Shipley has yet to report to an affiliate, as he's likely building up at the Mariners' facility in Arizona after he had remained unsigned throughout spring training. Once he's deemed ready for game action, Shipley could settle at Double-A Arkansas, where he spent his entire first season in the Seattle organization and pitched to a 3.79 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 54.2 innings. The 31-year-old right-hander has previously seen action in the majors in parts of three seasons, though he hasn't made an appearance at baseball's top level since 2018.

Shipley has made all five of his appearances with Triple-A Reno out of the bullpen since being activated from the 10-day disabled list and optioned to the minors May 18.
Per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, the success Matt Koch and Clay Buchholz have enjoyed at the back end of the rotation in recent weeks coupled with the impending returns of Shelby Miller (elbow) and Robbie Ray (oblique) from the DL convinced the Diamondbacks they had sufficient organizational starting pitching depth. With that in mind, Shipley has been transitioned to a relief role, which Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen believes will increase the right-hander's chances of making an impact with the big club later this season. Before he gets another call to the majors, however, Shipley will probably have to deliver far better results out of the bullpen. In those five relief outings with Reno, Shipley has given up eight runs (seven earned) on 16 hits and five walks over eight frames.

Shipley was one of four Triple-A Reno pitchers that Diamondbacks assistant general manager Jared Porter mentioned as potential replacements in the rotation for Taijuan Walker (forearm), who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic Arizona reports.
Walker will undergo an MRI on Monday as the Diamondbacks look to determine the severity of his forearm tightness in addition to a potential return timetable, but the right-hander's placement on the DL means that he'll miss at least one turn through the rotation Friday or Saturday against San Diego. In addition to Shipley, Porter said that Matt Koch, Albert Suarez and Kris Medlen -- all of whom are members of the Reno rotation -- could fill Walker's place, though the latter two seem to be less likely candidates due to their lack of 40-man roster spots. Shipley has been an early standout for Reno (1.59 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 17.1 innings), but it would be difficult to roster him with much confidence even in NL-only formats if he gets the call to the Arizona rotation over Koch, Suarez and Medlen. The 26-year-old owns a 5.40 ERA (5.89 FIP), 1.62 WHIP and 5.7 K/9 across 95 career innings in the majors.

Two of the hits Shipley allowed went for extra bases and included a home run by Milwaukee catcher Manny Pina. Considering that the right-hander yielded 23 home runs across 130 innings between Triple-A Reno and the Diamondbacks a season ago, he'll likely need to show improvement in curbing the long balls in his subsequent spring outings to have a serious case for claiming an Opening Day bullpen role with the big club.
