  • Guardians' Kyle Manzardo: Not in Wednesday's lineup

Manzardo is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Tigers.

Following his promotion from Triple-A Columbus on Monday, Manzardo started both of the first two games of the series versus Detroit, going 0-for-7 with five strikeouts. He'll begin Wednesday's contest on the bench, with Jose Ramirez getting a day out of the field and serving as Cleveland's DH.

  • Guardians' Kyle Manzardo: Called up, hitting seventh Monday

The Guardians selected Manzardo's contract from Triple-A Columbus on Monday. He'll serve as the Guardians' designated hitter and hit seventh in Monday's series opener versus the Tigers.

With Steven Kwan (hamstring) landing on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move, Manzardo should get the chance to play on an everyday basis in his first taste of the big leagues. If he performs well enough, Manzardo should have a strong case for sticking around with Cleveland even after Kwan returns, as the 23-year-old is viewed as one of the organization's top hitting prospects and isn't in need of further development time in the minors. In his first full season with the Cleveland organization after coming over from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline last July, Manzardo slashed .303/.375/.642 with nine home runs, 20 RBI and 25 runs across 128 plate appearances for Columbus. Though he'll be deployed at DH on Monday, Manzardo picked up 24 starts at first base with Columbus and could be an option at the position when Josh Naylor needs a day off.

  • Guardians' Kyle Manzardo: Earning first call-up

The Guardians are expected to call up Manzardo from Triple-A Columbus on Monday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

The 23-year-old missed out on Cleveland's Opening Day roster but is set to receive his first taste of the big leagues as Steven Kwan (hamstring) is headed to the injured list. Manzardo has clubbed nine homers with a 1.017 OPS through 29 games for Columbus and seems likely to see regular playing time while Kwan is unavailable.

  • Guardians' Kyle Manzardo: Misses out on Opening Day roster

The Guardians reassigned Manzardo to minor-league camp Monday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

Manzardo is one of the Guardians' top prospects and was given the chance to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster, but despite slashing .381/.458/.476 over his 13 Cactus League appearances, the Cleveland brass determined that he could use some more development time in the minors. After coming over from the Rays last summer in a deadline deal that sent right-hander Aaron Civale to Tampa Bay, the 23-year-old got on base at a .348 clip at Triple-A Columbus and slugged six home runs in 92 plate appearances, showing the blend of power and on-base skills that could make him a mainstay at first base for the big club for years to come. However, against lefties, Manzardo slashed just .161/.269/.330 between his Triple-A stops with Columbus and Durham, so mastering same-handed pitching may be the final box that he needs to check before getting his first taste of the big leagues.

  • Guardians' Kyle Manzardo: Could be ticketed for Triple-A

Manzardo seems likely to begin the season with Triple-A Columbus, Jason Lloyd of The Athletic reports.

Josh Naylor is slated to be the Guardians' primary first baseman, but Manzardo seemingly could receive plenty of starts between designated hitter and first base. However, it would appear Cleveland is leaning toward sending the 23-year-old back to Columbus initially. Manzardo is coming off a relatively disappointing season in the minors, although he finished strongly at Columbus (.938 OPS) after arriving via trade from the Rays and carried that over into the Arizona Fall League (.905 OPS). Guardians officials have reiterated how difficult it is to hit in Cleveland in April and how that can hurt the confidence of a young hitter. Perhaps that's factoring into the front office's thinking regarding where Manzardo will begin the season.
