Player Outlook
DeGrom's first season with the Rangers after inking a five-year, $185 million contract ended after just six starts when he required Tommy John surgery in mid-June. Unsurprisingly, he was brilliant when on the mound, boasting an absurd 45:4 K:BB over 30.1 innings while averaging 98.7 mph with his fastball. The hope is that the two-time Cy Young winner can rejoin the Rangers' rotation at some point after the All-Star break, but given that it was his second UCL repair and the fact that he has made just 44 starts over the last four seasons, the rehab could take a little longer than your normal Tommy John surgery. He's been indisputably the best pitcher in the game when healthy, but unless you have unlimited IL spots it's difficult to advocate taking Jacob deGrom in a redraft in 2024.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Extends throwing to 90 feet

DeGrom (elbow) has extended his flat-ground throwing to 90 feet, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. It's the next step in deGrom's throwing progression as he continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery. Everything seems to have gone as expected to this point with deGrom, who hopes to rejoin the Rangers' rotation at some point late in the season.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Moves to 60-day IL

The Rangers placed deGrom (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Friday. It's a procedural transaction for deGrom as he continues his rehab from last June's Tommy John surgery. The 35-year-old began a throwing program in mid-February but still has a long road ahead as he builds his arm strength back up.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Kicks off throwing program

DeGrom (elbow) said that he began a throwing program Monday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. DeGrom rested Tuesday before he resumed throwing Wednesday, and he may continue to limit himself to a few throwing sessions per week as he begins a slow ramp-up process from last June's Tommy John surgery. The Rangers are hoping for deGrom and co-ace Max Scherzer (back) to make midsummer returns from their respective surgeries, though no firm target date will likely be in place for either pitcher until they advance to the point in their rehab that they're facing hitters. The 35-year-old deGrom hasn't pitched more than 100 innings in any season since 2019 and will fall short of that threshold once again in 2024 while he's likely out for at least the first half of the campaign.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Will resume throwing in spring

DeGrom (elbow) said Saturday that he plans to begin throwing again in the spring, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom didn't specify the exact date he'll start his program, but he added that he's happy with the progress he's made in his recovery. The 35-year-old righty underwent Tommy John surgery in July to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow and is projected to rejoin the Rangers late in the summer.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Has full range of motion

DeGrom (elbow) has full range of motion back in his pitching arm, he told Joel Sherman of the New York Post on Tuesday. The goal for deGrom -- who is a little over four months removed from Tommy John surgery -- is to begin a throwing program early on in the new year and progress to mound work sometime during spring training. "My arm feels pretty close to normal already," he said. DeGrom is aiming to rejoin the Rangers' rotation by next August.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Surgery goes as expected

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that the Tommy John surgery that deGrom (elbow) underwent Monday went well, the Associated Press reports. Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister performed the reconstructive procedure on deGrom's UCL, marking the second time the soon-to-be 35-year-old has had Tommy John surgery after he first required the elbow operation in October 2010. Though no new ligament damage or inflammation was seemingly detected during Monday's surgery, deGrom will still face the typical 12-to-14-month recovery timeline and could struggle to return to elite form, given his advanced age along with the sketchy track record of pitchers who have had two Tommy John procedures. DeGrom likely won't be cleared to start a throwing program before the end of 2023 and probably shouldn't be expected to be ready to rejoin the Texas rotation until midsummer 2024 in a best-case scenario. He'll be heading into the second season of a five-year, $185 million deal in 2024.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Requires Tommy John surgery

DeGrom will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom landed on the injured list April 29 and was shifted to the 60-day IL on Monday. The 34-year-old ace had been throwing bullpen sessions regularly and didn't appear to suffer any setbacks, but the procedure will shut him down for the season and keep him out the majority of 2024 as well. The Rangers signed deGrom to a five-year, $185 million contract in the offseason, and he will conclude 2023 with a 2.67 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and a dominant 45:4 K:BB through 30.1 innings.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Shifted to 60-day IL

DeGrom (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Monday. DeGrom has been throwing off a mound for a couple weeks now as he works his way back from right elbow inflammation. While it does not seem as though he's had a setback, he now won't be eligible for activation until June 28. Moving deGrom to the 60-day IL frees up a spot for Spencer Howard, who is making his return from the IL.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Another bullpen session coming

DeGrom (elbow) will throw another bullpen session Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. The Rangers will reportedly re-evaluate deGrom's situation once the team returns from its current road trip. At that point, a decision could be made regarding a potential rehab assignment and/or a tentative return date. The 34-year-old ace has been on the injured list since April 29 with right elbow inflammation.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Uses all pitches in session

