Player Outlook
A bat-first infielder without a natural position, Colt Keith is a career .303 hitter in the minors and established himself as one of the best offensive-minded prospects in the game while splitting time between Double-A and Triple-A. He slashed .306/.380/.552 with 27 home runs and a 21.0 K% in 126 games across the top two levels of the minors but never got the call to the majors in his age-21 season. Generally a pull hitter who has steadily cut his groundball rate (below 35% at Double-A and Triple-A), Keith logged an excellent 34 percent hard-hit rate in the minors and should be able to produce enough at the plate to make up for his shaky defense. He saw 35 starts at second base and 20 starts at third base while at Triple-A, but he played more total games at third base when factoring in his Double-A usage, so he should enter the year eligible at third base with a chance to add second-base eligibility in season. The fact he didn't get the call last season led to some uncertainty about whether he would open 2024 on the big-league roster, but the six-year extension he signed with Detroit in January means he'll likely be in the big leagues Opening Day.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: On bench Wednesday

Keith is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays. Keith will cede the keystone to Buddy Kennedy, marking the rookie's second absence from the lineup in four games. The 22-year-old has opened his big-league career with a .165/.224/.177 slash line through his first 85 plate appearances, and his ongoing struggles could be starting to cost him some playing time.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Not in Sunday's lineup

Keith is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Minnesota, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Keith is mired in a 2-for-25 slump and will take a seat for Sunday's series finale. Buddy Kennedy will step in at second base and bat sixth.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Sitting out Tuesday

Keith is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's contest versus the Rangers. It's the first day off against a right-hander this season for Keith, who had started each of the previous nine games. Zach McKinstry will occupy second base Tuesday.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Tallies two hits in loss

Keith went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Pirates. Keith now has hits in three straight games, and the rookie is batting a respectable .250 overall across his first 10 contests. He's yet to go deep this year after hitting a total of 27 home runs across two levels in 2023, but the power should come as long as he keeps making consistent contact. Keith should stay locked into a regular role as well, so the opportunity is there for the promising 22-year-old to have a strong debut campaign.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Not in Friday's lineup

Keith is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Athletics. Keith went 1-for-12 through the first four games of the season, but his bat came alive during Thursday's doubleheader against the Mets as he went 3-for-8 with a walk, a double, an RBI and two runs. Andy Ibanez will start at the keystone Friday against Oakland lefty JP Sears.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Records first MLB stolen base

Keith went 3-for-8 with a walk, a double, an RBI and two runs scored across both games of Thursday's doubleheader against the Mets. He also stole a base. The double and the stolen base were both firsts for Keith at the MLB level. The 22-year-old isn't really known for his speed, as he never stole more than four bases in a season during his time in the minors. Instead, Keith should display more power when he settles in with the Tigers, as he posted an .890 OPS last season with Triple-A Toledo and a .976 OPS in 2022 with Double-A Erie. He only has a .554 OPS so far this year, but fantasy managers should remain patient because the upside is there.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Takes seat Monday

Keith is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mets. Keith will hit the bench for the first time in his young MLB career after starting each of the Tigers' first three contests in the season-opening sweep of the White Sox. Andy Ibanez will step in at the keystone for Keith, who went 1-for-11 with two walks in Chicago.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Managing illness

Keith is out of the lineup for Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies due to an illness, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Keith hasn't seen the field since Tuesday due to the ailment but expects to rejoin the starting nine Saturday. The 22-year-old is poised to operate as Detroit's primary second baseman this season after inking a six-year, $28.64 million extension in January.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Will be used at second base in 2024

The Tigers plan to play Keith at second base this season, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Keith has played more third base than second base in the minors, but the Tigers believe "he has the chance to be an average or better second baseman," per president of baseball operations Scott Harris, and that's the position the club intends to play him at this year. Harris also added that, following Keith's contract extension, the Tigers "expect him to make a very compelling case in spring training to be our Opening Day starter at second base, but he has to earn it." Barring a disastrous spring, Keith should indeed "earn" it. With Keith at the keystone, Detroit has a bevy of options to play third base, including Matt Vierling, Zach McKinstry, Andy Ibanez, Nick Maton, Andre Lipcius and Ryan Kreidler.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Mastering Double-A

Keith has a hit in 12 of his last 14 games for Double-A Erie and is hitting .474 with four home runs and a 10:9 K:BB over that stretch. Keith broke out last year with a 150 wRC+ at High-A and a 1.004 OPS in the Arizona Fall League, and he has carried that success over this year as a 21-year-old at Double-A. On the year, he is slashing .331/.399/.571 with nine home runs and a 22.7 percent strikeout rate, and the strikeouts have been trending down of late. Keith profiles as a below-average defender at third base, but it's looking like his bat will be good enough for him to get time at designated hitter, if necessary.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Continues to look good

Keith went 2-for-2 with a triple, a solo home run and two runs scored in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. Keith is batting .353 this spring with a robust 1.362 OPS. The 21-year-old is Detroit's top hitting prospect and figures to start the season at either High-A West Michigan or Double-A Erie, though at this rate, he could push his way to the majors sooner rather than later. Keith is worth keeping an eye on, particularly in dynasty formats.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Gets spring invite after strong AFL

Keith (shoulder) appeared in 19 games during the Arizona Fall League, slashing .344/.463/.541 with three home runs and a 16:16 BB:K. Keith missed the final three months of the 2022 minor-league season while recovering from a shoulder injury, but he was at least able to make up for some of the lost development time in the AFL and performed well at the plate while doing so. The Tigers announced Monday that Keith will join the big-league group for spring training as a non-roster invitee, but the 21-year-old infielder is expected to open the 2023 campaign at either High-A West Michigan or Double-A Erie.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: May return this season

The Tigers are hopeful that Keith (shoulder) will be able to return at some point this season, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. He will not need surgery on his injured shoulder, and even if he doesn't make it back during the High-A season, he could potentially be assigned to the Arizona Fall League. Keith slashed .301/.370/.544 with nine home runs in 48 games prior to suffering the injury.

  • Tigers' Colt Keith: Bumped up to High-A

The Tigers promoted Keith from Low-A Lakeland to High-A West Michigan on Monday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Keith, a 2020 fifth-round pick, earned the call-up to High-A after reaching base at a prolific .436 clip over 181 plate appearances with Lakeland. The 20-year-old showed a discerning eye at the plate at Low-A (16.9 percent walk rate) while seeing action at third and second base, but he didn't hit for much power (.102 ISO). Listed at 6-foot-3 and 211 pounds, Keith has the sort of frame that would suggest he still has some untapped upside as a power hitter.
