Greene (1-4) earned the win Friday, tossing six hitless innings during a 9-0 victory over the Cubs. He struck out 11 and walked two. Coming into the contest, Greene allowed seven home runs and 17 runs over his previous four starts, but he was still striking batters out at a high clip (29 through 22 innings). He maintained that elite strikeout rate versus the Cubs while reducing the hard contact, resulting in the best outing of his season and arguably of his short two-year career. The hard-throwing right-hander has all the makings of an ace, but he hasn't proven it consistently yet. The best stretch of his career thus far came at the end of 2022, when he posted a 0.62 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 45:7 K:BB over his final five starts (29 innings), which included a two-hit, eight strikeout performance against the Cubs.... Reds' Hunter Greene: Punches out 10 in loss
Greene (0-4) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over seven innings in a 4-1 loss to the Yankees. He struck out 10. Greene is still winless this season despite punching out 10 batters for the third time in nine outings. He was hurt by the home-run ball Sunday, as the Yankees took the lead on Harrison Bader's two-run shot in the fifth inning before Gleyber Torres added a solo homer in the sixth. Through 50 innings this season, Greene has a mediocre 4.68 ERA and 1.50 WHIP despite a solid 69:20 K:BB.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Tagged with six runs
Greene allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk over four innings in Monday's loss to the Rockies. He struck out eight and did not factor in the decision. Greene, who is still looking for his first win of the season, stumbled early Monday, coughing up four runs in the second inning. He then allowed a two-run homer to Brenton Doyle in the fourth. Fortunately for Greene, the Reds' offense kept pace for most of the game, so he wasn't charged with the loss. His season ERA rose to 4.60 with a 59:17 K:BB through 43 innings. Greene is projected to face the Yankees at home this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Gives up two in loss
Greene (0-3) took the loss Wednesday against the Mets, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings. Greene opened up the game by striking out the side but would only register one more punchout the rest of the way. He was taken yard by Pete Alonso to kick off the second inning and then gave up another run in the fourth after Luis Guillorme doubled and Brandon Nimmo singled him home. The 23-year-old did allow a season-high four walks, and his four strikeouts were his second fewest on the year, but he's given up three runs or fewer in all but one start. Green will carry a 3.69 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 51:16 K:BB over 39 innings into a road matchup at Coors Field against the Rockies next week.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Remains winless
Greene (0-2) took the loss Friday as the Reds fell 5-4 to the White Sox, giving up five runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out seven. Homers by Elvis Andrus and Luis Robert accounted for most of the damage off Greene, with the latter long ball helping to chase the right-hander from the game. The 23-year-old continues to look dominant at times -- he produced 19 swinging strikes among his 102 pitches -- but the strikeouts aren't yet leading to consistent results. Greene will take a 3.74 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 47:12 K:BB through 33.2 innings into his next start, which could come at home next week against the Mets.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Fans 10 in no-decision
Greene did not factor in the decision against Oakland on Saturday. He pitched five innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out 10 batters. The 22-year-old was dinged for two runs in the second inning, though both were unearned since the frame began with a Nick Senzel error. Aside from that, Greene was impressive, recording his second double-digit strikeout effort this season and racking up a whopping 24 swings-and-misses. He was prevented from going deeper into the contest because he needed 112 pitches to get through five frames, costing him a chance at his third quality start in his past four outings. Nonetheless, Greene is looking every bit like one of the best young hurlers in the game this season, registering a 2.89 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 40:11 K:BB across 28 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Solid in loss
Greene (0-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing a run on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Pirates. He struck out six. Greene allowed a run in the bottom of the first before bouncing back with five shutout innings. It was a strong performance from the 23-year-old right-hander, who left his last start after three innings with a right tibia contusion. However, Cincinnati's offense couldn't muster anything offensively, tagging Greene with a hard-luck loss. He lowered his ERA to 3.52 with a 1.39 WHIP and an impressive 30:8 K:BB through his first 23 innings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Confirmed to start Sunday
Greene (tibia) is listed as the Reds' starting pitcher for Sunday's series finale in Pittsburgh, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Greene was diagnosed with a right tibia contusion after his most recent start in Monday's 8-1 win over the Rays ended early when he was struck by a comebacker, but it looks like he'll be ready to go when he returns to the hill Sunday on five days' rest. Since suffering the tibia contusion, Greene inked a six-year, $53 contract extension that includes a $21 million team option for 2029, potentially locking him into the Cincinnati rotation for the rest of the decade.... Reds' Hunter Greene: Agrees to six-year, $53M extension
Greene (lower leg) and the Reds agreed Tuesday to a six-year, $53 million contract extension with a seventh-year club option, Jeff Passan of ESPN reports. The new deal kicks in this season and will buy out what would have been Greene's first two years of free agency. The option for 2029 is worth $21 million and carries a $2 million buyout. Greene, 23, is one of the hardest-throwing starting pitchers in baseball history and boasts 188 strikeouts through his first 142.2 major-league innings. Granted, he's also issued 54 walks in that span and holds a career 4.42 ERA. With a little improvement in his overall command and secondary offerings, the right-hander could emerge as a full-on superstar in Cincinnati.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Hopeful for next start
