Hunter Renfroe: Dropped by Cincy
The Reds released Renfroe on Thursday.
After slashing just .128/.227/.205 across 44 plate appearances with Cincinnati, Renfroe was DFA'd by the team Monday and will now enter the open market. He wouldn't be eligible for the postseason if he were to sign elsewhere, so it's possible Renfroe remains without a team through the end of the year.

Reds' Hunter Renfroe: Moved off 40-man roster
The Reds designated Renfroe for assignment Monday.
Renfroe went just 5-for-39 at the plate after being claimed off waivers from the Angels in August and was deemed expendable with Stuart Fairchild (illness) returning from the COVID-19-related injured list. Though he reached the 20-homer plateau again in 2023, Renfroe has put up a modest .713 OPS in 140 games after exceeding an .800 OPS in both of the previous two seasons. The 31-year-old will be a free agent this offseason.

Reds' Hunter Renfroe: Sitting out Thursday
Renfroe is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Tigers.
It's the fourth straight game that we've seen Refroe on the bench against a left-hander, although a minor hamstring injury could have played a part in that. Jake Fraley is in the designated hitter spot and Nick Martini is in right field.

Reds' Hunter Renfroe: Hits first homer with Reds
Renfroe went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's loss against the Cardinals.
Renfroe tallied his first Reds home run with a 378-foot shot off Drew Rom in the third inning. Starts have been sporadic for the 31-year-old in the crowded Cincinnati outfield -- since he was acquired from the Angels on Sept. 1, Renfroe has started just four of eight games, in part due to a mild hamstring issue.

Renfroe will serve as the Reds' designated hitter and bat third versus the Cardinals and left-hander Drew Rom after being limited to pinch-hitting duties in Cincinnati's previous series against the Mariners. The 31-year-old has gone 2-for-13 with two singles in five games since being claimed off waivers from the Angels on Aug. 31.

Renfroe (hamstring) remains out of the starting lineup Wednesday against the Mariners.
Renfroe drew a walk as a pinch hitter in the Reds' win over the Mariners on Tuesday, but he's not quite a full-go due to lingering left hamstring tightness. Nick Martini, TJ Friedl and Will Benson will start across the outfield Wednesday as Jake Fraley fills the DH role.

Reds' Hunter Renfroe: Heads to Cincinnati on waiver claim
Cincinnati claimed Renfroe off waivers from the Angels on Thursday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
Renfroe went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and four total RBI in his final game with the Angels on Wednesday in Philadelphia. The 31-year-old brings an established power stroke to the Reds' lineup, whether at DH or in the corner outfield, as they aim to reach the playoffs for just the second time in the last 10 years. Their other postseason appearance in that span was during the COVID-affected 2020 campaign. Also adding Harrison Bader on a waiver claim from the Yankees, the Reds are suddenly much more dangerous against left-handed pitching opponents.

Angels' Hunter Renfroe: Placed on waivers
The Angels waived Renfroe on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
After slashing .239/.300/.425 across 496 plate appearances with the Angels this season, Renfroe -- alongside four other players -- will be let go by the team in an effort to dump a bit of salary. The 31-year-old outfielder signed a $11.9 million deal with the Halos in the offseason, but the team that claims Renfroe will be on the hook for only roughly $2 million of his salary. Renfroe's new team will mark his sixth in the past five seasons.

Angels' Hunter Renfroe: Resting Monday
Renfroe is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
Renfroe has not sat much since the All-Star break, but he has not hit much in recent weeks either -- he owns a .481 OPS over his last 16 games -- so he will get a day to clear his head. Trey Cabbage will start in right field in Renfroe's place.

Renfroe didn't start Game 1, though he logged one plate appearance and struck out as a pinch hitter. Renfroe's long ball was his first over 18 games in August, and he's batting a paltry .197 (12-for-61) with just five RBI and a 2:19 BB:K this month.
