reigns' hand. Fury then helped McIntyre to his feet and raised his hand before getting on the mic to tell McIntyre he did the country proud before singing "American Pie." Roman Reigns def.
