• Athletics' Zack Gelof: Placed on injured list

  The Athletics placed Gelof on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a strained left oblique. Gelof's injury caused him to be a late scratch from Oakland's lineup ahead of Wednesday's game, and it will now officially cost him at least another week and a half. The 24-year-old second baseman hadn't missed a start prior to Wednesday, though he's failed to make the most of his playing time, slashing just .196/.260/.337 with seven RBI across his first 101 plate appearances. Darell Hernaiz was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move.

• Athletics' Zack Gelof: Likely headed for IL

  Gelof was diagnosed with a left oblique strain Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Gelof's injury was initially described as "left abdominal soreness" and caused him to be scratched from Oakland's lineup prior to Wednesday's game. However, his injury now appears to be more severe than initially thought, and it will likely cause him to land on the injured list. The A's haven't specified how long the 24-year-old may be out for, but Abraham Toro, who filled in for Gelof on Wednesday, will likely see consistent reps at second base in his absence.

Gelof's eighth-inning solo shot didn't have much of an impact on the final score, but it extended his on-base streak to six games and marked his second homer over his past three contests. The second baseman is 6-for-14 with five RBI over that three-game span, as he appears to be turning things around following a slow start to the campaign. Prior to the the offensive spurt, Gelof began the season batting .156 with no homers or RBI and a 5:13 BB:K across his first 32 at-bats.

It was an impressive display of patience from the 24-year-old second baseman, who managed an 8.7 percent walk rate as a rookie in 2023 but routinely posted marks in double digits in the minors. Gelof has struggled so far this season when he's had to swing the bat, however, going 5-for-32 (.156) with 13 strikeouts to balance out his five free passes, while chipping in two doubles, two steals and five runs.

• Athletics' Zack Gelof: Possible waiver wire pickups

  I wrote extensively about Gelof in the last edition of Waiver Wire, so I want to be careful not to belabor the point here. But he went 4 for 5 with two doubles and a stolen base Wednesday and remains one of the most viewed players in CBS Sports leagues. It's clear he's hot to begin his major-league career, and there are reasons to believe it's not all fake. For starters, he's fast enough to keep running at the rate he has. Moreover, his line-drive, fly-ball and pull rates are all high, which is the way to maximize lower-quality contact. But he doesn't have a lot of raw power and strikes out too much considering. It's possible you've missed his best work already, but there's no denying he demands to be picked up now. And hey, Matt McLain has made a similar profile work.

  Gelof's arrival for the start of the second half was overshadowed by Tyler Soderstrom's, but it's no contest which has been more valuable in Fantasy Baseball so far. With two more home runs Sunday, Gelof is up to eight to go along with six stolen bases in just 105 plate appearances. His Triple-A output was stellar as well, albeit in a hitter's haven in Las Vegas. He's no longer in such a venue nor getting much help from his supporting cast, but he's done well to carry himself so far. There are reasons for concern, such as a bad strikeout rate and even worse zone contact rate, and his high-end exit velocities are rather uninspiring. With high fly-ball, line-drive and pull rates, though, it may just be that he angles the ball in a way that's optimized for damage. He's hot right now, if nothing else, but don't assume it'll last forever.
