Stewart allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two over a scoreless inning to earn a hold in Thursday's 6-3 victory over the White Sox. The right-hander has thrown 11.1 scoreless innings to begin the season with a 15:6 K:BB ratio. He hasn't finished any games or had any save chances with Jhoan Duran (oblique) sidelined, as Stewart has been used primarily in the eighth inning. However, he's amassed six holds.... See More ... Twins' Brock Stewart: Earns first hold
Stewart threw a scoreless eighth inning to earn his first hold of the season in Thursday's Opening Day win at Kansas City. It was Griffin Jax who got the first save chance of the season and converted with a scoreless ninth inning. It looks like Jax will be the primary option to close games while Jhoan Duran is sidelined several weeks with an oblique injury. However, the Twins could mix and match the two in save situations.... Twins' Brock Stewart: Could get closing chances early on
Stewart and Griffin Jax are viewed as the most likely candidates to handle save situations for the Twins in the first few weeks of the season after president of baseball operations Derek Falvey announced Monday that Jhoan Duran (oblique) will begin the campaign on the injured list, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Falvey didn't comment specifically on the Twins' plans at closer sans Duran, but Stewart and Jax represent the team's top-performing bullpen arms from 2023 that were retained heading into 2024. Though he spent considerable time on the shelf while tending to a sore elbow, Stewart was dominant when he was available last season, pitching to an 0.65 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 39:11 K:BB in 27.2 innings. Jax's numbers (3.86 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 68:19 K:BB in 65.1 innings) weren't quite as impressive in comparison, but he has multiple seasons under his belt as a reliable relief arm for Minnesota in addition to possessing a much stronger track record on the health front. That might be enough to give Jax the early edge on save chances over Stewart, who still profiles as a decent late-round dart in mixed leagues and AL-only leagues in any case.... See More ... Twins' Brock Stewart: Back from injured list
Stewart (elbow) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.comreports. The right-hander has been sidelined by elbow tendinitis since late June but is ready to rejoin the Twins for home stretch of the regular season. Stewart posted a 0.70 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 35:11 K:BB across 25.2 innings prior to the injury, but he may need to pitch well in his appearances this week in order to crack Minnesota's playoff roster.... Twins' Brock Stewart: Advances to mound work
Stewart (elbow) threw a 15-pitch bullpen session Friday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. The activity marked Stewart's first time throwing off a mound since he suffered a setback with his injured right elbow in late July. Stewart been on the shelf since late June with what was originally diagnosed as elbow tendinitis. He's aiming to return around Sept. 10.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Brock Stewart: Expands throwing distance
Stewart (elbow) has been throwing off flat ground from 90 feet as of Tuesday, MLB.com reports. Slowly but surely, Stewart is increasing his throwing distance as he works his way back from right elbow soreness. Twins head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta said that Stewart could be cleared to begin throwing bullpen sessions by late August, which would keep hope alive for a September return from the 60-day injured list.... Twins' Brock Stewart: Building back up for side session
Stewart (elbow) played catch from 60-to-75 feet Saturday and is slowly working to a bullpen progression, MLB.com reports. Stewart experienced a setback with his elbow following a bullpen session July 29 and was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. On a more fortunate note, Stewart hasn't been shut down from throwing entirely following his setback, though the Twins plan on bringing him along more slowly this time around. Twins bench coach Jayce Tingler said Friday that Stewart could be activated in four weeks if all goes well during the rehab process, meaning the right-hander likely won't be back with the big club until around early or mid-September.... Twins' Brock Stewart: Completes side session
Stewart (elbow) threw a 15-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Stewart said afterward that his elbow didn't bother him during the workout, so he'll plan to throw another bullpen session Saturday before the Twins determine his next steps. The right-hander remains without a definitive target date for his return from the 15-day injured list, but he appears to progressing well in his recovery.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Brock Stewart: Throwing only long toss
Stewart (elbow) has been playing catch from up to 90 feet without issues and hopes to be back in "several weeks" after building up his throwing progression, MLB.com reports. A report on July 7 said Steward would be ready soon after the All-Star break, but it sounds like he's still weeks away since he's throwing only long toss. Stewart went on the injured list June 27 with right elbow tendinitis.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Brock Stewart: Expected back soon
Stewart (elbow) is expected back soon after the All-Star break, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. Stewart went on the injured list last week with right elbow tendinitis and it sounds like he could have a minimum 15-day absence, or close to it. He's been a revelation out of the Twins' bullpen this season, posting a 0.70 ERA and 35:11 K:BB over 25.2 innings of work.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Brock Stewart: Elbow exam confirms tendinitis
An exam on Stewart's injured right elbow confirmed he has tendinitis, the Associated Press reports. "Everything I think came out just as we thought it would," manager Rocco Baldelli told the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Wednesday. Stewart was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right elbow soreness. While it sounds like he's avoided a worse-case scenario, there's still not a timetable for his return. Still, it sounds like he has a chance to return in mid-July.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Brock Stewart: Earns first save
Stewart picked up the save Saturday against the Blue Jays. He allowed one hit and no walks while striking out one over a scoreless inning. Jhoan Duran threw a scoreless eighth inning and Jorge Lopez couldn't finish the ninth inning (despite a 9-4 lead), so Stewart was called in to finish the game and convert a save chance. Stewart has suddenly become a reliable option in a struggling bullpen as he's thrown 14 scoreless innings with 15 strikeouts, though he has a concerning 11 walks. He could see increasing high-leverage opportunities if he can issue fewer free passes.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Brock Stewart: Officially added to roster
The Twins selected Stewart's contract from Triple-A St. Paul on Tuesday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. Stewart will be heading back to the majors for the first time since 2019 after he missed time and then struggled to return to form following Tommy John surgery. He's experienced a velocity uptick in 2023 with St. Paul and has fanned 17 while walking just two over 8.2 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Brock Stewart: Expected to be promoted
Stewart will be called up from Triple-A St. Paul by the Twins prior to Tuesday's game versus the Yankees, Steve Adams of MLBTradeRumors.com reports. Stewart, 31, hasn't pitched in the majors since 2019, having toiled in independent ball and undergoing Tommy John surgery since that point. He's regained his pre-op stuff and then some, though, striking out 17 of 35 batters faced at St. Paul while sitting in the upper-90s with his fastball, per Adams.... See More ... See Less