Greene (tibia contusion) said he hopes to make his next start, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. His right leg tightened up in between innings after he was hit by a comebacker, but X-rays were negative. Greene tossed three scoreless innings with one strikeout against the Rays before his night was cut short. If Greene can stay on turn, he would line up to pitch this weekend in Pittsburgh.... Reds' Hunter Greene: X-rays return negative
Greene left Monday's game against the Rays with a right tibia contusion, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. X-rays returned negative. Greene was hit hard by a comebacker in the second inning against Tampa Bay, and while he was able to continue for one more inning, the bruise left him unable to continue. The hard-throwing right-hander should be considered day-to-day, and it's a positive development that there was no structural damage found during the imaging.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Leaves start with apparent injury
Greene left Monday's start against the Rays with an apparent injury, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. He allowed no runs over three scoreless innings with no walks and one strikeout before exiting. Greene was hit in the shin area by a comebacker, and while he initially was able to stay in the contest, he was forced to exit an inning later. Greene will likely undergo imaging to make sure there's no structural damage, and there should be an update on his status before Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay. Buck Farmer has replaced Greene on the mound.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Fans 10 in no-decision
Greene allowed three runs on seven hits and no walks over six innings in a no-decision against Atlanta on Wednesday. He struck out 10 batters. Greene went toe-to-toe with opposing hurler and fellow rising star Spencer Strider on Wednesday, racking up 10 strikeouts and 21 swinging strikes to Strider's nine and 22. Greene was able to go six frames to pick up his first quality start of the season, but he was kept out of the win column as Atlanta pulled out the victory in the ninth inning. This was the 23-year-old's best start of the campaign thus far, as he pitched past the fifth inning for the first time and notched a season-high strikeout total. This was also the first time in 2023 that Greene didn't issue any free passes -- he walked three batters in each of his first two outings.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Can't get through fifth Friday
Greene did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings in a 5-2 loss to Philadelphia. He struck out five. Greene surrendered the first run of the game in the second inning after walking three consecutive batters but got out of the frame by getting Trea Turner with the bases loaded. After back-to-back shutout frames, the young right-hander got into trouble again in the fifth and gave up a go-ahead RBI double to Kyle Schwarber. Greene retired the next two batters but was replaced by Alex Young. Through two starts, Greene's pitched just eight innings and given up five earned runs, but he has 13 strikeouts.... See More ... Reds' Hunter Greene: Another postponed start
Greene and the Reds won't play Thursday after the Phillies postponed their home opener to Friday because of rain, Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Greene was supposed to make his second start of the season Wednesday versus the Cubs before that game got banged due to inclement weather in Cincinnati. The waiting game rolls on for the 23-year-old right-hander as April storms continue to move across parts of the United States. He'll face off against Zack Wheeler in Friday's makeup game at Citizens Bank Park.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Start vs. Cubs rained out
Wednesday's game between the Cubs and Reds has been postponed because of rain, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The game has been rescheduled for a split doubleheader on Sept. 1. There was an 1:43 delay before deciding to postpone the contest. Hunter Greene and Marcus Stroman were scheduled to pitch Wednesday, but they'll now likely be the starters for their clubs next game.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Only 3.1 innings in opener
Greene did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings against the Pirates. He struck out eight. The right-hander brought the fireworks to Cincinnati on Opening Day, regularly lighting up the radar gun at 100 mph, including one pitch clocked by Statcast at an absurd 105.2 mph. Oneil Cruz turned on one of those fastballs for a long homer, and per John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer, Greene's velocity dipped as he progressed through the outing. With that, manager David Bell decided to lift Greene after only 83 pitches. Greene should be available for a heavier workload next week at home against the Cubs, but it will be an uphill battle for him all season.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Named Opening Day starter
Greene will start Cincinnati's Opening Day game versus the Pirates on March 30, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Greene will lead Cincinnati's trio of promising young starts -- himself, Nick Lodolo and Graham Ashcraft -- into what will likely be another tough season for the Reds. The right-hander threw four scoreless innings in Thursday's spring training action and has a 5.40 ERA through three spring appearances. He figures to start at least a couple more games between now and Opening Day.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Dominates in final start
Greene (5-13) allowed two hits and a walk over six shutout frames Monday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Cubs. Greene fired 65 of 90 pitches for strikes and forced 14 whiffs in the strong outing. The hard-throwing righty finished his 2022 rookie season on an absolute tear; he registered a 1.02 ERA with a 51:7 K:BB over his final six starts dating back to July 26. However, it was a rookie campaign filled with ups and downs, as he recorded a 4.44 ERA through 125.2 total innings.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Hunter Greene: Fans 10 in no-decision
Greene allowed an unearned run on four hits, three walks and two hit batsmen while striking out 10 in six innings in a 4-1 loss Tuesday in Pittsburgh. He did not factor into the decision. Despite allowing nine baserunners, Greene managed to limit the Pirates to one unearned run. In the fifth, he loaded the bases with no outs but got out of the inning unscathed. It was his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season with both coming in his last three starts. Since returning from a shoulder injury Sept. 17, he's posted a 1.06 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 29:6 K:BB in 17 innings. His final start of the season will likely be early next week against the Cubs....