DeGrom (elbow) threw a 31-pitch bullpen session Friday, Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom threw his fourth bullpen session in the last week-and-a-half and took a significant step this time out. The right-hander used his entire arsenal of pitches, something he hadn't done in the previous three sessions. The Rangers haven't made a decision about a rehab assignment for deGrom, who hasn't thrown more than 32 pitches in his four bullpens.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throws bullpen session

DeGrom (elbow) threw a 32-pitch bullpen session Monday. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said the session went "really well" and added deGrom is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Friday, at which time he'll incorporate breaking balls. The Rangers have not yet decided if the right-hander will need a rehab assignment.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Another bullpen on tap

DeGrom (elbow) will throw a third bullpen session Monday, Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom, who threw a couple light bullpen sessions last week, will throw a third Monday and could "possibly" throw to live hitters by the end of the week. The pitcher said it felt like he had turned a corner after Friday's session.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Back on mound

DeGrom (elbow) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. This marked the second time this week deGrom threw a session. After Friday's exercise, he rested before going to the outfield to play catch. It was all positive news for deGrom, who said he feels like he's "turned a corner" in his recovery from what was diagnosed as elbow inflammation. "Everything felt good," deGrom said. "We are heading in the right direction." The Rangers haven't discussed a rehab assignment yet, and it should be noted the right-hander didn't take a significant amount of time away from throwing after being placed on the shelf in late April.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throws light bullpen

DeGrom (elbow) threw a "light" bullpen Tuesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom is still a few weeks away from a return from the elbow inflammation that placed him on the 15-day injured list at the end of April. The right-hander will likely advanced to more traditional bullpens in the coming days and then could begin a rehab assignment if he continues to make positive progress. At this point, it looks likely deGrom is back in the Texas rotation right around the start of June.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Could miss another three weeks

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy told reporters before Tuesday's game against Seattle that deGrom (elbow) could be another 2-to-3 weeks away from returning, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Bochy noted that deGrom has been going very easy with testing out his throwing while only playing light catch at this stage in his program. The right-hander has no timetable for when he'll be able to return to the mound for bullpen sessions, and that step will have to take place before a more serious ETA for deGrom's return to the Texas pitching staff. At this point, it seems very unlikely the 34-year-old will back back in the month of May, with the start of June seemingly a more realistic timeline at this juncture.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: No timetable for mound work

DeGrom (elbow) remains limited to playing light catch and there is no timetable for when he will be cleared to throw off a mound, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. "We're going very easy with it and testing it out," Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. While deGrom is eligible to return from the injured list Sunday, it's clear that it's going to take longer than that, perhaps much longer. Understandably, the Rangers want to proceed very cautiously with the prized right-hander as he works his way back from right elbow inflammation. Dane Dunning got the first start in deGrom's place and could be set for multiple turns through the rotation.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: To play catch soon

DeGrom (elbow) is slated to begin playing catch during the Rangers' May 5-14 road trip, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. When exactly he'll play catch during the road trip isn't clear, but it's good news that it's coming soon. DeGrom landed on the injured list last weekend with right elbow inflammation and is eligible for activation in mid-May. Whether he'll be ready to go at that time remains to be seen.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Goes on IL with elbow inflammation

Texas placed deGrom on the 15-day injured list Saturday with right elbow inflammation. The Rangers are recalling Yerry Rodriguez from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding transaction. This comes after deGrom left Friday's start against the Yankees after dealing with tightness in his right forearm, and unsurprisingly the result is another stint on the injured list for the right-hander. The good news is there doesn't appear to be structural damage for deGrom, so he could be back in the rotation in the middle of May if everything goes well.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Fans 11 in win

DeGrom (2-0) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and zero walks over six innings against the Athletics. He struck out 11. DeGrom dispelled any worries fantasy managers had about the wrist injury that forced him out of his last start after four innings, striking out 11 batters while giving up just one run over six innings Sunday. After sporting a 4.32 ERA in his first three starts, DeGrom has recovered nicely with just one earned run combined in his last two appearances. He has recorded a 14.5 K/9 on the season.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throws side session Friday

DeGrom (wrist) threw a bullpen session Friday, but the Rangers have yet to confirm that he'll be able to start Sunday versus the Athletics, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that he'll have a better idea about deGrom's availability Saturday. DeGrom was removed from a start earlier this week with right wrist soreness after tossing four no-hit innings.
