  • Matt Dermody: Released by Boston

The Red Sox released Dermody on Friday, Sean McAdam of The Springfield Republican reports. Less than a week after being sent outright to Triple-A Worcester, Dermody will now look to latch on with a new organization. The 32-year-old lefty has been struggling of late, allowing three runs across four innings in his lone MLB start June 8 and 11 runs over 14 innings in his last three minor-league appearances. Dermody was having a decent season in Worcester before slumping, so it's very possible another organization signs him to a minor-league deal.

  • Red Sox's Matt Dermody: Clears waivers

The Red Sox outrighted Dermody to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. In an effort to afford the other members of the rotation an additional day of rest, the Red Sox summoned Dermody from Worcester to make a spot start in Thursday's series finale in Cleveland. The journeyman southpaw proceeded to throw four innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits and one walk in a losing effort, then was booted off the 40-man roster a day later when the Red Sox reinstated outfielder Adam Duvall from the injured list. As expected, Dermody passed through waivers unclaimed, so he'll stick around in the organization and will presumably settle back into a rotation spot for Worcester.

  • Red Sox's Matt Dermody: DFA'd after taking loss

Dermody (0-1) took the loss Thursday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk over four innings in a 10-3 loss against Cleveland. He struck out one and was designated for assignment after the game, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. Dermody was brought up from Triple-A Worcester to make his first big-league appearance of the year, and it didn't go very smoothly. He was pulled early after allowing two home runs to Jose Ramirez and won't stick around with the big club. Dermody has a 4.50 ERA across 44 innings for Worcester this year and is likely to return to the affiliate, assuming he goes unclaimed on waivers.

  • Red Sox's Matt Dermody: Loses roster spot

Dermody was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Thursday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. Dermody drew a spot start Thursday against the Guardians and took the loss after allowing three earned runs across four innings. The move to promote the 32-year-old Dermody generated negative reaction and heavy criticism for the Red Sox, as it was learned he posted (and later deleted) a homophobic tweet in 2021, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. He's made 30 big-league appearances since 2016, so it's possible that he sees another chance in the majors this season, either with the Red Sox or another organization.

  • Red Sox's Matt Dermody: Added to roster ahead of start

The Red Sox selected Dermody's contract from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Dermody will make his first major-league start Thursday versus the Guardians after posting a 4.50 ERA and 47:9 K:BB over 44 innings with Worcester. He holds a career 5.60 ERA across 27.1 relief innings in the big leagues.

  • Red Sox's Matt Dermody: Confirmed for start Thursday

Dermody will be promoted from Triple-A Worcester ahead of his start Thursday against the Guardians, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Dermody holds a 5.60 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through 27.1 innings in his major-league career, and Thursday will mark his first MLB start. The 32-year-old lefty hasn't been anything special in the minors this season (4.50 ERA, 1.34 WHIP through 44 innings), but his 47:9 K:BB is rather impressive.

  • Red Sox's Matt Dermody: Sent to minors camp

The Red Sox reassigned Dermody to minor-league camp Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The 32-year-old left-hander had previously seen big-league action in parts of four seasons from 2016 through 2022, logging a 5.60 ERA over 30 career relief appearances. He'll likely open the season at Triple-A Worcester and provide Boston's top minor-league affiliate with experienced depth out of the bullpen.

  • Red Sox's Matt Dermody: Gets NRI deal from Red Sox

Dermody agreed Tuesday with the Red Sox on a minor-league deal which includes an invitation to spring training, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Dermody has made 30 MLB appearances over his career with the Blue Jays and Cubs. The left-hander spent the end of 2022 with the NC Dinos of the Korea Baseball Organization and registered a 4.54 ERA over 39.2 innings spanning eight starts with the club. He faces long odds on making the Red Sox roster out of the Grapefruit League.

  • Matt Dermody: Moving to Korea

Dermody confirmed Monday that he will be granted his release from the Cubs to sign with the NC Dinos of the Korea Baseball Organization, Tommy Birch of The Des Moines Register reports. Dermody was recently promoted to the majors and made a relief appearance during last Thursday's doubleheader with the Cardinals before being optioned back to Triple-A Iowa a day later. He had been serving as a member of Iowa's rotation for much of the season, compiling a 3.74 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 79.1 innings. As a 32-year-old who wasn't likely to get many opportunities down the stretch for a rebuilding team, the Cubs were presumably comfortable with letting Dermody make the jump overseas. His move to Korea creates an opening on the 40-man roster.

  • Cubs' Matt Dermody: Reaches deal with Cubs

Dermody signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Feb. 8. Following a one-year stop in Japan with the Saitama Seibu Lions, Dermody will return to North America ahead of his age-31 season. The southpaw has previously appeared in the majors in the 2016, 2017 and 2020 seasons with the Blue Jays and Cubs, compiling a 5.13 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 29 career relief appearances. He'll likely open the 2022 campaign with Triple-A Iowa.

  • Cubs' Matt Dermody: Clears waivers

Dermody was outrighted to the Cubs' alternate training site Thursday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. He passed through waivers and will remain in the organization after getting designated for assignment earlier this week.

  • Cubs' Matt Dermody: Bounced from 40-man roster

The Cubs designated Dermody for assignment Monday, Maddie Lee of NBC Sports Chicago reports. Chicago selected Dermody's contract ahead of Sunday's game, and he ended up making his first big-league appearance since 2017 in the 7-3 loss, tossing a scoreless inning in relief. The Cubs apparently didn't view Dermody as part of their long-term plans, so he'll lose his spot on the 40-man roster a day later with Chicago scooping speedy outfielder Billy Hamilton up off waivers from the Mets.

  • Cubs' Matt Dermody: Signs with Cubs

Dermody signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Saturday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Dermody spent last season in the Toronto organization at Triple-A Buffalo, where he posted a 5.48 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 23 innings across 15 appearances. The southpaw will serve as organizational pitching depth for the Cubs during the 2020 campaign and should report to the team's alternate training site.

  • Blue Jays' Matt Dermody: Outrighted to Triple-A

Dermody was outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Dermody will stick with in Blue Jays' organization after passing through waivers untouched. The 27-year-old, who split time between Triple-A and the big club last season, will serve as organizational bullpen depth in 2018.

  • Blue Jays' Matt Dermody: Designated for assignment

Dermody was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Wednesday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports. The Blue Jays needed to open up a spot on their 40-man roster following the acquisition of Sam Gaviglio, and Dermody was the odd man out. The 27-year-old has struggled so far in camp, allowing six runs on 11 hits across six frames. He'll take a spin through waivers to determine his landing spot for 2018, though he doesn't figure to serve as anything more than a mop-up man or lefty specialist wherever he lands.

  • Blue Jays' Matt Dermody: Back in big leagues

Dermody was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports. Dermody has been a solid relief arm for the Bisons this season, amassing a 3.29 ERA and a 37:9 K:BB in 41 innings of work. With Danny Barnes (shoulder) landing on the disabled list Tuesday, Dermody will replace him on the active roster to fill the void in the bullpen, although it's unlikely that the latter will fill as integral of a role moving forward given his one disastrous performance earlier in the season.

  • Blue Jays' Matt Dermody: Cruising since return to Triple-A

Dermody has allowed just one run over 10 appearances and 11.1 innings since returning to Triple-A Buffalo. Dermody's one MLB appearance this season didn't go well -- he allowed five runs on four hits, including three homers while recording just one out April 16 against Baltimore. Despite proving to be an effective minor-league reliever since 2013, the righty has failed to make a positive impression in his limited major-league service over the past two years. Dermody will likely get another crack with the Jays once a hole opens in the team's bullpen.

  • Blue Jays' Matt Dermody: Optioned to Triple-A

Dermody was optioned back to Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reports. This is the corresponding move for when Aaron Sanchez (finger) gets activated from the DL prior to Sunday's start. Dermody will continue to serve as organizational bullpen depth at the Triple-A level.

  • Blue Jays' Matt Dermody: Recalled from Triple-A

Dermody was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports. Dermody received his first taste of the big leagues as a September call-up last season, giving up four runs over three innings while striking out five batters. With Aaron Sanchez (finger) hitting the 10-day disabled list Sunday, Dermody will give the Blue Jays a healthy arm out of the bullpen, but it's not known if he's being considered as a candidate to replace Sanchez in the rotation. If the Jays elect to keep Dermody in the bullpen, look for the team to recall one of its starters from Triple-A to fill in for Sanchez when Toronto first needs another starter April 22 against the Angels.

  • Blue Jays' Matt Dermody: Optioned to Triple-A

Dermody was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday. Dermody made a strong push for a spot on the 25-man roster this spring. He didn't allow a run or issue a walk through his first six appearances while tallying four strikeouts. However, his good fortune came to a screeching halt Sunday when the Pirates rocked Dermody for three runs on three hits and a free pass in a single inning. Less than 24 hours later, Dermody learned he'd be opening 2017 with the Bisons. The left-hander will likely return to the big-league team when the need for a southpaw reliever arrives later in the year.
